Sources: Memphis hiring Southern Miss coach Charles Huff to replace Ryan Silverfield

Charles Huff is heading to his third school in three seasons.

Sources told Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellengerthat Memphis is hiring Huff to replace Ryan Silverfield. Huff was at Southern Miss in 2025 and replaces Ryan Silverfield after he was hired at Arkansas.

Huff came to Southern Miss after one of the oddest situations in the 2024 coaching cycle. He coached the final season of his deal at Marshall a season ago and was free to leave at the end of the season even as Marshall was in the midst of one of the best seasons in school history at the top level of college football. Marshall went 10-3 and beat Louisiana in the Sun Belt title game.

As it became clear in the waning weeks of the season that Huff's future didn't lie at Marshall, he went to fellow Sun Belt school Southern Miss and many players followed. The Thundering Herd opted outof the Independence Bowl because of a lack of players andwas ultimately fined $100,000 by the Sun Belt.

Southern Miss experienced an immediate turnaround under Huff. After going 1-11 in 2024 under coaches Will Hall and Reed Stringer, the Golden Eagles went 7-5 in 2025 and are set for just their second bowl game of the 2020s. Marshall, meanwhile, went 5-7.

Huff has a career record of 39-25 as a head coach. He was 32-20 at Marshall as the Thundering Herd qualified for a bowl game in each of his four seasons with the school. Before taking the head-coaching job at Marshall, Huff was an associate head coach and running backs coach at Alabama and also worked as an assistant at Mississippi State and Penn State.

At Memphis, he takes over a program that is one of the most well-resourced in the American Conference. The Tigers went 8-4 in 2025 after winning 21 games combined over the 2023 and 2024 seasons.
