Reports: Sun moving to Houston in '27 after sale to Fertitta family

The Fertitta family, which owns the NBA's Houston Rockets, are purchasing the WNBA's Connecticut Sun with the intention of moving the team to Houston, PaperCity Magazine and ESPN reported Friday.

Field Level Media

The upcoming season will be the last the Sun play in Connecticut, their home since 2003, before relocating to Houston ahead of the 2027 season. They will be renamed the Houston Comets after the city's previous WNBA franchise, according to PaperCity.

ESPN reported that the Fertittas purchased the Sun for $300 million.

The Mohegan Tribe, current owners of the Sun, entertained offers to sell the team last year. The state of Connecticut proposed a plan to keep the team in-state but move it to the capital of Hartford, while former Milwaukee Bucks co-owner Marc Lasry submitted an offer and reportedly wanted to move the team to Boston.

The Fertitta family, led by Rockets owner Tilman Fertitta, entered the picture with reports of their interest surfacing in December.

Houston had also pursued an expansion franchise, but the WNBA instead selected Cleveland, Detroit and Philadelphia in the latest round of expansion deals.

The Mohegan Tribe purchased the team formerly known as the Orlando Miracle and moved them to Uncasville, Conn., in 2003. They sent a letter to fans last season promising the team would spend at least the 2026 season in their current home of Mohegan Sun Arena.

The Sun have never won a WNBA title but have lost four times in the league finals, most recently in 2022.

Golf-Tiger Woods arrested on DUI charge after Florida car crash

March 27 (Reuters) - Former world number one Tiger Woods was arrested on a charge of driving under the influence after his Land Rover rolled over on a two-lane road near his Jupiter Island home in Florida ‌on Friday afternoon, the Martin County Sheriff's Office said.

Reuters

The 15-times major champion had been overtaking a work truck ‌pulling a trailer at high speed when he clipped the back of it, causing his vehicle to roll onto its driver's side, Sheriff John Budensiek told a press conference.

Woods, 50, crawled out of the passenger door before law enforcement officers arrived. A breathalyzer test at Martin County Jail returned no trace of alcohol, with investigators believing his impairment was drug or medication-related.

Woods refused to submit to a urine test, an offence that carries a separate charge under Florida law. No injuries were reported to Woods or the driver of the other vehicle.

Woods was ‌charged with DUI, property damage and refusal to submit to a lawful test, all misdemeanor charges. Under Florida law, he must remain in jail for at least eight hours before being released on bond.

U.S. President Donald Trump said he had heard about the incident.

"I feel so badly. There was an accident. He's got some difficulty. There was an accident, and that's all I know. A very close friend of mine. He's an amazing person, amazing man," Trump said.

It was the second time Woods has faced DUI charges, having been arrested in 2017 in Jupiter, Florida, later pleading guilty to reckless driving.

Woods was also involved in a serious car crash ‌in February 2021, suffering severe leg fractures.

His injury history spans more than two decades and includes multiple back surgeries, ACL reconstruction, Achilles tendon ruptures and chronic knee issues, all of which have significantly limited his competitive schedule in recent years.

Woods had only just returned to competitive action, representing his Jupiter Links Golf Club in a TGL Finals match on Tuesday, his first appearance since missing the cut at the 2024 British Open.

He had not confirmed whether he planned to compete at this year's Masters, which ‌starts on April 9 in Augusta.

CAREER AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Woods is widely regarded as one of the greatest golfers of all time. He has won 15 major championships, second only to Jack Nicklaus with 18, and 82 PGA Tour events, a record he shares with Sam Snead.

His major titles include five Masters, three ‌U.S. Opens, three British Opens and four PGA Championships.

Woods spent a record 683 weeks as world number one and is the only player to hold all four major titles at the same time, a feat achieved across the 2000-2001 seasons and known as the "Tiger Slam".

He won the 2000 U.S. Open by 15 strokes, the largest winning margin in major championship ‌history.

Woods' 2019 Masters victory, his last major title, is considered one of sport's greatest comebacks after years of debilitating back injuries and personal problems had threatened to end his career.

Orioles, Shane Baz reportedly finalizing 5-year, $68 million extension months after trade

The Baltimore Orioles and right-handed starting pitcher Shane Baz are finalizing a five-year, $68 million extension,ESPN's Jeff Passan reported Friday.

Yahoo Sports

Because Baz, 26, is currently under team control through the 2028 season, the reported contract would buy out his three remaining years of arbitration as well as his first two years as a free agent, according to MLB.com.

The Orioles acquired Bazin a five-player, prospect-filled trade with the Tampa Bay Rays back in December. In return, the Rays received outfielder Slater de Brun, catcher Caden Bodine, right-handed pitcher Michael Forret, outfielder Austin Overn and the No. 33 pick in the 2026 MLB Draft.

Baz was the 12th overall pick in the 2017 draft. The Pittsburgh Pirates selected the righty yet then sent him to the Rays a year later in the trade that landed Pittsburgh Chris Archer. It wasn't long until Baz showcased his potential in Tampa.

But before his career could take off, injury caused it to take a detour. He had a pair of elbow surgeries. Tommy John surgery sidelined him the entire 2023 season and half of the 2024 campaign.

