NBA Cup 2025: Lakers pull away from Clippers to clinch knockout spot as Magic, Wizards roll to blowout wins

With only one week of NBA Cup action left, the league had six teams in action Tuesday, all with significant ramifications for group play. Here's how the night shook out:

Lakers 135, Clippers 118

It took a huge night from Luka Dončić, but the Los Angeles Lakers have clinched a spot in the knockout round of the NBA Cup.

The Lakers pulled away from the Los Angeles Clippers to grab a 135-118 win to wrap up the three-game NBA Cup slate on Tuesday night at Crypto.com Arena. Dončić finished just shy of a 40-point triple-double in the win.

The Lakers now sit at a perfect 3-0 in group play and have secured a spot in the knockout round. They now officially have a shot to win what would be a second NBA Cup in the first three years of the in-season tournament's existence.

Though the Clippers looked incredibly solid in the first half, shooting 50% from behind the arc led by 16 points from James Harden, it was Dončić who kept the Lakers in it. He dropped 32 points in the first two quarters, 24 of which came in the opening minutes, to help power the Lakers to a three-point lead at the break. Dončić shot 9-of-14 from the field and drained five 3-pointers in the opening period, too.

The Clippers never went away, but just couldn't quite keep pace with the Lakers in the second half. They rallied back with a big 13-2 run in the third quarter to jump back out in front after a small Lakers burst, but the Lakers still took a five-point lead into the fourth quarter.

The Lakers then quickly handled business in the final period. They opened the quarter on a 17-7 tear to jump out to a double digit lead, and then never looked back.

Things escalated briefly in the fourth quarter, however. Kris Dunn boxed Dončić out hard late in the fourth quarter, and Dončić immediately jumped up and confronted him under the rim. Dunn, wasting little time, then grabbed the ball and shoved it into Dončić's chest hard. While Dončić didn't retaliate — he stumbled back and smirked — Jaxson Hayes came flying in and shoved Dunn in the back.

That sparked a small altercation that took a bit to calm down. In the end, Hayes was hit with a technical foul for shoving Dunn in the back. Dunn was assessed two technical fouls and was ejected.

Dončić had 43 points with 13 assists and 9 rebounds in the win to lead the Lakers. He shot 7-of-12 from behind the arc, too. Austin Reaves added 31 points and nine rebounds.

LeBron James, who made just his third start this season after dealing with sciatica, easily had his best game of the year despite being held scoreless in the first quarter. James had 25 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists and shot 9-of-15 from the field. The win, the Lakers' fifth in a row, pushed them to 13-4 on the year.

James Harden led the Clippers with 29 points and nine assists. Dunn had 19 points when he was ejected. The Clippers have now lost five of their last six, and sit at just 5-13 this fall. They were 2-0 in NBA Cup play entering Tuesday's game, however, and are still undoubtedly in the hunt for a spot in the knockout round.

The Lakers will wrap up the group stage on Friday against the Dallas Mavericks. A win there will mean that they get to host a quarterfinal game in the knockout stage with a trip to Las Vegas on the line.

Magic 144, Sixers 103

The Philadelphia 76ers have been one of the NBA's most up-and-down teams so far this season. On Tuesday, they were mostly down.

Behind 31 points off the bench from Anthony Black, the Magic steamrolled Philly to take control of East Group B at 3-0 with a +61 point differential. The loss officially eliminated the Sixers from NBA Cup contention at 0-3.

The total was a season high in scoring for the Magic. Their 82 points off the bench was the most by any team this year.

The Sixers entered the game significantly short-handed, with Joel Embiid (knee), Paul George (ankle), Kelly Oubre (knee) and VJ Edgecombe (calf) all out for the game, leaving Tyrese Maxey as the team's only consistent offensive engine. He wasn't nearly what they need him to be, with 20 points on 7-of-15 shooting in 32 minutes.

Philadelphia kept the game close for a quarter, but the Magic pulled away throughout the second quarter and just kept punching from there. By halftime, they were up 26 points. By the end of the third quarter, they were up 38 points.

Black led the team in scoring, and eight other players hit double figures in points. Jalen Suggs also had 11 assists, but was ejected in the second quarter after a confrontation got physical.

With the Magic now 3-0, the fate of Group B will hinge on their game against the 2-0 Detroit Pistons on Friday. The Pistons have another Cup game scheduled Wednesday against the Boston Celtics.

Wizards 132, Hawks 113

The Washington Wizards' losing skid is over.

