FDA motions to ban controversial red food dye after causing cancer in animals
The Food and Drug Administration could soon move to ban a controversial red dye used in countless American drinks, snacks, candies and cereals that have been found to cause cancer in animals. The FDA is signaling that Red 3, also known as erythrosine, could be outlawed in foods in a matter of weeks. 'With Red 3, we have a petition in front of us to revoke the authorization board, and we're hopeful that in the next few weeks we'll be acting on that petition,' said Jim Jones, the FDA's deputy commissioner for human foods, in front of the US Senate health committee Thursday.
