Matt Fitzpatrick birdies final hole to rally for Valspar Championship title

England's Matt Fitzpatrick got the job done a week after coming up just short.

Field Level Media

Fitzpatrick made a 14-foot putt for birdie on the final hole and waited for two groups behind him to finish, winning the Valspar Championship by shooting 3-under-par 68 on Sunday at Palm Harbor, Fla.

"I was playing well going into this week, obviously wanted to continue that and I felt like I had confidence in myself to do so," Fitzpatrick said. "Then obviously to sort of do that over four rounds was special this week."

It was a form of redemption for Fitzpatrick, who a week earlier was the runner-up in The Players Championship.

Fitzpatrick finished at 11-under 273 on Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club's Copperhead Course, one stroke better than David Lipsky to secure his third victory on the PGA Tour.

To drain a pressure putt added to the pleasure.

"To get it done like that was special," Fitzpatrick said.

Lipsky, who posted 70, almost rolled in a 33-foot birdie putt on No. 18 to force a playoff, but needed a tap-in to finish his round. It was nearly an incredible recovery after his tee shot was in the fairway rough on that hole.

Yet the week's work marked a significant step for Lipsky.

"This week was an awesome week and I'm really looking forward to seeing what events I get into the rest of the year and trying to play my way into those playoffs," Lipsky said.

Fitzpatrick had a consistent tournament, turning in 68s for the first, third and fourth rounds. He last won on the tour at the 2023 RBC Heritage.

"To obviously come away with a win this week is really special, considering last week's performance as well," Fitzpatrick said.

Fitzpatrick wasn't the lone Englishman with some excitement. Jordan Smith shot 66, putting him in third place for his best finish on the PGA Tour. Smith played the final 14 holes in 5 under after starting with a pair of birdies followed by a pair of bogeys.

"We got off to a nice quick start, and then before you know it, we were in the hunt there," Smith said. "So, it's just nice to know that we can get there."

Smith said he thrived on the opportunity to make a run toward the top.

"I always watch the leaderboards, I like to know where I am," Smith said. "It's just nice that in those situations I know what to do."

South Korea's Sungjae Im shot 74, tying for fourth place with Xander Schauffele (65) and England's Marco Penge (71) at 8 under.

Im, who was atop the leaderboard after each of the first three rounds, fell from the top spot quickly on Sunday. He had bogeys on three of the first six holes and five of the first 10. He rallied to pull within two strokes with two holes to play but couldn't complete the comeback.

Im was joined in the final pairing by Brandt Snedeker, who also struggled. Snedeker shot 76, finishing at 4 under and in a tie for 18th place.

Snedeker, who was seeking his first victory since 2018, had a three-putt double-bogey on the 12th hole that cost him a share of the lead and never recovered.

"Stood on the 10th tee tied for the lead, which is all you can do," Snedeker said. "My swing left me on the back nine. I really struggled. I couldn't really find anything to put the ball where I wanted to."

Schauffele and Argentina's Emiliano Grillo, who ended in a seventh-place logjam at 7 under, had the final day's best rounds at 65.

Paapa Essiedu says he's been subject to racist "abuse" after being cast as Severus Snape in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series.

Key Points

  • Essiedu told The Times he's been told, "'Quit, or I'll murder you.'"

  • Essiedu previously signed an open letter standing with the trans community against a U.K. Supreme Court ruling in favor of a motion supported by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.

Paapa Essiedu is speaking out on "abuse" he's endured since being cast as Severus Snape in HBO's upcomingHarry Potterseries.

"I've been told, 'Quit, or I'll murder you,'" the actor toldThe Timesin career-spanning interview published Saturday.

Essiedu is English of Ghanian descent. Though he's played famous figures like George Boleyn (Channel 5'sAnne Boleyn) and beloved characters from the literary canon (he played Romeo in a 2015 production ofRomeo and Juliet) alike, he shared that theHarry Pottercasting has brought out the most vicious racist backlash.

"The reality is that if I look at Instagram I will see somebody saying, 'I'm going to come to your house and kill you,'" he said. "While I hope I'll be okay, nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job."

Essiedu and theHarry Potterseries' core adult castwere announced last April. TheI May Destroy You Starwas picked to bring new life to the role played by Alan Rickman in the film series, which closely adapted the novels by controversial author J.K. Rowling.

Joining Essiedu at Hogwarts and beyond are John Lithgow, who was cast as the sage schoolmaster Albus Dumbledore; Janet McTeer, who will play senior teacher Minerva McGonagall; and Nick Frost, who steps into the role of half-giant Rubeus Hagrid.

Essiedu is keenly aware of the "big commitment" the series will impose on his life, the actor toldThe Times.

"I'll be 45 by the time I finish, and I know my life is going to change in a big way, but I have to just surrender to that. I could have children by the end of this," he continued.

The size of the commitment plays a role in Essiedu's response to the hate he's received.

"Many people put their lives on the line in their work," he said. "I'm playing a wizard inHarry Potter. And I'd be lying if I said it doesn't affect me emotionally."

But he's resolved to rise above: "The abuse fuels me. And makes me more passionate about making this character my own, because I think of how I felt as a kid. I would imagine myself at Hogwarts on broomsticks, and the idea that a kid like me can see themselves represented in that world? That's motivation to not be intimidated by someone saying they'd rather I died instead of doing work I'm going to be really proud of."