The Wizards fended off elimination from the NBA Cup on Tuesday night while picking up their second win of the season. Washington cruised to a stunning blowout win over the Atlanta Hawks at Capital One Arena. That marked the franchise's first win in more than a month, and their first home win since April.

The Wizards erupted out of the gate and never looked back. They opened the game on an 18-2 run, and then outscored the Hawks 45-23 in the first period to take a huge lead.

The Wizards went a perfect 8 of 8 from behind the arc in the first 12 minutes thanks to four 3-pointers from both CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. That was the longest streak of made 3-pointers to start a game in Wizards franchise history, and the longest streak anywhere in the league since 2023.

McCollum entered halftime with 27 points after making three more from behind the arc, which helped carry them to a 20-point lead at the break. From there, the rest was easy. The Wizards pushed their lead to 33 points at the end of the third, and then rolled to the 19-point win.

Kristaps Porzingis led the Hawks with 22 points and eight rebounds, and Onyeka Okongwu had 20 points off the bench. The Hawks now sit at 11-8 on the season, and just 1-2 in NBA Cup play — though they still hold quite an advantage over the Wizards in point differential. They had won seven of their past nine entering Tuesday's loss.

McCollum finished with 46 points, including 10 triples, in the win. Alex Sarr added 27 points and 11 rebounds, and Kispert had 19 points. He left the game early due to an apparent thumb injury, though specifics aren't yet known.

The Wizards now hold a 2-15 record, and are also 1-2 in NBA Cup play. While they are one of the worst teams in the league this fall, and they have an uphill battle ahead of them if they're going to rally to make what would be their first postseason appearance since 2021, they've not been eliminated from the NBA Cup just yet.

"Cowell continued, You ask yourself that question: 'Could I have done anything more? What would've happened to Liam if he hadn't been in the band?' Simu Liu Says the 'Backslide' of Asian Representation in Hollywood Is 'F—ing Appalling': 'Studios Think We Are Risky'

Simu Liu took toThreadson Sunday to post a fiery message about the "backslide" of Asian representation in Hollywood. In the post, he included social media reports about Asian actors struggling to find fulfilling roles.

"Put some Asians in literally anything right now," he wrote. "The amount of backslide in our representation onscreen is fucking appalling. Studios think we are risky."

More from Variety

Despite this perceived risk, Liu listed several films starring Asian actors that were critical successes, including "Minari," "Farewell," "Past Lives," "Everything Everywhere All At Once," "Crazy Rich Asians" and his Marvel tentpole "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings."

He added, "Every single one a financial success. No Asian actor has ever lost a studio even close to 100 million dollars but a white dude will lose 200 million TWICE and roll right into the next tentpole lead. We're fighting a deeply prejudiced system. And most days it SUCKS."

Liu has a history of being vocal on social media, especially when it comes to speaking out against right-leaning politics. HetoldVarietyin a recent interview that he "should probably be more scared" of backlash, but his appetite to speak his mind and stand up for what he believes often overcomes his fears.

"I just feel like there's something about the internet that makes people just crazy," Liu said. "There's something about the publicness of it and where people love being the guy to put someone else down [or] put an entire group of people down. I am so not for that energy."

Australian teenagers ask High Court to block social media ban

SYDNEY (Reuters) -A constitutional challenge against Australia's social media ban on children younger than 16 has been filed in the nation's highest court, two weeks before the world-first law is set to take effect.

A campaign group called the Digital Freedom Project said ‌on Wednesday it launched proceedings in the High Court of Australia in a bid to block the law, with two 15-year-‌olds, Noah Jones and Macy Neyland, as plaintiffs in the case.

More than one million accounts held by teenagers under 16 are set to be deactivated in Australia when the ban on platforms including YouTube, TikTok, Snapchat and Meta's Facebook and Instagram starts on December 10.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Digital Freedom Project said the ban "robs" young Australians ‌of their freedom of political communication, an implied right in the constitution. Australia does not have an express right to free speech.

"The legislation is grossly excessive,‍" the statement said.

Neyland said the law would ban young people from expressing their views online.

"Young people like me are the voters of tomorrow ... we shouldn't be silenced. It's like Orwell's book 1984, and that scares me," she said.

The Digital Freedom Project's president is John Ruddick,‌ a member of the Libertarian Party in the New South Wales state Parliament.

