WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Nearly 50% of the 30 busiest U.S. airports faced shortages of air traffic controllers, the Federal Aviation Administration said on Friday, leading to flight delays nationwide as a federal government shutdown hit its 31st day.

The absence of controllers on Friday is by far the most widespread since the shutdown began, with one of the worst-hit regions being New York, where 80% of air traffic controllers were out, the agency said.

At least 35 FAA facilities, including several at the largest U.S. airports, reported staffing problems. Airports affected included facilities in New York, Austin, Newark, Phoenix, Washington, Nashville, Dallas and Denver. At some airports, delays averaged one hour or more.

The shutdown has forced 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 Transportation Security Administration officers to work without pay.

"After 31 days without pay, air traffic controllers are under immense stress and fatigue," the FAA said late Friday.

"The shutdown must end so that these controllers receive the pay they've earned and travelers can avoid further disruptions and delays," it added.

The impact on the system would have been far worse on a typical Friday. However, Halloween evening traffic was 20% lower than usual, which helped mitigate the effects of staffing shortages, airline officials said.

More than 5,600 flights were delayed on Friday and 500 canceled, according to FlightAware, a flight tracking website.

At New York's LaGuardia Airport, 50% of flights were delayed and 12% canceled, with delays averaging 140 minutes, while Washington, D.C.'s Reagan National Airport had a quarter of flights delayed.

Airlines are bracing for more flight disruptions.

"Coming into this weekend and then the week after, I think you are going to see even more disruptions in the airspace," U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said on Fox News' "America's Newsroom."

CALLS FOR 'CONTINUING RESOLUTION'

On Thursday, air traffic control staffing shortages snarled flights at Orlando, Dallas/Fort Worth and Washington, D.C., when FlightAware data showed 7,300 flights delayed and 1,250 canceled across the United States.

Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, Southwest Airlines and American Airlines have all called on Congress to quickly pass a stop-gap funding bill known as a "continuing resolution" to let the government reopen amid talks on disputes over healthcare policy.

National Air Traffic Controllers Association President Nick Daniels on Friday joined the airlines in calling for a continuing resolution.

The government shutdown began on October 1 and continued as a federal funding bill has stalled in Congress.

Republican lawmakers want to pass a "clean" funding measure with no strings attached, while Democrats have demanded talks on extending healthcare subsidies set to expire at year-end.

Airlines have repeatedly urged an end to the shutdown, citing aviation safety risks.

The shutdown has exacerbated existing staffing shortages, threatening to cause widespread disruptions similar to those that helped end a 35-day government shutdown in 2019.

The FAA is about 3,500 air traffic controllers short of targeted staffing levels and many had been working mandatory overtime and six-day weeks even before the shutdown.

On *RuPaul's Drag Race* season 14, intimacy is defined by two things: finding Tic Tacs in crevices no sugared good should creep, and sharing your secret porn stash with your sisters.

As episode 2 challenge winner Angeria Paris VanMicheals tells EW in the latest installment of our *Quick Drag *recaps (airing Fridays at 10:05 ET / 7:05 PT on our Twitter Spaces), she experienced both within the first few hours of filming the Emmy-winning competition series' latest season. After becoming "very close" with Lady Camden, a U.K.-born starlet whose accent immediately charmed Angeria, the pair discovered a mutual fascination with more than just each other's drag styles: their taste in adult films, which led to "true love at first porn," according to Angeria.

Drag Race

Angeria Paris VanMicheals wrote her Drag Race talent show song in one day. World of Wonder/VH1

"It was our first break from filming, she mentioned that she had porn," Angeria explains in the podcast episode below. "The first thought in my head was, 'Oh my god, I left all my porn at home!' Flying to California, I didn't want TSA clocking my DVDs and stuff!"

She says that, after filming the episode, she mustered the courage to ask Lady Camden if the goods were transferrable between new* Drag Race* siblings.

"I was like, 'Lady Camden, can I borrow your porn?' and she was like, 'Yeah bitch, you can!' I watched it that day!" she explains.

She also got up close and personal at the day's mini challenge, which saw her posing for a fashion photo in a giant bowl of orange Tic Tacs: "My advice, if you are in a bowl of Tic Tacs, is to maybe wear some kind of suit over your outfit, because when you take it off, you're going to have a lot of Tic Tacs falling out of everywhere. I got back to the hotel, and Tic Tacs were still falling out of me."

Angeria also reveals that she wrote her challenge-winning song over the course of a single day, and chalked the Hollywood blockbuster-level theatrics (she exited the stage for a split-second only to return through heavy smoke from a fog machine) up to luck and an "executive decision" she made on set.

