United flight suffers mechanical issue after hard landing in Orlando

A United Airlines flight appeared to lose one of its landing gear wheels after a hard touchdown in Orlando on Jan. 18.

Social media videoshows the Airbus A321 touching down and bouncing on the runway – and then part of its gear appearing to roll off into the grass. United Airlines confirmed that an incident occurred, but not the detail about the wheel.

"United flight 2323 from Chicago to Orlando experienced a mechanical issue upon landing. Passengers were bused to the terminal and the aircraft was cleared from the runway. No injuries were reported," United Airlines told USA TODAY in an email.

According to the airline there were 200 passengers and six crewmembers aboard.

Local mediareportedthat a brief ground stop was instituted at the airport following the incident, and the weather was windy and rainy at the time of the landing.

Ground stops are often put in place after emergency landings or other incidents to give airport authorities time to check for debris or other hazards on the runway, and to respond to any pressing needs from the affected flight.
