Brooklyn Beckham and Wife Nicola Peltz Beckham Take a Stroll in Malibu, Plus Justin Bieber, Chris Pine and More

Celebrities are everywhere this week. In California,Brooklyn Beckhamis spotted on a low-key stroll with wifeNicola Peltz ...

NEED TO KNOW

  • Elizabeth Smart was kidnapped from her bedroom on June 5, 2002

  • She lived nine months in captivity in the mountains outside Salt Lake City before she was rescued the following March

  • Now, she's opening up about the ordeals she went through in Netflix's Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart

Elizabeth Smartbecame a household name after she vanished from her bedroom on the night of June 5, 2002.

The then-14-year-old was snatched from her Salt Lake City home while she slept byBrian David Mitchell, who, at the time, was a man claiming to be a prophet named Emmanuel. Mitchell and his wife,Wanda Barzee, held Elizabeth captive for the next nine months — subjecting her to horrific abuse, including daily violent sexual assaults.

But on March 12, 2003, Elizabeth and her kidnappers were spotted walking in Sandy, Utah. Despite wearing a disguise and giving police a fake name, she was ultimately saved by authorities and reunited with her family, who had searched tirelessly for her while she was missing.

At the time, Elizabeth's kidnapping and unlikely rescue gripped headlines around the world. In the years since, her story of survival has been retold in documentaries and TV movies. But now, Elizabeth is opening up about her ordeal like never before in the Netflix documentaryKidnapped: Elizabeth Smart.

In the documentary, which began streaming on Jan. 21, Elizabeth —now a mother of three— tells the story of her abduction in unfiltered detail. The documentary includes never-before-seen archival footage, as well as first-person accounts from members of her family and the law enforcement officers who worked her case.

From missteps in the police investigation to the harrowing details of Elizabeth's time spent in captivity, here are 10 shocking bombshells revealed inKidnapped: Elizabeth Smart.

Ed Smart said he was admitted to a psychiatric ward in the days following Elizabeth's kidnapping

Courtesy of Netflix Elizabeth Smart and her father Ed in 'Kidnapped: Elizabeth Smart'.

One of the police's earliest working theories about what happened to Elizabeth was thather parents— particularly her father,Ed Smart— were involved in her disappearance. Within days of her going missing, police zeroed in on Ed as a suspect and the revelation left him devastated.

"I was overwhelmed to the point that I was shaking and I couldn't stop shaking," Ed shared in the documentary.

Ed was so distraught that his father brought him to the hospital, where he was placed in the psychiatric ward.

"I cried that whole night," Ed recalled. "To have your daughter go missing is horrendous. And then to be a possible suspect — I was beyond words."

Tom Smart, Elizabeth's uncle, said he was "hearing things" when he failed a polygraph test

Mauricio Menjivar/Getty Elizabeth Smart's family speaks at a news conference on June 20, 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Mauricio Menjivar/Getty

Police also considered Ed's brothers, Tom and Dave Smart, as potential suspects in Elizabeth's disappearance. Tom came under particular scrutiny after he gavean interview to CNN's Nancy Gracea week after Elizabeth vanished.

In the interview, Tom referred to Elizabeth's kidnapping as a "wonderful story" and alleged that the person who took her was "not a bad person at all" — rather, "somebody who actually likes Elizabeth."

In addition to the troublesome interview, Tom also failed a polygraph test. But in the documentary, Tom explained how the strain of Elizabeth's disappearance affected him mentally.

"In a situation like a kidnapping where it doesn't seem like there's much you can do other than keep turning over stones, neighborhoods, people," Tom said, "After three or four days of that, with no sleep, you tend to collapse on yourself."

He continued, "When I'd been polygraphed, it'd been five and a half days into it. I mean, I was hearing things."

The family claimed the cops' focus on them was detrimental to the search effort

While the authorities were investigating the Smart family, both the media coverage and the public response toward them shifted, according to their accounts in the documentary. As a result, they claimed the community effort toward finding Elizabeth dropped dramatically.

