Antoine de Massy, the 29-year-old second cousin of Prince Albert of Monaco, 68, has died.
“According to the local newspaper Monaco-Matin, de Massy was found dead on Oct. 25 in a park near the Villa Sauber museum in Monaco,” People reported on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
“Their Serene Highnesses Prince Albert II and Princess Charlène were saddened to learn of the death of Antoine de Massy, aged 29, the grandson of Princess Antoinette, the elder sister of Prince Rainier III,” read a statement from the Prince’s Palace, per People. “A keen tennis player, he was part of a family history closely linked to the sport in the Principality. Their Highnesses share in the grief of his family and loved ones and offer them their sincere condolences at this painful time.”
The death of de Massy was discovered after “a relative reportedly contacted Monaco’s Public Security Department” when they became “[c]oncerned that he had not attended a family lunch on Sunday,” according to Nice Matin. “A few hours later, his body was found in a green space along Boulevard du Larvotto, behind Villa Sauber.”
Nice Matin also reported that Monaco’s Attorney General confirmed that “an investigation was launched to determine the cause of death,” and while a person who was seen on CCTV footage in the area where de Massy’s body was discovered has been arrested, various causes of death are being considered and an accidental death still a possibility.
“Antoine de Massy was the grandson of Princess Antoinette, the elder sister of Albert’s father, Prince Rainier III,” and “the son of Baron Christian de Massy and Cécile Gelabale,” People noted. “He followed in the footsteps of his paternal grandfather, Alexandre-Athenase Noghes, an international tennis player, and hoped to represent Monaco in tennis at the Olympics.”
