Prosecutors allege that Lakanwal, who lived in Washington state, drove across the country to D.C., where he opened fire at Wolfe and Beckstrom outside the Farragut West Metro station with a .357-caliber revolver, thePostreported.

Earlier this week, the suspect was formally charged with first-degree murder, assault with intent to kill while armed and two counts of possessing a firearm during a crime of violence, according to the outlet.

Lakanwal pleaded not guilty through a defense attorney at the hearing on Tuesday, Dec. 2, thePostsaid.

Beckstrom and Wolfe were amongmore than 2,000 National Guard troops deployed to D.C. in August, in response to what Trump, 79, described as rampant crime in the nation's capital.

However, his use of the military has been criticized by others as excessive and partisan, given the city's Democratic history.
