Smith, 30, had played for five different teams during his MLB career when he came to spring training as a non-roster invitee. He left the team for a little over a week at the start of camp when his mother, who was diagnosed with cancer last September, had what he called a "scare." However, he returned and eventually won a roster spot.

"This team is just so awesome,"Smith said. "I'm so blessed because of the love they showed me, the support every day. They're asking about her, asking about her well-being, my well-being, and that's all they really cared about. They didn't care about baseball."

Smith validated his teammates' faith in him by capping off a six-run rally in the ninth with his home run into to the right field seats off Royals closer Carlos Estevez, the major league leader in saves last season with 42.

Although Smith wasn't with his mother when she died in California earlier this month, he said he was looking forward to the Braves' road trip next week to Anaheim, where he will see many of his family members.

Braves designated hitter Dominic Smith rounds the bases after his game-ending grand slam capped a 6-2 comeback win over the Royals at Truist Park.

"You know, I'm trying to hold back tears now," he said. "I feel her every day. I miss her dearly. It's not a moment I don't think about her. And like I said, I'm just so thankful because this team knows what I'm going through. So they really, you know, picked me up the last few weeks."

Michigan's Elite Eight rout of Tennessee added to a men's NCAA tournament record number of blowouts

If you thought there had been a lot of blowouts in the 2026 men'sNCAA tournament, you're onto something.

Yahoo Sports

Michigan's 95-62 win over Tennesseein the Elite Eight on Sunday was the 21st game with a margin of 20 points or more this March Madness. That's a modern tournament record, according to CBS Sports. The previous record had been 19 20-point games in 1999 beforeArizona beat Arkansas by 21 pointsin the Sweet 16 on Thursday.

The number of blowouts jives with how well favorites have done throughout the tournament.Betting favorites went 16-0 in the second dayof the first round, and though No. 1 Florida lost in the second round and No. 2 Houston fell in the Sweet 16, the Final Four will feature at least two No. 1 seeds and the lowest-seeded team is No. 3 Illinois.

The big margins don't automatically mean it's been a bad tournament, either. There have been plenty of dramatic moments, likeOtega Oweh's near-halfcourt shotto force overtime in Kentucky's win over Santa Clara,Trey Kaufman-Renn's tip-inwith less than a second left in Purdue's Sweet 16 win over Texas, andDylan Darling's buzzer-beating layupin St. John's win over Kansas in the second round.

That 1999 tournament was incredibly memorable, too. Gonzaga burst onto the college basketball scene with a second-round win over No. 2 Stanford and a dramatic Sweet 16 win over No. 6 Florida as a No. 10 seed. The Zags run ended in the Elite Eight, when they fell to No. 1 UConn. The Huskies went on to win the national title in a 77-74 victory over Duke despite being a 9.5-point underdog.

Jesse Tyler Fergusonrevealed theModern Familylines that fans quote back to him the most.

Ferguson, 50, caught up exclusively with PEOPLE at the opening night ofGianton Broadwayin New York City on March 23. During the conversation, PEOPLE asked the actor which lines fromModern Family, which ran from 2009 to 2020 on ABC, he hears most often while out and about.

"Shame," Ferguson told PEOPLE, referring to the word his character, Mitchell Pritchett, would often yell.

"People are always saying 'shame' to my face," he continued.

"And also, 'Where's Lily?' " he added, a nod to him and his onscreen husband Cam Tucker, (played byEric Stonestreet, 54) were constantly losing track of their young daughter, Lily.

Ferguson went on to share what date nights with his real-life spouse, producer and actorJustin Mikita, 40, look like these days.

"Right now, they look very far and few in between," Ferguson said. "We don't have a lot of them because we've been both so busy … Usually, it ends up just like it's like a dinner out."

The actor also told PEOPLE about his latest project, the playTRU, in which he plays famed authorTruman Capote.

"I'm doing this play very immersively for 99 people a night in a brownstone … a Gilded Age brownstone on the Upper East Side," he explained.

"So that alone really intrigued me — to be able to do a play really intimately. Last summer I didShakespeare in the Parkfor 2,000 people a night, so to do something for 99 people a night just feels so different and so scary," he continued.

