Dick Van Dyke Recalls Mary Tyler Moore Being ‘Pissed’ at Him for Making Her Mouth Too Big in a Cartoon He Drew of Her

Dick Van Dykeonce "pissed" off longtime friendMary Tyler Moore, who essentially told him he "ain't leavin'" until he redrew his cartoon of her.

Speaking at Vandy High Tea — hosted at the Van Dyke residence in Malibu, Calif., on Nov. 30 — the 99-year-old entertainer recalled the caricature he once drew ofMoore, who died at 80in 2017.

"I made her mouth too big, and she was so pissed at me," he said at the charity event that raises funds to benefit the Van Dyke Endowment of the Arts and the in-development Dick Van Dyke Museum.

Van Dyke, who willturn 100 on Dec. 13, continued, "I had to go back and draw it again. I mean, she had a beautiful mouth, but it was generous."

His wife,Arlene Silver, who was also at the event produced byChris Isaacson Presents, added, "She turned the world on with her smile."

The couple started discussing the Moore caricature after a guest at the event asked Van Dyke whether he is ambidextrous and if he could draw with one hand and write with his other hand.

"Well, back when I was in grade school, you weren't allowed to be left-handed," he explained. "I'm left-handed, but I had to learn to write with my right hand. I don't know what that did to my brain, but that is really funny."

"You were saying what a great artist he is," Silver, 54, chimed in. "He's a great artist. …We got something in the mail the other day. This stained glass of Mary Tyler Moore that you drew forThe Dick Van Dyke Show."

Van Dyke and Moore starred inThe Dick Van Dyke Showfor five seasons, from 1961 to 1966.
