UK police arrest 2 in connection with weekend arson attack on synagogue

LONDON (AP) — British police have arrested two teenagers in connection with a weekend arson attack on a synagogue in northwest London, as Jewish leaders express concern about a wave of incidents targeting their community.

Associated Press

Deputy Commissioner Matt Jukes of London’s Metropolitan Police Service on Monday said officers arrested two young men, aged 19 and 17, overnight in relation to the attack on the Kenton United Synagogue in the borough of Harrow. The department has made 15 arrests related to six attacks on Jewish targets and aPersian-language media organizationcritical of Iran's government that occurred over the past few weeks, he said in an interview with the BBC.

One “serious line of inquiry” is that Iran is hiring local criminals to carry out these attacks amid tensions in the Middle East, including the U.S.-Israeli war against the Islamic Republic, Jukes said.

“We’ve seen a pattern with other actors of thugs for hire, people taking cash that looks like quick and easy money,” Jukes said. “This is part of the modern hybrid war fought by proxies.”

In the most recent incident, a bottle containing a flammable liquid was thrown through the window of the Harrow synagogue on Saturday night, causing smoke damage, police said.

Counterterrorism police are investigating the series of incidents, which began on March 23 when an arson attack destroyedfour ambulancesowned by a Jewish charity that serves people of all faiths in north London.

Police on Friday closed Kensington Gardens, a central London park visited by thousands of tourists and local residents every day, after a group that Israel has linked to Iran posted a video claimingIsrael’s nearby London embassywas going to be attacked with drones carrying dangerous substances.

Police said the embassy was not attacked, but the force shut the park as officers examined discarded items including two jars containing powder. Police said nothing harmful was found.

No one has been injured in the incidents.

Chief Rabbi Ephraim Mirvis said on Sunday that “a sustained campaign of violence and intimidation against the Jewish community of the UK is gathering momentum."

“Thank God, no lives have been lost, but we cannot, and must not, wait for that to change before we understand just how dangerous this moment is for all of our society,” he said on X.

Deputy Assistant Commissioner Vicki Evans on Sunday said police are aware that a group calling itself Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia had claimed responsibility for most of the attacks in Britain. The same group has claimed responsibility for incidents in recent months at places of worship, business and financial institutions across Europe, all of which appear to be linked to Jewish or Israeli interests, she said.

Israel’s government has described Harakat Ashab al-Yamin al-Islamia, whose name means the Islamic Movement of the Companions of the Right, as a recently founded group with suspected links to “an Iranian proxy.”

“I want to be clear, irrespective of the motivation of this group, to those facilitating on their behalf and those committing the acts – we will not tolerate activity which seeks to intimidate or frighten our communities. You will not succeed in creating division and hate,” Evans said.

The U.K. has accused Iran of using criminal proxies to conduct attacks on European soil targetingopposition media outletsand the Jewish community. Britain’s MI5 domestic intelligence service says that more than 20 “potentially lethal” Iran-backed plots were disrupted in the year to October.

US military strike on alleged drug boat kills 3 in Caribbean Sea

WASHINGTON (AP) — The U.S. military said it launched another strike on a boat accused of ferrying drugs in the Caribbean Sea, killing three people Sunday.

Associated Press

The Trump administration's campaign of blowing up alleged drug-trafficking vessels in Latin American waters haspersisted since early Septemberand killed at least 181 people in total. Other strikes have taken placein the eastern Pacific Ocean.

Despitethe Iran war, the series ofstrikes have ramped up againin the past week or so, showing that the administration's aggressive measures to stop what it calls “narcoterrorism” in the Western Hemisphere are not letting up. The military has not provided evidence that any of the vessels were carrying drugs.

The attacks began as the U.S. built up its largest military presence in the region in generations and came months ahead of the raid in January thatcaptured then-Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. He was brought to New York toface drug trafficking chargesand has pleaded not guilty.

In the latest attack Sunday, U.S. Southern Command repeated previous statements by saying it had targeted the alleged drug traffickers along known smuggling routes. It posted a video on X showing a boat moving along the water before a massive explosion engulfs the vessel in flames.