Ferguson added, "And I'm always looking for things that scare me and challenge me. And then to do it intimately and then also let it be Truman Capote, which is in itself such a hard thing to tackle, it's been a good thing for me, because I rarely get scared now."

"I've done things that have really scared me and they always pay off in dividends, so I'm always looking for the next thing that scares me and this was certainly it," he said.

The actor also spoke to PEOPLE about his podcast,Dinner's on Me with Jesse Tyler Ferguson,in which he goes out to eat with his guests at dining spots across New York City and Los Angeles and interviews them over a meal.

"I've been trying to get her on for literally years. I have Michael Kors on tomorrow, which I'm so excited about.Darren Criss, I hadShoshana Bean, who's a very dear friend of mine …Jenna Fischer'scoming on soon when I go back to L.A.," he said.

"I get great people. I'm very lucky," he added.

NEED TO KNOW

  • He played 23 hits from throughout his career, including some Beatles classics

  • "It's great to be at these little gigs," he told the crowd at his show on Friday, March 27

Paul McCartneybrought the energy to Los Angeles.

"Welcome to Hollywood! We're gonna have some fun!" proclaimed the legendary singer as he took the stage on Friday, March 27, as he kicked off a two-night run at the Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles, playing 23 beloved hits from throughout his career in small, intimate shows that harked back toThe Beatles' early days playing tiny clubs in Liverpool, England.

"It's great to be at these little gigs — I mean, it's not that little," McCartney, 83, told the enthusiastic crowd, many of whom were young enough to have parents who were born well after his eras with the Fab Four and his subsequent band Wings were long over.

He nostalgically recalled the 1,200-person-capacity club's earlier incarnation as the Hollywood Music Box Theatre "a hundred years ago" before it was renamed in honor ofJane Fonda's father, actorHenry Fonda.

The crowd on the floor and in the second-floor balcony during the ultra-exclusive show comprised just the tiniest fraction of the mass audiences McCartney typically entertains in his stadium and arena concerts.

"It's very lovely," he said. "It's good to see the whites of your eyes."

Although the stripped-down shows were ostensibly timed to promote McCartney's latest effort,The Boys of Dungeon Lane— his 19th solo studio album and first in six years, out March 29 — he admitted to the Friday audience that they wouldn't be hearing his freshly dropped single "Days We Left Behind" or other music from the project for a simple reason: He and the band were still "in the process of learning it… But I'm glad you love it, yeah."

Instead, the spotlight was on his beloved back catalogue spanning six decades, including a plethora of Beatles classics, including "Help!," "Got to Get You into My Life," "Getting Better," "I've Just Seen a Face," "Love Me Do," "Lady Madonna," "Let It Be," Hey Jude," "Ob-La-Di, Ob-La-Da," "Get Back," "Golden Slumber," "Carry That Weight," "The End" and especially tender renditions of his late bandmateJohn Lennon's posthumously produced and released ballad "Now and Then" ("Thank you, John, for writing that," he offered), as well as the longtime McCartney signature "Blackbird."

Added into the mix were a slew of favorites from McCartney's Wings era ("Coming Up," "Let 'Em In," "Nineteen Hundred and Eighty-Five" and "Jet") and solo period ("Every Night," "Flaming Pie" and "My Valentine, the latter dedicated to his wife,Nancy Shevell, who was in the theater).

McCartney kept much of the focus on performing and kept the stage patter to a minimum, alternating between playing the grand piano and his long-familiar Höfner bass, known to fans as the "Beatle Bass."

But he did share a few anecdotes with the audience, including recalling The Beatles' first trip to America.

"We hadn't really seen much, and we certainly hadn't seen America, so it was pretty amazing," he said. "What we used to notice was that all the guys in the audience were looking at the chords you were playing, and they'd study it… and we kind of liked that. And all the girls weren't."

The quip prompted Beatlemania-esque screams from the crowd, which tickled McCartney. "Yeah, the girls were screaming. Give us a Beatles scream!" His encouragement prompted an even louder outpouring of appreciative shrieks.

He also gave a shout-out to the celebrity and VIP guests seated in the second level.

"Hello, people upstairs! The posh seats!" he greeted notables includingDustin Hoffmanand documentarian Morgan Neville, who helmed the recently released McCartney docMan on the Run. "What a story!" McCartney said cheekily, adding, "Well done, Morgan. You've done a good film."