"It was dumbfounding as to how long it took the police essentially to clear the family," Ed said. "And as the finger was pointed at us, we saw a real drop in people that were coming to help us search."

Dave added, "The numbers just took a dive. I don't think those reporters realized the impact that they had."

The Smart family was eventually cleared by the police. Cory Lyman, the lead investigator in the case, defended their scrutiny of the family.

"There's a standard in these kinds of cases. The families get looked at, and it's really, really tough on them," Lyman said. "But their alibis checked out, and with all of the computers we'd seized, emails we'd looked at, we did not find anything suspicious."

Elizabeth's sister Mary Katherine told police that their prime suspect, Richard Ricci, didn't do it

Jason Olson-Pool/Deseret News via Getty Richard Albert Ricci speaks with attorney David Smith at the Matheson Courthouse July 31, 2002 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Cops zeroed in on Richard Ricci, a man with a lengthy rap sheet who had done contracting work on the Smart home, after they learned he had had a dispute with Ed over wages. A subsequent search of Ricci's home uncovered stolen jewelry items of Elizabeth's mom Lois. On the night of the kidnapping, police learned that Ricci had driven hundreds of miles with no explanation.

"We had reports that someone had seen him removing digging tools out of the vehicle at that time," Lyman revealed, which led police to develop the theory that Ricci had abducted Elizabeth and disposed of her body hundreds of miles away.

While the lead seemed promising, there was one major issue.

"The police said we're 99.9% sure we've got our man," Tom said. "But here's the thing: The only eyewitness said it wasn't him."

Mary Katherine Smart, Elizabeth's sister who witnessed the kidnapping and heard the abductor's voice, insisted that Ricci was not the perpetrator. But despite her confidence that Ricci was not the man who took her sister, police were "convinced Ricci was the prime suspect," Ed shared.

"Mary Katherine had been asleep. She would have been groggy," Cordon Parks, a detective on the case, explained about why they didn't take her statements seriously at the time. "The reports we had said she kept her eyes shut during the abduction. Maybe she didn't really realize it had been Ricci."

Ricci was kept in custody until he suffered a brain aneurysm and fell into a coma,CNNreported. He died on Aug. 30, 2002. When Ricci died, police were concerned that their hopes of finding Elizabeth had died with him.

Mary Katherine had insisted since her initial interviews with the police that the voice of Elizabeth's kidnapper was familiar to her. Around four months after Elizabeth's abduction, Mary Katherine suddenly remembered the name of the man's voice that she had heard that fateful night: "Emmanuel."

"Emmanuel" was a homeless person whom Lois and the children had encountered around a year prior in downtown Salt Lake City. When they witnessed him preaching, Lois gave him her husband's card and told him to reach out for work. Ed hired "Emmanuel" to do a few odd jobs around the house, which is where Mary Katherine had previously heard his voice.

But while the Smarts viewed Mary Katherine's recollection as a major breakthrough in Elizabeth's case, the police were skeptical.

"I was not convinced," Lyman said in the documentary. "Emmanuel had not appeared on any of the lists of the people we were investigating. He was there for three hours one day and then didn't even come back to get paid."

Parks shared similar thoughts. "Quite frankly, her memory of Emmanuel being the kidnapper came under some disbelief on the part of the investigators," he said. "There was some speculation that her memory might not be accurate."

This was met with great frustration by the Smart family. "I mean, for heaven's sake, what more do you need?" Ed said. "You have this child, who is sitting in this room watching her sister being taken, that comes forward and says, 'This is who I think it is.' "

Elizabeth was left bleeding and unconscious after Mitchell raped her for the first time

Elizabeth opened up about the details of her sexual assault in the documentary, describing in harrowing detail how Mitchell raped her for the first time after kidnapping her, taking her to a desolate encampment deep in the woods, and marrying her in a makeshift ceremony.

"I remember thinking, 'If I can hold him off just long enough, someone will rescue me,' " Elizabeth shared about the initial assault. "But he pushed me onto the ground and, like, I had led such an innocent life. I thought that if I rolled onto my stomach, that he wouldn't be able to rape me."

