Twas the night before Christmas Eve, 1990. My mother sounded surprised as she took the call. 'Tomorrow? Yes, we'll be there...' It was a phone call that would change our lives. Back then, Mum was a foster carer, taking in children who had been removed from their families either temporarily or permanently. Day or night, a call could come through from social services. My heroic mum – a single parent – would take in two or three extra kids on top of her own four offspring.