"We rehearsed it, and I said, 'Do we have fog? Can I have some fog, some smoke or something?'" Angeria recalls, noting that the production team allowed her to use a fog machine that was already fixed to the stage. "[I said]I was going to burst through that, and I'm going to serve!"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The White House plans to announce that Dutch chipmaker Nexperia's China facilities will resume shipments, a source said, in what would be a relief for auto manufacturers worldwide who faced the imminent prospect of curbing production.

The Dutch government seized control this month of Nexperia, owned by Chinese company Wingtech. The move prompted Beijing to block Nexperia products from leaving China.

The company produces large volumes of semiconductors in the Netherlands that are widely used in autos and consumer electronics. Some 70% of the Netherlands-produced chips are packaged in China and sold mostly to distributors.

The Chinese Commerce Ministry appeared to confirm the source's comments in a statement, saying it will consider exemptions for Nexperia chip exports from the country.

"As a responsible major country, China fully considers the security and stability of domestic and international production and supply chains," the ministry said, adding companies facing difficulty obtaining parts should contact Chinese authorities. "We will comprehensively consider the actual situation of the enterprise and exempt eligible exports."

The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment. It is expected to soon release a fact sheet offering more details on a trade truce between the U.S. and China that included Nexperia and was struck at a summit between U.S. President Donald Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in South Korea this week.

Nexperia makes basic, inexpensive power control chips such as transistors and diodes that cost only a few cents to buy. However, such chips are needed in almost every device that uses electricity.

In cars, they are used to connect the battery to motors, for lights and sensors, for braking systems, airbag controllers, entertainment systems and electric windows.

Automakers have warned the White House that without a steady supply of chips, significant U.S. auto production would begin to shut down in the coming weeks.

Honda suspended production at a Mexican plant on Tuesday, and has started to adjust production in the U.S. and Canada, a spokesperson said.

Reuters reported on Friday that Nexperia suspended supplies of wafers to its Chinese assembly plant, according to a letter addressed to its customers, which could exacerbate the supply squeeze.

Court filings showed that the seizure by the Dutch government came as U.S. pressure was rising on Nexperia after Wingtech was placed on a restricted-export list, though Dutch authorities say governance shortcomings were the trigger.

Industry bodies have sounded the alarm over the possible impact on production. On Thursday, Stellantis, which makes Jeep SUVs, said it had set up a "war room" to monitor the situation.

Japanese automaker Nissan said it had enough chips at the moment to last until the first week of November without disruption.

TORONTO (AP) — Shohei Ohtani might start Game 7 of the World Series on Saturday. Tyler Glasnow might pitch on back-to-back days. For Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, the only certainty is that Yoshinobu Yamamoto won't pitch. Besides that?

"Everyone will be available," Roberts said.

The Dodgers survived a wild ninth inning to hold off the Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 in Game 6, forcing the winner-take-all showdown Saturday night. Three-time Cy Young Award winner and former Dodger Max Scherzer is expected to start for the Blue Jays.

The Dodgers pitching plans are less certain, but they do include two-way Ohtani in some fashion. Roberts said Thursday that he'd consider using Ohtani as an opener or even as an outfielder in Game 7, and stuck with that after Game 6.

"I think right now, there's no wrong answer," Roberts said. "He's certainly going to be a part of the pitching plan. With Shohei it could be two innings, but it could be four innings. So I'm not sure where we're going to slot him. We're going to have to talk to him first on where he feels most comfortable."

If Ohtani entered as a reliever after starting the game as a designated hitter, he would need to play a position after pitching to remain in the game. The Dodgers would lose their DH.

Per MLB rules created to facilitate Ohtani's two-way status, Ohtani can remain in the game as a DH if he begins the game as the starting pitcher.

Ohtani threw 93 pitches in Wednesday's 6-2 loss in Game 4, allowing four runs and six hits in six innings.

Ohtani has never pitched in relief during his Major League Baseball career. He made a handful of relief appearances in Japan for the Pacific League's Hokkaido Nippon-Ham Fighters, mostly as a rookie in 2013. He closed out Japan's victory in the 2023 World Baseball Classic final against the United States, striking out then-Los Angeles Angels teammate Mike Trout for the final out.

Ohtani made seven outfield appearances with the Angels in 2021, the year before a rule was changed allowing starting pitchers to stay in games at DH after being removed from mound appearances.

Roberts surprised many by using Glasnow out of the bullpen to close out Game 6. Glasnow, Saturday's presumed starter, began warming in the ninth inning and relieved Roki Sasaki with runners on second and third and no outs. He got three outs on three pitches, including a popup by Ernie Clement and a line drive from Andres Gimenez that turned into a game-ending double play.

"I just felt right there, Roki wasn't as sharp," Roberts said. "Glas is a guy who has swing-and-miss stuff and I just wanted to bet on him. He's been champing at the bit to make an impact."

Glasnow allowed four runs, two earned, and five hits in 4 2/3 innings in Game 3, which the Dodgers won 6-5 in 18 innings.