She continued, "It didn't matter what I did. Ultimately, he raped me. And I remember being in a lot of pain. I remember begging him to stop."

When it was over, Mitchell smiled at her "like it wasn't a big deal" and left her on the ground of the tent. But Elizabethwas physically and emotionally traumatized.

"I just remember hurting so much physically," she recalled. "I remember looking down, and I could see blood running down my thighs. And then I must have passed out."

Mitchell continued to force Elizabeth to have sex with him regularly throughout her nine months in captivity.

"I had gone from not even holding a boy's hand to being raped every day, multiple times a day," she recalled in the documentary, describing how it was not "uncommon" to wake up to Mitchell raping her.

Because of her strict religious upbringing, Elizabeth shared how she felt a lot of "shame" surrounding being raped, so much so that she even believed she was better off never being rescued.

"No one had discussed with me the difference between, like, consensual sex, intimacy, versus rape," she explained in the documentary. "I felt like I was filthy. I thought if my family knew what had happened to me, would they still want me back? Maybe it would be better if nobody ever found me."

In addition to being raped regularly, Elizabeth was tormented by her captors — including being chained, tied up and forced to drink alcohol.

"Every day, he would humiliate me," she described. "When he took me down to the spring where we would collect the water from, he would hold on to the cable and basically walk me like a dog."

She continued, "I was forced to drink beer after beer until I finally threw up, and he just left me there, face down in my own vomit."

Mitchell would also withhold food if she didn't comply with his orders and threatened to kill her or her family if she disobeyed him.

"I'd been extremely abused for months," she said of her time in captivity.

In August 2002, "Emmanuel" and "Hephzibah," Wanda's alias, got in a fight, Elizabeth claimed, that resulted in the three of them leaving the mountains and heading down to Salt Lake City. While the three were in a library looking at maps, a homicide detective approached them.

He introduced himself and said he needed to see Elizabeth's face, which was covered, to make sure she wasn't the girl the police were looking for.

"Emmanuel was like 'I'm sorry, but no. That would be against our faith, against our religion. The only people who will see her face are her future husband and myself, her father,' " Elizabeth recalled.

Though she wanted to yell out, Hephzibah grabbed her leg as a warning sign, scaring Elizabeth into silence. Eventually, the homicide detective bought the story and walked away.

"I didn't feel safe enough crying out, and that lifeline disappeared," she said.

Parks believes Mitchell faked his insanity defense

Despite being captured and arrested in March 2003, Mitchell didn't face trial in the case until March 2010. The seven-year-long delay was the result of several competency hearings held to determine if Mitchell was mentally fit to stand trial — a tactic Parks believes Mitchell used intentionally.

"I found him very crafty," Parks said. "Brian David Mitchell is a terrible pedophile who justifies himself through God and he's capable of anything."

Parks continued, "I don't think he was mentally ill at all. I think he was playing for a mental health issue and it worked. The district court judge delayed the trial and delayed the trial."

Though the delays were frustrating, there was one silver lining to the time that passed: "time to heal" before Elizabeth and her family had to face Mitchell in court, Ed said.

TheCleopatrastar was engaged 10 times over the course of her lifetime and gotmarried eighttimes — twice to the same man, actorRichard Burton. On her ring finger, she wore everything from a large sapphire to a 29-carat diamond.

Taylor, who died of congestive heart failure in March 2011, amassed such an impressivecollection of jewelrythat she wrote a 2003 book on the subject titledElizabeth Taylor: My Love Affair with Jewelry.

"I feel as though I'm only the custodian of my jewelry," she wrote in her book, perWWD. "When I die and they go off to auction, I hope whoever buys them gives them a really good home."

Here's everything to know about Elizabeth Taylor's engagement rings.

Taylor first got engaged to U.S. army pilot William Pawley Jr., whom she met while she was 17 years old on vacation in Florida, per the star'swebsite. The two got engaged within months of meeting one another in 1949.

Pawley Jr. gave Taylor her first-ever white diamond engagement ring, which had a cushion-cut design.

According to theLos Angeles Times, the pair announced their engagement in June 1949, but had called things off by the fall.