Since, he's stayed away from the injured list. He made 45 of his 54 starts with the Rays over the past two seasons. Although the 4.87 ERA he posted last year was on the higher side, his 176 strikeouts inspired confidence in what he has to offer long term.

He's got quite an arm, as evidenced by the 97 mph average fastball velocity he recorded in his first full season, good for seventh among qualified starters in 2025,according to FanGraphs. His arsenal includes four other pitches, a knuckle curve chief among them. His stuff is enticing, and the Orioles are betting on him being a big part of their future on the mound.

Bringing aboard Baz was just one of the Orioles' splash additions in a head-turning offseasonthat also saw them sign slugging first baseman Pete Alonso to a five-year deal reportedly worth $155 million.

Baltimore's starting rotation got off to an auspicious start on Opening Day, when lefty Trevor Rogers spun seven shutout innings in a 2-1 win over the Minnesota Twins.

The Orioles are hoping outings like that are on the horizon for Baz in Baltimore, too. He's expected to make his O's debut on Sunday against the Twins.

Composer behind 'The Lion King' opening vocals sues comedian for $27M over 'Circle of Life' joke

A South African comedian is being sued for $27 million over a viral joke that mistranslated the iconic "Circle of Life" chant in Disney's "The Lion King."

Lebohang Morake — the Grammy-winning South African composer behind the film's opening Zulu vocals — filed a federal civil complaint in California on March 16 against the comedian, Learnmore Jonasi, alleging that the translation is false and damaging to his life's work.

Jonasi, whose legal name is Learnmore Mwanyenyeka, could not immediately be reached for comment on Friday. No attorney information was listed for him.

In a GoFundMe campaign he launched to cover legal fees, Jonasi called the lawsuit "unjust." By Friday afternoon, the campaign had raised more than $16,000.

Disney did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Last month, Jonasi appeared on theOne54 Africa podcast, where the host sang the chant and asked him what it meant. "You said nothing," Jonasi replied — then sang the chant himself and offered his own translation: "It means, 'Look, there's a lion. Oh, my god.'"

Morake, known professionally as Lebo M, contends in his lawsuit that the chant — "Nants'ingonyama bagithi Baba" — actually means "All hail the king, we all bow in the presence of the king." He filed the suit in the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, where he maintains a residence.

The lawsuit describes the chant as "royal praise poetry" written in isiZulu and isiXhosa. Although it is featured in the "Circle of Life," the lawsuit says it "stands independently as an African vocal proclamation grounded in South African tradition."

The lawsuit acknowledges that "ngonyama" can translate to "lion" in Zulu, but contends in the tradition of Praise Imbongi and royal metaphor, "Ngonyama or Ingonyama" signifies kingship.

The suit calls Jonasi's mistranslation "a sick joke" that is destructive to Morake's artistic work. It also says that the podcast appearance wasn't framed as a stand-up set or comedy special.

"Defendant did not frame this as a joke in delivery," the lawsuit says. "Defendant presented it as factual knowledge with misguided authenticity to increase exposure and mockery of Lebo M's creative masterpiece."

The lawsuit goes on to cite social media comments where people said they believed Jonasi's translation, "with some describing it as having 'ruined their childhood.'"

One54 Africa and its hosts declined to comment on the lawsuit.

According to the suit, Morake messaged Jonasi on Instagram and told him that his comment about the chant "crossed a line" and was an insult to African culture. It says the comedian responded and said that it was "unfortunate that you see it this way," and that he has been performing the joke for eight years.

Jonasi acknowledged in aMarch 13 video statementthat he had a conversation with Morake about the chant.

"This was just a joke, and comedy always has a way of starting a conversation. I told him this. This is now your chance to actually educate people because now people are listening. I was even ready to create a video with him, to be honest," he said. "Personally, I had no idea it had a deeper meaning."

The suit notes that Jonasi recently performed the joke in Los Angeles to a standing ovation. In anInstagram videothe comedian posted on Tuesday, he was served with Morake's lawsuit while performing on stage.

Iran's response to US peace proposal expected Friday, source says

WASHINGTON, March 27 (Reuters) - Iran's response to a U.S. peace proposal aimed at ending the war in ‌the Middle East is expected on Friday, according to ‌a source briefed on the matter.

Reuters

U.S. President Donald Trump and top White House officials have been told via interlocutors to expect Iran's counter-proposal then, the source said.

The war, which began when the U.S. and Israel attacked Iran on February 28, has spread across ‌the Middle East.

Iran had been reviewing a 15-point proposal, sent via Pakistan, that included demands ranging from dismantling Iran's nuclear program to curbing its missile development and effectively handing over control of the Strait of Hormuz, according to sources and reports.

Iran has expressed willingness to talk about certain things in an ‌exchange of messages, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters after a G7 meeting in France on Friday.

"We're waiting for further clarification about who it is that we would be talking to, what we would be talking about, ‌and when will we be talking," Rubio said. "It could happen in any moment. It could happen today. Could happen tomorrow."

An Iranian official told ‌Reuters on Thursday that senior officials had reviewed the proposal and felt it served only U.S. and Israeli interests. But the official said diplomacy had not ended.