President Donald Trump has said the U.S. is in “armed conflict” with cartels in Latin America and hasjustified the attacksas a necessary escalation to stem the flow of drugs into the United States and fatal overdoses claiming American lives. But his administration has offered little evidence to support its claims of killing “narcoterrorists.”

Critics, meanwhile, havequestioned the overall legalityof the boat strikes.

Haiti hunger crisis deepens as almost 6 million face acute food insecurity

PORT-AU-PRINCE, April 16 (Reuters) - Nearly 6 million people in Haiti are expected to face acute food insecurity in the coming ‌months, underscoring how gang violence, mass displacement and economic strain are ‌keeping the Caribbean nation in the grip of a deepening humanitarian crisis, according to a new assessment published on Thursday.

Haiti conflict drives thousands toward famine

About 5.8 million Haitians - more than half the population - are facing acute food insecurity, the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) said, with more than 1.8 million of them in the emergency phase ‌and in urgent need of food assistance.

The crisis has been fueled by worsening insecurity, economic shocks and repeated disruption to markets and farming, the report said. Armed groups have expanded their control in parts of the country, while more than 1.4 million people have been displaced, straining food supplies and pushing vulnerable households deeper into hunger.

The latest IPC projection is ‌slightly below an earlier estimate of 5.91 million people facing acute food insecurity, and the number in the emergency category has also edged lower, improvements that agencies have linked in part to food assistance, easing inflation and better harvest conditions in some areas.

The World Food Programme (WFP) has ‌said sustained food aid helped about 200,000 Haitians move out of emergency levels of hunger since last year, yet aid groups said some recent gains were fragile.

"Fighting ‌hunger is essential to restoring stability in Haiti. We cannot build peace if families cannot feed their children," WFP Haiti Country Director Wanja Kaaria said in a statement.

Humanitarian agencies warned conditions could deteriorate again without ‌more support, citing the spike in global fuel prices caused by the Iran war which has further strained transportation and agricultural production costs.

Sabres ending their NHL-record playoff drought inspires joy beyond Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — WhenTaylor Hall signedwith the Sabres several years ago, the 2018 MVP summed up a belief shared by many around the NHL by saying the league is better when Buffalo is competitive.

Hockey Sabres Drought Over

It has been a long time since that was the case.

After numerous rebuilds and coaching and front office changes, the Sabres are back in the playoffs for the first time since 2011 after snapping the NHL’slongest postseason drought at 14 years. As division champions for the first time since '07, Buffalo will open at home against Boston this weekend.

Hall’s belief in Buffalo hasn’t changed, even though his tenure there lasted just 37 games.

“If you’re a sports fan, you have a bit of a soft spot for Buffalo,” said Hall, who is now with Carolina. “It’s nice to see that they’ve done it the right way this year. They play hard. They play fast. They’ve committed to playing well on both sides of the puck, and that’s the recipe. They’re going to be a tough out."

Joy for former teammates

Hall isn’t the only ex-Sabres player to take notice and express a sense of joy over this long-awaited revival.

Casey Mittlestadt might have mixed emotions with his Bruins preparing to face the Sabres in the first round. That doesn't take away the happiness he feels for Sabres captain Rasmus Dahlin and leading scorer Tage Thompson, with whom he broke into the league with in 2018.

“Very happy for those guys,” said Mittelstadt, who was picked eighth by Buffalo in 2017. “I have so many friends there and am really close with the staff, spent a lot of time there. ... I would be lying if I said I don’t cheer for them a bit. Good friends, good people and I think they deserve it.”

Fellow forward Zemgus Girgensons endured the brunt of the drought spending a decade in Buffalo before signing with Tampa Bay as a free agent two years ago. Though the drought outlasted him, Girgensons is impressed by his former team's transformation.

"There’s a lot of talent on that team and they’re doing a good job so far," Girgensons said. “It’s just the process of it. You can see the guys have matured a lot. It’s just the way they play. They’ve been playing good hockey, and it’s fun to watch.”

Joy for the city of Buffalo

Defenseman Tyler Myers suited up for Buffalo's most recent playoff series in 2010 and and he shares Hall's soft spot for the city.

“It’s my first team in the NHL, (and) I had some success there early on with the group we had,” said Myers, now with Dallas. “I’m happy to see the city and the team doing well. I obviously don’t feel that way if we’re ever up against them. But they’ve had a long road. Certainly in a way, I’m happy for them.”