After news of the legal challenge broke, Communications Minister Anika Wells told Parliament the centre-left government, led by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, would not be intimidated by threats and legal challenges.

"Despite the fact that we are receiving threats and legal challenges by people with ulterior motives, the Albanese Labor government remains steadfastly on the side of parents, and not of platforms," Wells said.

Australian media has reported that YouTube also threatened to launch a High Court challenge on the grounds the ban burdened political communication.

Governments and tech firms around the world are closely watching Australia's effort to implement the ban, one of the most comprehensive efforts to police minors' social media access.

The ‍ban was passed into law in November 2024 and is supported by the majority of Australians, according to opinion polling.

The government said research showed the over-use of social media was harming young teens, including causing misinformation, enabling bullying and harmful depictions of body image.

Companies that fail to comply with the ban could face penalties of up to ‌A$49.5 million ($32.22 million).

What to know about French ex-President Sarkozy's latest legal matters

PARIS (AP) — Nicolas Sarkozy risks another blow to his legacy and reputation when France's highest court rules Wednesday on the former president's conviction forillegal campaign financingof his reelection bid in 2012.

The Court of Cassation will decide whether to uphold or overturn Sarkozy's conviction to a year in prison, half of it suspended, for fraudulently overspending on the failed campaign.

The decision comes just two weeks after hisrelease from prisonpending an appeal in another campaign financing case. Sarkozy, 70, was incarcerated for 20 days in Paris' La Santé prison, after judges convicted him of scheming to get secret financing from Libya in his winning campaign for the French presidency in 2007. He has denied any wrongdoing.

Here's what to know about Wednesday's decision and other legal proceedings involving Sarkozy.

Ruling's meaning

A Paris court in 2021 and an appeals court in 2024 convicted Sarkozy of illegal campaign financing in 2012. He's accused of having spent almost twice the maximum legal amount of 22.5 million euros ($25.5 million) on the reelection bid that he lost to François Hollande, a socialist.

If the Court of Cassation upholds the guilty verdict, his conviction would be considered definitive by French law, with no further appeal possible.

France's top court isn't reexamining the entire case, but instead is verifying that the law and proceedings' rules were properly applied. If not, it can overturn the verdict and order a new trial.

If the conviction is confirmed, the sentence would take effect.

The appeals court asked for six months of imprisonment to be served at home, which can be monitored with an electronic bracelet or other requirements set by a judge.

Sarkozy's appeal trial in the Libya case is scheduled to run from March 16 to June 3.

In September, a Paris court found him guilty of criminal association in a plot from 2005 to 2007, when he served as interior minister, to finance his winning presidential campaign with funds from Libya in exchange for diplomatic favors. It sentenced him to five years in prison.

Sarkozy was cleared of three other charges, including passive corruption, illegal campaign financing and concealing the embezzlement of public funds.

The court found that two of Sarkozy's closest associates held secret meetings in 2005 with Abdullah al-Senoussi, the brother-in-law and intelligence chief of longtime Libyan ruler Moammar Gadhafi.

Gadhafi was toppled and killed in an uprising in 2011, ending his four-decade rule of the North African country. Al-Senoussi is considered the mastermind of attacks on a Pan Am jumbo jet over Lockerbie, Scotland, in 1988 and a French airliner over Niger the following year — causing hundreds of deaths. In 2003, Libya took responsibility for both plane bombings.

Prison memoir

Sarkozy is publishing a book on Dec. 10 about his recent time behind bars, titled "Diary of a Prisoner."

He described prison as "a nightmare."

"I had never imagined I would experience prison at 70. This ordeal was imposed on me, and I lived through it. It's hard, very hard," Sarkozy said during a court hearing on his release.

In a post on X, he said that "the noise is, unfortunately, constant" and that "the inner life of man becomes stronger in prison."

Witness tampering

French investigative judgesfiled preliminary chargesin 2023 against Sarkozy for his alleged involvement in a possible attempt to clear him in the Libya financing case by pressuring a witness.

In 2016, French-Lebanese businessman Ziad Takieddine said that he had delivered suitcases filled with cash from Tripoli to France's Interior Ministry under Sarkozy. He later retracted his statement.

Financial prosecutors said that Sarkozy is suspected of "benefitting from corruptly influencing a witness," in reference to Takieddine.

Sarkozy's wife, former supermodel Carla Bruni-Sarkozy,was given preliminary chargesin July 2024 for alleged involvement in efforts to pressure Takieddine. Bruni-Sarkozy was placed under judicial supervision, which includes a ban on contact with all those involved in the proceedings except for her husband.

