German Shepherd Left on the Side of the Road With a 'Free Dog' Sign Gets a Second Chance When Someone Stops to HelpGabrielle LaFrankFri, October 30, 2026 at 3:45 AM UTC

Earlier this month, marathon runner Maddy Auerbacher rescued an abandoned dog she stumbled upon while running through Carlsbad, California. The handsome German Shepherd was tied to a trash can alongside a bag of food and a ‘free dog’ sign, but Maddy was determined to ensure this wasn’t where the abandoned dog’s journey would end.
It’s so heartwarming to know that this dog found a friend when he needed it most. He looked so lonely and confused after being left behind, but he was still the sweetest boy to everyone who came to his aid.
Viewers had nothing but love and praise for @maddyauerbacher, though some admitted they would have handled the situation differently. One commenter said, “Listen, if I stumble upon a sign that says free dog, the dog is mine, and we’re gonna live our best lives.”

Fair enough! That could be entirely feasible for some people, but for Maddy, adopting a dog in the middle of a run simply wasn’t in the cards—and that’s perfectly OK! She called the Carlsbad Police Department, who whisked the dog off to a local rescue for a second shot at life.
An Abandoned Dog’s New Chance
“Thank you for looking out for him! Sam is available at our Oceanside Campus,” the San Diego Humane Society commented. Another commenter, @crash0ut_chris, works at the very same shelter, and they brought Sam out into the play yard to take a few pictures and give everyone an update.
They posted, “I work here, and the sweet boy is doing amazing,” alongside a photo of the sweet Shepherd. A photo can only capture one moment in time, but he looks like he’s in great spirits.

What a resilient rescue dog! He’s been through so much in the last few weeks, but he’s already won over everyone at the humane society.

His adoption bio says, “Sam is the absolute definition of a happy-go-lucky pup. He greets every new friend with an eager smile, a furiously wagging tail, and an endless appetite for affection.”
It won’t be long until Sam finds the person he’s meant to spend the rest of his days with. It’s mind-blowing to imagine that one woman’s run saved the dog’s life after someone gave up on him, but I know his friends will make sure that no one ever leaves him behind again.
