Tributes come in for 'titan' Vince Zampella, reported dead in SoCal crash

Tributes are pouring in for Vince Zampella, the gaming industry "titan" who died in areported car crash on Angeles Crest Highwayon Sunday, Dec. 21.

Zampella "played a foundational role" in the popular franchises such as Call of Duty, Apex Legends and the Star Wars Jedi series, the Battlefield franchise said in atribute on social mediaon Monday, Dec. 22. Zampella had been tapped to head the franchise in 2021, according to multiple reports that year.

The 55-year-old was a founder of Respawn Entertainment, which has a presence in Los Angeles and wasacquired by EA in 2017. Respawn Entertainment said they're heartbroken by his death in astatementon Monday, Dec. 22.

"Vince was a titan and legend of this industry, a visionary leader and a force who shaped teams and games like Call of Duty, Titanfall, Apex Legends, the Star Wars Jedi series and Battlefield for our community in ways that will be felt for generations," Respawn said. "His impact reached far beyond any one game or studio. We will remember Vince for how he showed up every day, trusting his teams, encouraging bold ideas, and believing in Respawn & Battlefield. Most importantly, he championed what he believed was right for the people behind those studios and our players because it mattered."

'Visionary creator': EA, Jacksepticeye and more react

"This is an unimaginable loss, and our hearts are with Vince's family, his loved ones, and all those touched by his work," EA said in an emailed statement to the USA TODAY Network. "Vince's influence on the video game industry was profound and far-reaching. A friend, colleague, leader and visionary creator, his work helped shape modern interactive entertainment and inspired millions of players and developers around the world. His legacy will continue to shape how games are made and how players connect for generations to come."

Geoff Keighley, the host and producer of The Game Awards, called Zampella "a dear friend" in apost on X,. Keighley described him as a "titan of the video game industry."

Popular gaming YouTuber Seán McLoughlin, known as Jacksepticeye, commented on the news in apost on X.

"This is shocking news! Vince was such a colossal influence on the industry and hearing his name be attached to projects held so much respect. RIP"

'Mortal Kombat' co-creator Ed Boon described Zampella as a "legend in gaming" and a "friend."

"Don't know if its possible to overstate the impact Vince Zampella has made on games," Boonsaid on X.

Actor Simi Lusaid on X, "cannot even process…my deepest condolences man. It's been such a tragic time."
