Texans vs. Chargers score, live updates: Playoff implications abound as Houston, Los Angeles face off

The Houston Texans and Los Angeles Chargers have a huge game in Week 17, withwild-card and divisional implications. The Chargers have clinched a playoff spot, while the Texans are still in the hunt, just one game behind Jacksonville in the AFC South.

Houston (10-5) is on a seven-game win streak and feels destined for a playoff run led by the No. 1 defense in the NFL. All that needs to be settled is whether it'll be on the road as a wild card in the first round or playing at home as the AFC South champs for a third consecutive year. The only thing that could hold back Houston is an offense that occasionally gets in its own way.

This Chargers (11-4) team has hung around all season and quietly has a chance to win the AFC West after trailing in the division for most of the season. The Chargers made easy work of the Cowboys in Week 16 and received a helping hand when Jacksonville knocked off Denver. If the Chargers can get past Houston this week, it could set up a winner-take-all scenario in the final week of the season when they take on the Broncos in Denver.

Giannis Antetokounmpo (calf) listed as questionable for Bucks' Saturday night game against Bulls

The Milwaukee Bucks could get a big boost to their lineup Saturday night with the anticipated return of Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to The Athletic's Eric Nehm.

Antetokounmpo has been out sinceDec. 3 with a right calf strainand as long as pregame testing by the team's athletic training staff goes well, he will play against the Chicago Bulls at United Center.

The Bucks have listed Antetokounmpo as "questionable" on Saturday's injury report.

Antetokounmpo dropped to the floor with a non-contact injury during the opening quarter of the Bucks'Dec. 3 win over the Detroit Pistons. After limping to the locker room, he was eventuallyruled out due to a soleus strain, the same injury that caused his 2023-24 season to come to a premature end.

[Get more Bucks news: Milwaukee team feed]

The Bucks have gone 2-6 in Antetokounmpo's absence and are 10-19 overall on the season. That puts them 11th in the Eastern Conference, chasing the Bulls and Atlanta Hawks for a play-in spot, and five games behind the Orlando Magic for the eighth seed.

Through 17 games, the 30-year-old Antetokounmpo is averaging 28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists.

Antetokounmpo's injury, coupled with his contract status, has also caused the rumor mill to heat up while he's been out. After inkinga three-year extensionwith Milwaukee in 2023, he still has a year and a half remaining on his current deal before he can opt out.

After a report came out that the former MVP was talking to the team about his future with the franchise,Antetokounmpo denied any role in the talksand indicated his agent was handling them without his input.

While therewould be a large market interestedin acquiring his services, Antetokounmpo has been focused on his health and pushing the Bucks back into winning ways.

"I'm still locked in, locked in on my teammates. Most importantly, locked in on me getting back healthy,"Antetokounmpo said on Dec. 18. "And then, locked in on my teammates and how can I help them from the sideline or encourage them to be able to play and play free?

"Because at the end of the day, it takes a toll on them, too, right? They're playing game after game after game. Thank God we've had a very good schedule in the last couple of weeks, but it takes a toll on them, too — rumors, injuries, lose, win. It's hard, right? As a leader, but most importantly as a winner, you just gotta be there for them first."

X-rays negative for Hornets rookie Kon Knueppel (ankle)

Early indications were that Charlotte Hornets rookie guard Kon Knueppel avoided a serious ankle injury during Friday night's win at Orlando.

The Rookie of the Year candidate left late in the first half after twisting his right ankle as he came down for a rebound, finishing the 120-105 victory over the Magic with 16 points.

Hornets coach Charles Lee told reporters after the game that X-rays were negative and Knueppel would receive further evaluation after the team returned to Charlotte.

Knueppel was tracking down Desmond Bane as he drove to the hoop, and Knueppel went up for a rebound. Knueppel's right foot landed on teammate Moussa Diabate's right foot, and Knueppel's ankle twisted badly with 15.9 seconds left in the half.

After staying down for a couple of minutes, Knueppel was helped back to the Hornets' locker room and later ruled out for the game.

Knueppel, 20, was the No. 4 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft out of Duke. He is averaging 19.3 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists in 31 games (30 starts) and shooting 42.8% from 3-point range.