Investigative magistrates still have to decide whether they send the couple to trial on these charges.

Takieddine died in September in Beirut.

Previous conviction

Sarkozy's criminal records register one definitive conviction for corruption and influence peddling while he was the country's head of state.

Last year, the Court of Cassation upheld an appeals court decision that had found Sarkozy guilty oftrying to bribe a magistratein exchange for information about legal proceedings in which he was involved. The case was revealed through wiretapped phone conversations during the Libya financing investigation.

Sarkozy was sentenced to a year in prison, but he was entitled to be detained at home with an electronic bracelet. He was granted conditional release in May because of his age, which allowed him to remove the electronic tag after just over three months.

He wasstripped of his Legion of Honormedal, France's highest distinction, following his conviction in that case.

Israel identifies the latest remains returned from Gaza as hostage Dror Or

JERUSALEM (AP) — Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that Israel had identified thelatest remains returned from Gazaas hostage Dror Or.

That leaves the bodies of two hostages in Gaza as the first phase of the Israel-Hamas ceasefire agreement nears a conclusion.

Palestinian militants released Or's remains Tuesday.

Israel has agreed to release 15 Palestinian bodies for each hostage returned.

Dror Or was killed by Islamic Jihad militants who overran his home in Kibbutz Beeri on Oct. 7, 2023, Israel's military said. His wife, Yonat Or, was also killed in the attack.

That day, Palestinian militants killed some 1,200 people across southern Israel and abducted 251 to Gaza. Kibbutz Beeri was one of the hardest-hit farming communities in that attack that started the war in Gaza.

Two of Or's children, Alma and Noam, were abducted by the militants on Oct. 7 and released in a hostage deal in November 2023.

Almost all of the hostages or their remains have been returned in ceasefires or other deals. The remains of two — one Israeli and one Thai national— are still in Gaza.

Gaza's Health Ministry says more than 69,700 Palestinians have been killed and 170,800 injured in Israel's retaliatory offensive. The toll has increased during the ceasefire both from new Israeli strikes and from the recovery and identification of bodies of people killed earlier in the war.

The ministry does not distinguish between civilians and combatants in its figures but has said women and children make up a majority of those killed. The ministry, part of the Hamas-run government and staffed by medical professionals, maintains detailed records viewed as generally reliable by independent experts.

Moravian stars light up Germany's Christmas season

HERRNHUT, Germany (AP) — BrightChristmasstars have long been a familiar sight acrossGermanyduring the darkest days of the year, but none is more famous — and lately as popular — as the Moravian stars from the eastern village of Herrnhut near the Polish and Czech borders.

They come in different sizes and shine in varying colors. They decorate church steeples and apartment windows, and even adorn the chancellery in Berlin duringAdvent.

"It's the symbol of the Star ofBethlehem, which guided the three wise men to the Christ Child in the manger," said Katja Ruppert, managing director of the Herrnhuter Sterne manufacturing company.

The stars have been handmade for over 180 years in Herrnhut, which was founded by refugees of the Moravian Church fleeing from the historical provinces of Bohemia and Moravia in what is now the Czech Republic.

Members of the church, one of the world's oldestProtestantdenominations, found refuge in the German region in 1722 under the auspices of Count Nikolaus von Zinzendorf, who granted them asylum from prosecution byCatholics. He provided them with land where the believers founded Herrnhut, which roughly translates to "Under the Protection of the Lord."

The famous Christmas star was created during a geometry lesson

The church members were very active in education. In one of the schools they founded, the famous Moravian star was created when a math teacher — trying to descriptively explain geometry — asked his students to create a "truncated cuboctahedron with 17 four-corner based points and eight three-corner based points."

That initial cardboard star was patented in 1925, in a way that its points could be dismantled for shipping and later be clamped together again.

The smallest star has a diameter of 8 centimeters (3.14 inches) and sells from 19 euros ($22), while the biggest one measures 130 centimeters and costs 205 euros. Special orders are more expensive and can measure up to 250 cm.

Originally, the points of the Moravian star were white and red, symbolizing both "purity and the blood of Jesus Christ," Ruppert explained in an interview with The Associated Press.

As the production of the stars expanded, so did the range of colors. Today they are made out of paper or plastic and come monochrome, varicolored, or with patterns including some made out of the pages of old books that are dubbed "literary stars."