Rasmus Ristolainen, whose 820 regular season games are the most of any active NHL player without a postseason appearance, is finallyin with Philadelphiaand feels a kinship with Sabres fans who have waited even longer than he has for this opportunity.

“The fans are die hard and love the team, as they do here, as well. Good for them,” he said

Buffalo native Patrick Kane is a three-time Stanley Cup champion from his time with the Blackhawks . During a recent visit with Detroit, he said he could feel the buzz of the fanbase. It reminded him a bit of football in nearby Orchard Park.

“The building gets wild,” Kane said. “You could see the crowd get into it. I kind of compare it to the Bills a little bit, too. The Bills are good, it’s good for the city. Same thing with the Sabres.”

Joy for the sport of hockey

It's not just that the Sabres got into the playoffs, it's how far they've come in a short while. Buffalo opened this season 11-14-4 before riding a 39-9-4 run to finish atop the Atlantic Division.

“I don’t know if anybody could have predicted the turnaround from last year to this year as quickly,” Commissioner Gary Bettman said. “It’s incredible.”

Also incredible is how winning has re-energized a fanbase. After selling out just four games in 2024-25, the Sabres have enjoyed 22 sellouts this season, including 17 in a row leading into the regular-season finale Wednesday night.

“I always knew that Buffalo was a great market, a great hockey market, and what demonstrates that is while there was frustration that built over time, it has turned around on a dime, which means the fans are back,” Bettman said. “Their enthusiasm is back. It’s like what’s happened has turned the page.”

Whyno reported from New York.

Severe Weather Outbreak Leaves Damage Across Plains, Midwest

It's been a siege of severe weather this week, and another rash of storms fired up Friday in some of the same areas hit earlier. Our latest forecastshows where tornadoes, hail and flooding rain could happen again.

(06:42 p.m. EDT) Tornado Safety Tips

From content writer Toby Adeyemi

The National Weather Service has these following safety tips during a tornado.

Before The Storm:

Know where to take shelter at home, work, school, and in your car before a tornado strikes.

Plan, prepare, and practice your tornado response — flying debris causes most deaths and injuries.

Avoid windows at all costs — exploding glass can injure or kill.

At Home:

Go to the interior part of a basement, away from windows and exterior walls.

If no basement, go to an inside room without windows on the lowest floor — center hallway, bathroom, or closet.

Get under something sturdy like a heavy table or workbench for added protection.

Cover your body with a blanket, sleeping bag, or mattress and protect your head with your hands.

Avoid sheltering under heavy objects like pianos or refrigerators that could fall through the floor.

Mobile Homes:

Never stay in a mobile home manufactured before 1976 during a tornado, they're extremely vulnerable.

Go to a nearby building with a basement if possible.

If no shelter is available, lie flat in the nearest ditch, ravine, or culvert and shield your head with your hands.

Remember: There's no completely safe place during a tornado, but some locations are much safer than others.

(06:07 p.m. EDT) Increasing Tornado Threat For Milwaukee

From senior meteorologist Jonathan Belles:

A couple of solitary supercells are marching through northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin and conditions suggest an increasing tornado and very large hail threat from Milwaukee to Waukegan, Illinois, over the next couple of hours. These storms ahead of the squall line are the most likely storms to produce a strong tornado or two today if they can remain isolated from other storms and ahead of the squall line.

(05:45 p.m. EDT) DHS Flood Safety Tips

From content writer Toby Adeyemi

TheWisconsin Department of Health Serviceshas shared some flood safety tips everyone needs to see.

If Water Is Rising:

Get out immediately and move to higher ground — don't wait.

Lock doors, turn off utilities at main switches before evacuating.

Disconnect appliances, but never touch electrical equipment while wet or standing in water.

Don't walk through moving water — even a few inches can knock you down.

Listen to public safety officials and follow evacuation orders.

After The Flood:

Only return home when authorities confirm it's safe.

Avoid driving or walking through flooded areas — roads may be eroded or damaged.

Never wade, swim, or bathe in floodwater — it contains bacteria, chemicals, and debris.

Use extreme caution entering buildings — check for hidden structural damage first.