Why watch a movie you know might make you cry? For the same reason people love to go to the movies to laugh or be scared: catharsis. There's something profound about connecting to a struggle, and the right films earn your tears through strong character development, committed performances, and themes that resonate with the viewer's own experiences.

HBO Max has a wide swath ofofferings in the tearjerker department, running the gamut from classic humanist tales likeBicycle Thieves(1948) andIkiru(1952), to tragic romances likeBrief Encounter(1945) andIn the Mood for Love(2000), to modern weepies likeWe Live in Time(2024).

Ahead, find our recommendations for the 15 best sad movies on HBO Max, for whenever you need a good cry.

Bicycle Thieves(1948)

Everett Vittorio De Sica (center) and Lamberto Maggiorani (right) on the set of 'Bicycle Thieves'

The defining accomplishment of Italy's neorealist period,Bicycle Thievesis deceptively simple: A man gets a job. To do it, he needs a bike. Another man steals his bike. As a moral premise, this is easy, right? After all, Antonio (Lamberto Maggiorani) has a young son and a newborn to feed. But the film's profundity lies in its understanding that the thief, like so much of postwar Italy's working class, is in the same boat as Antonio. In other words, the desperation is circular. It's inevitable that, eventually, Antonio will be desperate enough to steal a bike himself, which is just one of the film's many brutal ironies.

The emotional themes featured in this British classic are as resonant today as they were in the 1940s. David Lean's intimate drama follows an unfulfilled married woman (Celia Johnson) who meets a charming married doctor (Trevor Howard) and connects instantly. As they continue to spend more time together, they are tempted to take their relationship to the next level, despite the realities of their home lives.

The push and pull between the union they want and the pressures of society is potent and free of judgment, and Johnson's soulful eyes tell us everything, even when she's not saying a word. —Kevin Jacobsen

If you're looking for sad cinema, Swedish directorIngmar Bergmancan help. This harrowing Oscar-nominated drama centers on a pair of sisters, Maria (Liv Ullmann) and Karin (Ingrid Thulin), as they attend to their other sister, Agnes (Harriet Andersson), who is dying of cancer. But the relationship between the siblings is extremely complicated, plagued with jealousy and traumas that make this far from a sentimental tearjerker. Bergman brings his trademark uncompromising realism to the film — as well as a stunning red color palette — making us feel every agonized moan of despair. —K.J.

Dope Sick Love(2005)

HBO/Max A woman using a needle to do drugs in 'Dope Sick Love'

Dope Sick Lovegets its power from its powerlessness. This unfiltered depiction of two couples experiencing drug problems on the streets of New York — hustling, scoring, surviving — isn't framed by an inspiring message of recovery. There are no talking-head interviews putting addiction into a moral context, nor are there romanticized vagabonds. Instead, the camera simply observes these lives, which are astonishing in their ugliness, danger, and dread.

The very idea of intervention — by filmmakers, by medical professionals, or by family members on the periphery of these addicts' lives — is a no-go. What makes the documentary so affecting is that it simply refuses to look away.

Every Brilliant Thing(2016)

HBO/Max Jonny Donahoe in 'Every Brilliant Thing'

Every Brilliant Thing, the HBO recording of British comedian Jonny Donahoe's one-man show, takes pleasure in small moments. The conceit is simple and strangely moving: A young boy creates a list of things that make life worth living to cheer up his depressed mother, who attempted suicide. The performance invites the audience to participate, reading out various bits from the list — "the smell of old books" is one, "sunlight" another — and finding joy in the small things that populate our daily lives. The show's inherent sorrow is alleviated by Donahoe's sense of hope, humor, and the notion that being alive is beautiful.

  • Costume designer Paul Tazewell tells PEOPLE that it's a "compliment" that Elphaba's "sex cardigan" went viral

  • "I know that the decision and the collaboration with Cynthia Erivo around the cardigan was very specific," he tells PEOPLE

  • Wicked: For Good is in theaters now

Costume designer Paul Tazewell poured his heart and soul into the wardrobe forWickedandWicked: For Good.

And while Glinda's gowns have certainly drawn buzz, it's that Elphaba sex cardigan that's still taking up residence in so many fans' brains.

The movie may have landed in theaters over a month ago, but the cardigan that Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) wears during her intimate scene with Fiyero (Jonathan Bailey) while they're singing "As Long as You're Mine," is still a hot topic.