There are even stars with floral spring motives for those who want to keep the decorative ornaments up in their homes all year, not just during Christmas season.

People can make their own stars at a workshop in Herrnhut

Recently, the company also opened a handicrafts workshop in Herrnhut where people can make their own stars. In addition, there's a big showroom presenting and selling all different varieties. White, yellow and red are among the most popular creations, but the company's annual special edition — this year its a shiny, purple star — has also become a sought-after collectible item.

"We are now taking part in many Christmas markets. We have gone to trade fairs. We have found many retailers who would like to work with us there," Ruppert said, explaining how the Moravian star's popularity has spread widely within Germany in the past 20 years.

Nowadays, about 230 employees make more than 820,000 stars every year and more than 60,000 people visit the store and workshop annually, mostly during the weeks before Christmas.

So far, the star is not being exported extensively to other countries, Ruppert said. But other communities of the Moravian Church such as the one inBethlehem, Pennsylvania,or Christiansfeld in Denmark, also are featuring the star as a symbol of their faith during Advent.

Silk Schmidt, a hairdresser from Neueibau in southeastern Saxony, had come to Herrnhut with her sister-in-law in mid-November to make three stars as Christmas gifts for her two sons and mother.

"I myself have at least ten stars at home," she said, adding that she usually puts them up on the first weekend of Advent.

"When it's so dark outside and not nice anymore, then the stars hang in the window, which is actually really beautiful," she said.

"Lights everywhere."

The Rams are expected to hire the UConn head coach for the same position in Fort Collins, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel, with a deal expected to come together in the near future.

Mora has head coaching experience in both the NFL and the Power Five, having held the job for the Atlanta Falcons, Seattle Seahawks and UCLA. A few years after his firing by UCLA, he joined a near-destitute UConn program in 2021, the successor to Randy Edsall's disastrous second tenure, and has since built the program up to a winner, with back-to-back nine-win seasons in 2024 and 2025.

The Huskies were not beaten in regulation this season, as all three of their losses came in overtime.

That success made the 64-year-old Mora an attractive candidate for some schools this coaching cycle, and he is reportedly landing at a Fort Collins program that needs a similar revival as it heads to a revamped Pac-12. The conference might not be as competitive as its past iteration, but it's clearly shooting for a level of prestige above Colorado State's past home of the Mountain West and other Group of Five conferences.

Mora is replacing Jay Norvell, who was fired this season after a 2-5 start. The Rams posted an 18-26 record in Norvell's four seasons with the program and haven't won a bowl game since 2013, when Jim McElwain was head coach.

Brian Kelly's lawyers: LSU 'made it nearly impossible' to get new job

Attorneys representing Brian Kelly have alleged that LSU's handling of the embattled coach's buyout negotiations has become an obstacle for him to be hired elsewhere.

Kelly's team sent a pair of letters last week to new LSU athletic director Verge Ausberry and board of supervisors member John Carmouche, which accused the university of harming Kelly's future employment opportunities by not confirming that he was fired without cause.

"As you know, there is absolutely no basis to LSU's contrived positions that Coach Kelly was not terminated or that cause existed for such termination," a letter sent Nov. 18 and obtained by multiple outlets said. "LSU's conduct, including its failure to confirm that Coach Kelly was terminated without cause and its unsupported allegations of misconduct on the part of Coach Kelly, has made it nearly impossible for Coach Kelly to secure other football-related employment."

A follow-up letter dated Nov. 19 reportedly said Kelly would withdraw his lawsuit against the school if LSU would confirm in writing that he was fired without cause, meaning the decision had solely to do with the football team's performance.

Kelly filed his suit in a Louisiana court earlier this month seeking confirmation that LSU fired him without cause and therefore owed him the rest of the money on his contract. His buyout was worth between $53-54 million when LSU dismissed him Oct. 26 after a 49-25 loss to Texas A&M.

That lawsuit said LSU informed Kelly he had not yet been "formally terminated" and that the school was planning to argue he would be fired for cause. But Kelly's buyout clause includes offset language if he is able to land a new job, which could reduce some of the total LSU owes him.

LSU's board on Friday voted in favor of allowing new university president Wade Rousse to formally terminate Kelly. LSU has not commented on the ongoing matter.

With only one week of NBA Cup action left, the league had six teams in action Tuesday, all with significant ramifications for group play. Here's how the night shook out:

That marked the franchise's first win in more than a month, and their first home win since last April.