Essiedu said that while he hasn't reported any of the death threats, he can't dismiss them either.

"Even if you successfully ignore it, it doesn't mean it's not happening... The issue remains endemic and, anyway, people see stuff and message to ask if I'm okay," he said.

TheHarry Potterseries has already played host to some controversy. Rowling, who has beenwidely condemnedfor espousing views deemed anti-trans, commented last May onEssiedu signing an open letterstanding in solidarity with the trans community after the U.K. Supreme Court ruled in favor of a motion she supported, which sought to tie the legal definition of womanhood to biological sex.

"I don't have the power to sack an actor from the series," she said, regarding speculation that she may take action against Essiedu based on his opposing stance. "I don't believe in taking away people's jobs or livelihoods because they hold legally protected beliefs that differ from mine."

Lithgow shared on Friday that heconsidered quitting the seriesdue to Rowling's views. Ultimately he decided to remain as Dumbledore, noting, "If you read through theHarry Pottercanon, you see absolutely no trace of transphobic sensibility."

  • "Donald Trump should keep his reckless mouth shut before he gets somebody killed," Jeffries told CNN's Dana Bash on Sunday.

  • Jeffries further alleged that since Trump retook the presidency, "Life is more expensive, life is more chaotic, and life is more extreme."

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries pulled no punches when asked to respond toPresident Donald Trumpbranding him an "enemy" of the United States.

"Donald Trump should keep his reckless mouth shut before he gets somebody killed," the Democratic politician told CNN's Dana Bash at the close of an interview on Sunday's episode ofState of the Union.

Trump and Jeffries have publicly traded bitter words many times since the former's rise to political power in the mid-2010s. But this latest exchange marks an exceptional heightening of tensions between two of the most influential politicians in Washington.

Entertainment Weeklyhas reached out to the White House for comment.

"Now with the death of Iran, the greatest enemy America has is the Radical Left, Highly Incompetent, Democrat Party! Thank you for your attention to this matter. President DJT," the president wrote inone post.

The comment was one among many the president shared to Truth Social that day lashing out atDemocrats, who have mobilizedin response to Trump launching the nation into war against Iran.

"The Radical Left Democrats have hurt so many people with their vicious and uncaring ways. What they have done to the Department of Homeland Security, our fantastic TSA Officers, and, most importantly, the great people of our Country, is an absolute disgrace," hewrote in anotherpost to the social media platform he owns. Trump was attempting to justify his decision tosend Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents into airportsamid a partial government shutdown impacting Transportation Security Administration workers.

Jeffries, who serves as the chief spokesperson and strategist for the Democratic members of the House of Representatives, condemned Trump's deployment of ICE into airports.

"It's unfortunate that Republicans have decided that they would rather force TSA agents to work without pay, inconvenience millions of Americans all across the country, and now potentially expose them to untrained ICE agents and create chaos at airports throughout the land," Jeffries said, than work to end the partial shutdown.

Trump and his administration have lately been the subject of much scorn and mockery during his second term; for one, Conan O'Brien worked severaljabs at the current presidential administrationinto his monologue and interstitial bits at the 2026 Oscars.

"Welcome back! We're coming to you live from the Has a Small Penis Theater," he said after one commercial break. "Let's see him put his name in front of that!"

Trump's controversial rebranding of the the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. tothe Trump-Kennedy Centerhas elicited widespread mockery and condemnation, including from several members of the extended Kennedy clan.

Trump places statue of Christopher Columbus near the White House

ANNAPOLIS, Md. (AP) — A statue of Christopher Columbus has been placed on the grounds of the Eisenhower Executive Office Building adjacent to the White House, the latest effort by President Donald Trump's administration to recognize the controversial explorer.

The statue isa replicaof one that was tossed into Baltimore's harbor in 2020 during Trump's first term at a time of nationwide protests against institutional racism.

Trump endorses a traditional view of Columbus as a leader of the 1492 mission seen as the unofficial beginning of European colonization in the Americas and the development of the modern economic and political order. But in recent years, Columbus also has been recognized as a primary example of Western Europe's conquest of the New World, its resources and its native people.

"In this White House, Christopher Columbus is a hero, and President Trump will ensure he's honored as such for generations to come," the White House posted on X.

"We are delighted the statue has found a place where it can peacefully shine and be protected," said John Pica, a Maryland lobbyist and president of the Italian American Organizations United, which owns the statue and agreed to loan it to the federal government for placement at or near the White House.

The statue, made mostly of marble, was created by Will Hemsley, a sculptor based in Centreville on Maryland's Eastern Shore.

The original statue was toppled by protesters on July 4, 2020, and thrown into Baltimore's Inner Harbor after anger boiled over following thedeath of George Floydat the hands of police. It was one of many statues of Columbus that were vandalized around the same time, with protesters saying the Italian explorer was responsible for the genocide and exploitation of native peoples in the Americas.

In recent years, some people, institutions and government entities have displaced Columbus Day with recognition of Indigenous Peoples Day. President Joe Biden in 2021 became thefirst U.S. president to markIndigenous Peoples Day with a proclamation.

Trump dismisses the shift on Columbus as "left-wing arsonists" bending history and twisting Americans' collective memory. "I'm bringing Columbus Day back from the ashes.,"he declared last April. Echoing his 2024 campaign rhetoric, he complained that "Democrats did everything possible to destroy Christopher Columbus, his reputation, and all of the Italians that love him so much."
