“Emily in Paris” Actor and Playwright Jeremy O. Harris Arrested in Japan for Alleged Drug Smuggling

Jeremy O. Harris, theTony Award-nominated playwright andEmily in Parisactor, was arrested in Japan on suspicion of attempting to smuggle drugs into the country, multiple outlets report.

The New York Times,ReutersandThe Guardianreported on Friday, Dec. 5, that Harris, 36, has been in custody in Japan since Nov. 16, when he flew into the Japanese island Okinawa and customs officers allegedly found ecstasy (also known as MDMA) in his bag, citing local customs officials.

Reps for Harris did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's requests for comment.

According toThe Guardian, customs officials in Japan filed a criminal accusation against Harris with a regional prosecutor's office on Thursday, Dec. 4, to begin formally charging Harris with a crime.

The New York Timesreported that Harris could face up to seven years in prison if found guilty. The outlet reported that local police declined to say whether Harris has admitted to the allegations.

The Guardianand Reuters reported that Harris had traveled to Okinawa for sightseeing purposes from the United Kingdom via a layover in Taiwan, citing a Japanese customs spokesperson.

In July, Harris debuted a new play titledSpirit of the Peopleat Massachusetts' Williamstown Theatre Festival, which markedAmber Heard's professional stage acting debut.

That play's cast included Ato Blankson-Wood, Zachary Booth, James Cusati-Moyer, Emma Ramos, Brandon Flynn, Julian Sanchez and Amandla Jahava.
