At the Fort Wayne Zoo, adorable animal moments happen every day. Most of the time, it’s the zoo animals who make their adoring public smile, but every now and then, the zoo’s ‘Dog Days’ let well-behaved canine friends steal the show.
That’s exactly what happened when a sweet Golden Retriever approached the zebra exhibit on the zoo’s most recent Dog Day. At first, the dog and zebra didn’t pay much attention to one another, but before long, the zebra couldn’t get close enough to their new friend to satisfy their curiosity.
As if that wasn’t sweet enough, a zookeeper told the senior dog‘s mom that the zebra hadn’t been interested in dogs the entire day—at least not until Bruce came along!
I’ve watched this three times in a row, and I’m not done yet! I can feel Bruce’s gentle energy through the camera, and I think the zebra could sense it, too. Even though the rest of the herd was out in the middle of their very large enclosure, this one sensitive soul noticed someone new watching them, and they felt compelled to investigate.
“The zookeeper said that was the first time all day so far that the zebras showed any interest in the dogs!” the senior Golden‘s mom explained in the video’s caption. “Bruce truly was SO well-behaved the entire time, & he really does give off such gentle, comforting energy.”

It’s especially meaningful that Bruce shared this priceless moment with the shy zebra, because walking around the zoo was no easy feat for him. As a 10-year-old puppy mill rescue dog, he’s been through a lot and sometimes has trouble walking. Still, he’s determined not to let anything bring him down.
He recently found his voice for the first time, and now he’s meeting zoo animals–what else is in store for this lucky rescue dog?
Dogs Meeting Other Animals
The dog and zebra’s sweet meeting inspired other pet parents to share their own stories of dogs meeting other animals; one even came from the very same zoo day!
“The wolf was very intrigued by Samantha,” @samanthajodog wrote. “Samantha really didn’t have much interest in her.” That’s fascinating! I would love to see whether the dogs and wolves recognized something familiar in each other, but a dog-friendly zoo day doesn’t seem like the ideal way to find out.

Another dog mom shared, “We took our dog to an apple orchard that had a small petting zoo. The alpaca was completely fascinated by our little Rat Terrier.“
That’s adorable! Safe animal introductions are some of my favorite moments to witness, and I’m always thrilled when someone gets an introduction on camera like this. I hope you had a great time at the zoo, Bruce!