Food Safety:

When in doubt, throw it out — don't rely on appearance, taste, or smell.

Toss perishable food after four hours without power or refrigeration.

Refreeze thawed food only if it still has ice crystals or is at 40°F or below.

Throw out any food touched by floodwater, even in sealed containers.

(05:15 p.m. EDT) Some Weather Words To Know Today

From senior meteorologist Jonathan Belles:

Tornado Watch:The atmosphere is primed to produce tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail. If in one of these watches, you should be ready to move to your storm shelter with your family. This watch is issued by the Storm Prediction Center

Quasi-Linear Convective System (or QLCS):This is a fancy name for squall lines, but they can be producers of tornadoes alongside damaging winds. Meteorologists look for little kinks on these lines for tornadoes on radar.

Moderate Risk:This is the threat level that exists today in parts of Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri. This is the second-highest threat level issued by the Storm Prediction Center and is issued a handful of times each year around the country. This risk area can be issued for damaging winds, hail or tornadoes, or a combination of the three. Today, it was issued for the combination of damaging winds and hail. You should have your weather plan in mind throughout your day in case damaging weather comes your way.

Severe thunderstorm:A storm that is producing a tornado, wind gusts of at least 60 mph or hail of at least one inch in diameter.

Particularly Dangerous Situation (or PDS):This tag is affixed on watches or warnings issued by the National Weather Service when there is a distinct threat to life or property that is higher than a regular watch or warning might suggest. These storms often have confirmed threats like tornadoes or very strong winds.

(04:55 p.m. EDT) Tornado With A ‘Particularly Dangerous Situation’ Tag On The Ground In Wisconsin

From meteorologistSara Tonksand meteorologistJennifer Gray:

A confirmed tornado with a “particularly dangerous situation” (PDS) tag is on the ground in Wisconsin, according to the La Crosse National Weather Service office. The tornado is large and extremely dangerous, and the damage threat is considerable.

The PDS tag is used in warnings for radar-confirmed or spotter-confirmed tornadoes that are likely to be strong. These particular warnings are rare and an elevated version of a tornado warning that is meant to suggest an unusually high threat of damage and loss of life exists for a particular storm.

(MORE:All Tornado Warnings Should Be Taken Seriously, But They Aren't All The Same. Here Are The Different Types)

(04:43 p.m. EDT) Today’s Biggest Threat Isn’t Tornadoes

From senior meteorologist Jonathan Belles:

You may already know that today’s severe thunderstorm threat is toward the upper end of the scale – a 4 out of 5 risk, or a moderate risk per the Storm Prediction Center – but it is for damaging winds and very large hail in the Central Plains rather than for tornadoes. A well-developed line of thunderstorms is now sweeping eastward through the country’s mid-section. Some wind gusts in eastern Kansas or western Missouri could reach 85 mph through mid to late evening.

The threat for tornadoes is located over eastern Iowa, northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin through mid-evening.

(04:39 p.m. EDT) Tornado Watch In Illinois And Missouri

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch in Illinois and Missouri thru 11pm CDT.

That includes Chicago, St. Louis, Columbia and Springfield.

The Dodgers shattered MLB's spending record at $515 million in 2025, 7 times the lowest payroll

NEW YORK (AP) — The Dodgers shattered Major League Baseball's spending record with a combined $515 million in payroll and luxury tax last year en route to theirsecond straight World Series title, according to final figures compiled by the commissioner's office, and Los Angeles is projected for the highest total again in 2026.

Rangers Dodgers Baseball

Los Angeles' 2025 spending included records for payroll at $345.3 million and tax of $169.4 million for a total of $514.6 million. Despite several contracts discounted to reflect deferred payments, the Dodgers' total was seven times the $68.7 million payroll of the Miami Marlins, the lowest-spending team, and more than the payrolls of the bottom six clubs combined.

Spending by the Dodgers last year topped theprevious high of $430.4 million by the 2024 New York Mets— and Los Angeles' total didn't include the$6.5 million signing bonus given pitcher Roki Sasakias part of a minor league contract.

The Mets and Dodgers combined to spend $948.3 million. The ratio of the five highest spenders to the five lowest increased from 3.6 in 2021 to a record-high 4.7 last year.

