Highlights from John Harbaugh's introduction as New York Giants coach

TheNew York Giants' John Harbaugh eraofficially kicked off Jan. 20 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, as the franchise introduced its new head coach to the world.

Harbaugh's link to the Giants was first reported Jan. 14, with thepairing becoming officialon Jan. 17.

The formerBaltimore Ravenscoach, who was fired on Jan. 6 after an 18-year run with the organization, began working late Jan. 14 to finalize a deal with the Giants,Art Stapleton of NorthJersey.com and The Record− part of the USA TODAY Network − reported.ESPN's Adam Schefter was first to reportthe news.

Harbaugh's five-year deal with the Giants is expected to come with "a total value that nears $100 [million]", according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

John Harbaugh on working with Joe Schoen and reporting directly to ownership

One of the early points intrigue of John Harbaugh's arrangement with the Giants was the coach reporting directly to ownership rather than holdover general manager Joe Schoen.

Harbaugh downplayed that setup carrying any particular weight for him.

"It's really not that important," Harbaugh said. "In the big picture, in the big scheme of things, I think it's kind of overblown just a bit in terms of how it works. The main thing is that it works and that we work together."

"That's kind of what I was used to. It felt like a good way to start off. ... We all report to the boss, and the boss is ownership."

Harbaugh also lauded Schoen's work and said he expected their partnership to be "phenomenally great."

"You get to know Joe and we started talking ball and what you see is a football man," Harbaugh said. "This guy lives and breathes football."

John Harbaugh responds to President Trump

John Harbaugh has plenty of admirers as he takes over the Giants. One figure who hasn't been shy in his advocacy for the coach: PresidentDonald Trump, who posted several times after Harbaugh's dismissal by the Ravens backing the coach and advocating his hire by the Giants.

Harbaugh joked that co-owner John Mara might have had something to do with President Trump's push.

"It feels really great. … It's the most iconic franchise in the biggest sport so here we are," Harbaugh said.

John Harbaugh on Andy Reid's advice

Finding a successful second chapter can be difficult for head coaches. No one has thrived on that front quite like Andy Reid, under whom Harbaugh cut his teeth as an assistant teeth and special teams coordinator.

Harbaugh said Reid, who won three titles with the Kansas City Chiefs after spending 14 years with thePhiladelphia Eagles, had four words of wisdom for him: "Change can be good."

Harbaugh also said he'd gladly sign up for a tenure comparable to what Reid has achieved in 13 years with Kansas City.

John Harbaugh weighs in on Jaxson Dart

One of the most closely monitored aspects of John Harbaugh's tenure in New York will be his partnership with Jaxson Dart, the 2025 first-round pick who seized the starting quarterback reins.

Harbaugh lauded the signal-caller for his skill set but had his heaviest praise for Dart's disposition.

"I'm excited about Jaxson Dart," Harbaugh said. "You build your team around your quarterback. I like the way he plays. I like his talent, but more than that, I like who he is and what he's about."

In his first remarks as theNew York Giants' head coach, John Harbaugh laid out a clear and familiar vision.

Calling it a "profound honor" to take the reins to the team, Harbaugh said he wanted to establish a "physical and tough" group that is "capable of overwhelming their opponent."

"I know the fans are hungry for a winner," Harbaugh said. "We're here with one mission … to become, to earn the right to be called the world champions in New York."

Harbaugh also returned to some familiar family mantras and gave a shoutout to his brother, Jim Harbaugh.

"We're not in the AFC, Jim," Harbaugh said. "You can breathe easy."

Said Giants GM Joe Schoen: "When we set out, we were looking for a proven winner, an elite leader. We were lucky we were able to find both."

What John Harbaugh said after being named New York Giants head coach

As we await Harbaugh's arrival at noon, ET, here's what he said when the hire was made official on Jan. 17:

"I want to thank (owners) John Mara, Steve Tisch, Chris Mara, and (GM) Joe Schoen for the opportunity to lead theNew York Giants," Harbaugh said in a statement Saturday night. "To serve as this franchise's head coach is a tremendous honor. I come from a football family, and I have deep respect for the history and tradition of this organization.

"I'm excited to begin assembling our staff and getting to work building our team.