Letters between the couple, which were auctioned off in May 2011, revealed that Taylor gave Pawley Jr. back the ring following their split. "I received your wire this morning about sending the ring and bracelet to New York," she wrote on Sept. 20, 1949, perABC.

"I have the ring on now," she continued. "It is sparkling so beautifully in the sunshine — I suppose this will be the last time I have it on — for a while at least."

She ended her note with the words, "Take good care of it, darling — for my heart is embeded [sic] right there in the center of it."

Taylor received another engagement ring, whichTheNew York Timesdescribed as a 4-carat diamond with a platinum setting, from her first husband,Conrad "Nicky" Hilton Jr. They wed on May 6, 1950.

The union didn't last, however. Following an ill-fated, three-month-long honeymoon, the newlyweds called it quits on their marriage. During the trip, Hilton "became sullen, angry and abusive, physically and mentally," Taylor wrote in her 1988 autobiographyElizabeth Takes Off.

TheNew York Timesreported their split in December 1950, and their divorce was finalized on Jan. 29, 1951, according toEntertainment Weekly.

Taylor's engagement ring from British actor Michael Wilding was unique. According toThe New York Times, it featured a large sapphire encircled by two rows of diamonds.

The actress was photographed in the eye-catching piece at La Guardia Field while en route to Wilding's London just days ahead of their Feb. 21, 1952, wedding.

They welcomed two children during their time together: Michael Wilding Jr., who was born on Jan. 6, 1953, and Christopher Wilding, born on Feb. 27, 1955.

The twosome underwent a "friendly divorce" in 1957, according to Wilding's obituary inThe Washington Post.

Taylor received an enormous rock from producer Mike Todd ahead of their Feb. 2, 1957, nuptials. Weighing in at 29 carats, she called the emerald-cut piece "an extraordinary stone."

Taylor opened up about the events leading up to Mike's proposal in her December 1964Lifecover story. According to the actress, her soon-to-be third husband called her the day after her separation from Wilding was publicly announced.

"He sort of plunked me down on the couch ... and started in on a spiel that lasted about a half hour without a stop, saying that he loved me and that there was no question about it, we're going to be married," she said.

She later wrote inElizabeth Takes Off, "He didn't ask me, he told me."

During their marriage, the couple welcomed daughter Liza Todd on Aug. 6, 1957. The couple's relationship was tragically cut short in March 1958, when Todd was killed in a plane crash.

Elizabeth continued to wear his engagement ring — as well as other gifts she received from Todd, including her $4.2 million tiara, which she wore to the 1957 Oscars.

Todd's engagement ring proved hard to compete with, so her fourth husband, singerEddie Fisher, to whom she was wed from 1959 to 1964, didn't try. Instead, he gave Taylor a 50-diamond bracelet, which she wore to Fisher's opening performance at the Tropicana Hotel.

The couple ultimately signed their marriage certificates justthree hoursafter Fisher's divorce fromDebbie Reynoldswas finalized in 1959.

However, they split after a tumultuous relationship, divorcing in 1964.

Taylor also received an unconventional engagement piece from her fifth (and sixth) husband andCleopatracostar Burton, whom she married twice.

In place of a ring, Burton presented his bride-to-be with a Bulgari emerald brooch and teardrop earrings, per WWD. Taylor even pinned the brooch to her wedding gown at the duo's March 15, 1964, wedding. (Burton later had it turned into a necklace with 16 Columbian emeralds.)

The actor later gave Taylor an 18.6-carat Bulgari emerald ring with pear-cut diamonds on their wedding day. During their marriage, he gifted her with a number of flashy pieces, including the famous 69.42-carat Harry Winston Taylor-Burton diamond, according toThe New York Times.

Before marrying Burton, Taylor was in the process of adopting daughter Maria McKeown, who was born on Jan. 8, 1961. Burton eventually adopted Maria as well.

As for the couple, they divorced in June 1974. One year later, they remarried on Oct. 10, 1975, but split once more after several months.

Aspiring U.S. Senate candidate John Warner popped the question to Taylor with a red, white and blue ring comprised of rubies, diamonds and blue sapphires.

