Martin Short's flub atSelena Gomezand Benny Blanco's wedding truly takes the cake.

The comedian, 75, revealed that he almost ruined hisOnly Murders in the Buildingcostar's special day by accidentally cutting into the couple's wedding cake before the bride and groom.

"The wedding was perfect and it was beautiful and it was in Santa Barbara and all these big tents," Short explained on Wednesday's episode ofJimmy Kimmel Live. "So everything was perfect except the night of the reception."

He went on to describe the event as a "big, big party" that was complete with a stage, dance floor, and a large seated section at the back of the tent for guests to sit and mingle.

"We had a group,Only Murders in the Building, there was about 12 of us," Short shared, noting that their costarPaul Ruddand his wife Julie Yaeger were also in attendance.

"There was a wedding cake by our section, but it was a small wedding cake," he said. "I just assumed there was a wedding cake for each section in the back."

A few hours later, Short noted that Gomez and Blanco still hadn't cut their wedding cake when Steve Martin announced that he was preparing to leave the event.

"Maybe I'd had a cocktail, I don't know," Short prefaced. "So I said, 'Oh, Steve, you can't leave!' I had a fork in my hand. 'You can't leave yet without a piece of wedding cake!' And I cut the wedding cake, one side, cut it the other, and then all the people in our group scream: 'Marty!' It was the wedding cake."

The cameras then cut to an image of a white cake with "just married" written on top and two very visible slices across its front. "I tried to fix it with a fork," Short added. "This was bad. This was about an hour before it was to be presented. And so I turned to Paul Rudd and said, 'So, do we just leave?'"

Thankfully, the wedding coordinator was called in to handle the situation. "Then the chef came out. He was like a [French] guy, [shouting], 'What the hell happened here?'" Short recalled. "Then they did surgery, but it ended up being like a Hollywood wedding cake and that it was beautiful, but now it had a little work done."

He added, "Steve was so stunned when I did that, he gained color."

Host Jimmy Kimmel noted that the repair job on the cake was "not great," but managed to do the job.

Short also tried his best to escape getting in trouble with the newlyweds. "I kept saying, 'Guys, we can't let Selena know!'" he said. "And [Steve Martin] said, 'Maybe we tell her in a month or so.'"

His plan, however, didn't last long. "As I was leaving, Selena came by, 'Hey, Marty! I heard you tried to eat my cake!'"