The Dodgers in 2025 ended the Mets' three-year streak as the top payroll, boosted by $8.5 million in earned bonuses by retiring ace Clayton Kershaw.

Los Angeles' total would have been about $71 million higher but for the use of deferred money for seven players that resulted in discounting for their payroll calculations.Shohei Ohtani counts at $28.2 millionbecause $68 million of his $70 million salary last year isn't due until 2035.

The Mets finished second in payroll at $342.1 million and with tax had a total spend of $433.7 million.

In the first five seasons after owner Steve Cohen bought the team, the Mets spent $1.44 billion without winning a title: $1.11 billion in payroll and $320 million in tax.

Both the Mets and Dodgers exceeded the previous record-high payrollset by the 2024 Mets at $333.3 million.

Lois Angeles is projected as of MLB’s opening-day figures to lead in 2026 spending with a $323.3 million payroll for its 40-man roster and a $163.7 million tax for a $487.1 million total. The Mets began with a record payroll at $358.4 million and have a projected tax of $124.1 million for a $482.5 million spend.

Cleveland has the lowest opening day 40-man payroll this year at $75.5 million.

Total spending, based on regular payrolls, rose 3.1% to $5.32 billion last year from $5.16 billion in 2024 and has increased 31.3% in four seasons under the current labor contract from $4.05 billion in 2021.

Those figures do not include the $50 million annual pre-arbitration bonus pool that began in the 2022 collective bargaining agreement or allocations for benefits, which are included in MLB's luxury tax payrolls.

Among luxury tax payrolls, eight teams began 2026 over the $244 million tax threshold. The Dodgers ($415.2 million), Mets ($379.2 million) and New York Yankees ($339.6 million) were followed by Toronto ($319.5 million), Philadelphia ($315.2 million), Boston ($263.7 million), San Diego ($260.1 million) and Atlanta ($247.9 million).

The Chicago Cubs started $25,000 under and Detroit $2.5 million below. Payrolls increase and decrease during the season due to trades and roster moves.

The Yankees finished 2025 with the third-highest regular payroll at $301.5 million, followed by Philadelphia ($291.9 million), AL champion Toronto ($253.1 million), Houston ($236.4 million) and Texas ($229.9 million).

Four of the top five spenders reached the playoffs, except the Mets, along with teams whose payrolls ranked ninth, 10th, 12th, 15th, 17th, 22nd, 23rd and 25th.

The Dodgers boosted payroll the most in 2025 at $74.4 million. Other teams with big 2025 increases were Detroit ($61.9 million), Baltimore ($60.2 million to $165.6 million), San Diego ($45.6 million to $217.6 million), Philadelphia ($42.8 million) and Toronto ($34.7 million).

Fifteen teams cut payroll from 2024 to 2025, led by the Chicago White Sox (by $66.1 million to $87.9 million), St. Louis ($39.3 million to $139.1 million), Miami ($29.4 million to $68.8 million) and San Francisco (by $28 million to $182.9 million). The Cardinals have further slashed payroll to $102.3 million on opening day this year, and that includes about $47.4 million attributable to trades involving three players no longer with the Cardinals: Nolan Arenado, Sonny Gray and Willson Contreras.

The Yankees cut payroll by $9.4 million from 2024 to 2025 and have raised it to $302.8 million this year.

Eleven teams topped $200 million in 2025,matching the record set in 2023. Five teams were below $100 million, one more than therecord-low in 2024.

Regular payrolls for last year are based on 2025 salaries, earned bonuses and prorated shares of signing bonuses and non-cash compensation for 40-man rosters. Deferred salaries and bonus payments are discounted to present-day values, and termination pay, option buyouts and cash transactions among clubs are accounted for.

MLB calculated the average salary as of Aug. 31, the last day before active rosters expanded to 26, at $4,611,595. The players' association, using a slightly different methodology, arrived at$4,721,393,

Luxury taxis based on payrolls with average annual values that include benefits and thepre-arbitration bonus pool. The players' association doesn't think tax payments should be used in measuring disparity because half the tax money goes to a commissioner’s discretionary fund distributed among teams eligible to receive revenue-sharing money which have grown their non-media local revenue.