According toTheNew York Times, Warner had the piece custom-designed for his future wife.

The couple exchanged their vows on Dec. 4, 1976, and stayed together for the next six years, including as he was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1979. However, the life of a politician's wife didn't suit Taylor.

"I was told to wear tweeds," she told PEOPLE in 2006. "I couldn't wear purple or Halston pantsuits."

Ultimately, distance was too much for the pair. "For a while, we just managed married life. Then she started plays in London and that became a little more difficult, and finally we just said, 'Hey, let's always remain good friends but let's take the legal part and ... go our separate ways,' " Warner told PEOPLE in March 2011. "And that's how it happened."

He added, "We never had any real infractions between us. It was just that I became so absorbed in the Senate."

PEOPLE reported at the time that the twosome had tied the knot with a simple pavé-encrusted diamond band, which she wore for the first time on their big day.

Though Taylor and Fortensky split in 1996, they stayed friends throughout her lifetime. "I have wonderful memories of my time with Elizabeth, and I will treasure her memory forever," Fortensky told PEOPLE in April 2011. "I love her. I always will. And I know she loved me, too."

Police improved community relations after George Floyd. Is ICE a setback?

Booming flash bangs and fireworks rattled the frigid windows of Michelle Gross' home in North Minneapolis.

"It sounded like a war zone outside,' Gross said about the confrontation between federal agents throwing grenades and protesters lighting firecrackers on Jan. 14, after a man was shot. "I really feel like our federal government is out to get us. I never, ever thought I would say anything like this."

Gross, 68, the longtime leader of the nonprofitCommunities United Against Police Brutality, said she was just starting to feel better about the Minneapolis Police Department, six years after the murder of George Floyd.

But now, she said, that trust will evaporate unless she sees the police stand up to ICE and other federal authorities.

Crowds gathered at the intersection of Third Street N and 33rd Avenue N in St. Cloud as ICE agents came through the area Jan. 12.

Federal agents continue surge of immigration enforcement in Minnesota

"I think the Minneapolis Police, a department that is desperately in need of rehabilitating their reputation, could be the heroes if they stand up to the feds," Gross said. "Some people feel they are either letting ICE attack the community by standing by, or they are helping them."

Confrontations between the public and federal agents across the country have put local police in a difficult spot. If they side with immigration agents, they will alienate area residents, who they need as crime-fighting allies. If they side with local residents, they put themselves at odds with larger, better-armed federal forces.

Courts may eventually resolve some of the power imbalance, but in the meantime, local police have a tightrope to walk.

"I get with local law enforcement that their hands are somewhat tied, and they don't want to be caught up in this, but at the same time, they don't want to close the door to at least having effective communication with the federal agents and ICE and CBP agents that are working in their jurisdiction," saidJill Snider, a retired New York Police Department detective and criminal justice director for the R Street Institute on pubic policy. "I have a lot of empathy for local law enforcement right now."

Federal, local officers acting like adversaries

As tensions remain in Minneapolis, Snider said she's worried about other ICE operations including Portland, Oregon, where more than 1,100 immigration arrests have been made since January 2025, andtwo protesters were shot by federal agentsearlier this month.

Her concerns also extend to the state of Maine, where federal officials said they havemade more than 100 arrestsin the first three days of what they call "Operation Catch of the Day."

In both of those states, local law enforcement are not cooperating with federal officers. Maine'snew lawprohibiting its law enforcement from investigating, detaining, arresting, or searching a person solely for immigration enforcement purposes is in effect months earlier than initially scheduled.

"It seems clear that the relationship between local law enforcement and the Justice Department has become adversarial, and these tensions seem like they've been intentionally created and enflamed by the federal government," said Stacey Young, a former 18-year employee of the Department of Justice who served as a Senior Attorney in the Civil Division and later in the Civil Rights Division. "We're likely to see a continued erosion of trust in American communities like Minneapolis and Portland."

U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) agents stand guard during a protest outside the Whipple Federal Building, more than a week after a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent fatally shot Renee Nicole Good on January 7, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, U.S., January 16, 2026.

Regular citizens likely don't understand the difference between local police and federal officials, painting them both with the same brush, said Snider, who also teaches at theJohn Jay College of Criminal Justicein New York City.

Snider worries that if the agencies are operating in silos or at cross purposes, it could cause more harm than good, especially for local police.

"This could lead to fewer people willing to call 911 if they are the victim of a crime, they're maybe less likely to cooperate if they are a witness to a crime, and police really rely on that type of information from the general public when they are trying to solve crimes," Snider said.  "Now, it seems more and more people are becoming skeptical of any actions that law enforcement is taking."

Minneapolis still recovering from George Floyd's murder

The Minneapolis police department has tried since the shooting of George Floyd in 2020 to improve their relationship with residents.

"There's been some good progress made between the (Minneapolis) police and the community," saidMinnesota State Sen. Aisha Gomez, a Democrat whose district includes the south Minneapolis neighborhood where an ICE agentfatally shot Renee Nicole Goodon Jan. 7. "But, all it will take is another really bad episode to challenge the work that has been done."

MinneapolisMayor Jacob FreytoldCNN on Jan. 22that his city has worked for years with federal agencies, including the ATF, FBI, DEA and the U.S. Attorney's office, to drive down violent crime. Frey cited a partnership that has worked especially well in North Minneapolis, where shootings are now at a record low.

"If this (situation with immigration agents) were about safety, there would be a whole lot of opportunity to partner up and do it. But this is not about safety, it's not even about immigration," Frey said. "What we are seeing right now, this is about political retribution, and it's about causing chaos on our streets. No, it's not helpful."

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara (R) shakes hands with Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (L) after he addressed the findings of a Justice Department investigation into the Minneapolis Police Department during a press conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 16, 2023. The Department of Justice released a damning report today on the Minneapolis police following the murder of George Floyd by former police officer Derek Chauvin in 2020.

The F-bomb heard across America:Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey tries to break ICE

Minnesota State House Republican Floor LeaderHarry Niska, of suburban Ramsey, in a Jan. 15 statement accused state Democratic leaders of using  "extreme and reckless rhetoric," and said the unnecessary tension between local and federal officials could be easily defused.

"Here in Minnesota, the solution is straightforward," Niska said. "Defying federal law and demonizing federal law enforcement is not working and is only making the situation worse."

Either way, local police are in the middle, trying to strike "a delicate balance," saidMichael Burbank, a vice president of law enforcement initiatives at the Center for Policing Equity.

"More communication, compassion, and transparency are needed to make people understand what's happening for everybody's sake," Burbank said. "And perhaps less rhetoric, from both sides."

Since former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was accused and later convicted of killing of George Floyd, the department has been under a microscope, he noted.

The police departments of Minneapolis and neighboring St. Paul have 1,400 officers combined; there are reportedly 3,000 immigration agents in the region at the moment.

MinnesotaState Senate President Bobby Joe Champion, whose north Minneapolis district was the site of the second federal agent shooting on Jan. 14, recalled a resident asking him whether they could get through this unprecedented crisis.

"I told them I think we will get through this, but the question is what sort of shape will we be in when we get to the other side?" Champion said, as he was out in his north Minneapolis district in freezing temperatures trying to calm residents down. "And I'm not just talking about what's happening in Minneapolis and Minnesota, I'm talking about the entire nation."

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara toldCNN on Jan. 22that he's seen several videos of federal agents using force with residents in ways that "do not align at all with Minneapolis Police policy or, in general, law enforcement training in the state of Minnesota."

The chief said those actions have an impact on all law enforcement, including the Minneapolis Police and its relationship with the community.

"The cops in this town have worked very hard over the last five years to try and rebuild the trust that was completely lost in 2020," O'Hara said. "Those officers lived for years through a time where, you know, they couldn't even go to local businesses and feel welcome.

"They felt ostracized wherever they went in this city," O'Hara continued. "They worked very, very hard to change the relationship with the community, and the concern is that what is happening here today is jeopardizing their hard work."