Tazewell has heard it all — and he's addressed it, defending the cozy, furry piece that's decidedly unsexy during the loving moment. For him and Erivo, the piece was perfect, and he's tickled that it's gone so viral.

"At first I was like, 'What is this about the cardigan?'" he tells PEOPLE with a laugh at theWicked: For Goodhome release event in New York. "But then it became a huge compliment. I know that the decision and the collaboration with Cynthia Erivo around the cardigan was very specific."

Tazewell adds that everything about the creation of the cardigan was "very intentional."

"The fact that she's in exile, Elphaba at this moment in the story, we needed to make sense of, where does she get all these things? And what we set up was that she can be a maker. She's actually a Munchkinlander, and that culture is based on making."

The floor-length cardigan, in Tazewell's mind, would have been created by Elphaba's own hands, because he imagined that she "grew up knowing how to knit and sew and create for herself and take care of herself."

"That made it plausible to have a cardigan that was comforting, that was protective, that was practical, and that was reflective of her environment," he says.

Tazewell previously toldNPRthat itwouldn't have made sense for Elphaba to wear something more sexybecause that was simply not in character. He said a "black, slinky peignoir" would not have worked at that point in time (though it was more fitting for the end of the movie as Elphaba heads off into the sunset with Fiyero as the Scarecrow).

Erivo, who worked closely with Tazewell in crafting Elphaba's wardrobe, also previouslydefended the piece, saying that the scene with Fiyero was a different side that the character hadn't been able to show yet. She wanted to appear "soft."

"I just wanted to present an opportunity to see this character who everybody at this point has seen as this strong fighting woman, who is the wicked witch, as someone who could actually be on her own," the star said at Elphaba's Wicked Retreat Airbnb Originals Experience in Los Angeles at the beginning of December. "I just wanted something that removed the armor for a second and yes, shows you a more sensual, more connected side of her."

She clarified that the intention was "not to turn her into a sexual object.""The aim is to make her a soft human that could be worthy of being loved and having an intimate moment with someone. That's beautiful."

Giles Keyte/Universal Pictures

In creating these two larger-than-life films' wardrobes, Tazewell tapped into a variety of inspiration, whether it was Gregory Maguire'sWickedbook or the original source material,The Wizard of Oz. He tells PEOPLE that he wanted everything to come together to tell the story of Oz.

"I also went to nature, elements of nature that are timeless. And establishing a style, a visual style and a sensibility that was specific to the people of Oz, even though you have groups, communities that live in Munchkinland, you have communities that are Uplanders where Glinda is from, you have communities that are in Emerald City, all of those lands needed to speak together," Tazewell shares. "I think that the beauty of the story ofWickedis that these are very real emotions that our two main characters are grappling with, and the idea of love, idea of intimacy with Fiyero, are all told allegorically through these fantasy characters. So I wanted to make sure that we were establishing a world that felt completely real in itself, that you as the audience member can walk into Oz and everything was answered, everything made sense. It's not a cartoon of the world, it is the world. And that was a great joy for me as a designer."

Dolly Parton's Mysterious Bond With Elvis Presley, Why She Said They Were 'Kin'

Dolly Partonalwaysfelt a special bondwithElvis Presley, once describing him as "kin," even though the two never met in person.

Back in 1978, Parton sat down for an interview withPlayboy Magazine, where she shared why she believed there was a unique bond between her and the King of Rock and Roll. She believed it had a lot to do with their shared upbringings.

"I never [met him]," Parton admitted. "But I always felt that we were kin. I feel like I know exactly how he was. Every time he'd come in town, even if I was home, I just wouldn't go, somethin' always kept me from goin'."

She continued, "There were other people I liked to hear sing better, but there was nobody that I ever related to more. He was very loving, very emotional, very sensitive, very giving, very humble, thankful, grateful. I always felt that he was totally in awe of his ownsuccessand he didn't quite understand why he had been so chosen and why he was such an idol."

Parton believed that their shared feelings about God and religion further connected them. Both were Christians who felt they had a calling to use their musical talents to serve others.

Parton shared a story withPatheosabout the moment she knew she had to use her musical talents in that manner. "I remember when people used to pray, in our church, they'd anoint with oil, pray for the sick, or whatever."

"I had been hearing people say, 'Anoint someone with oil.' But when that old lady told me I was anointed, I didn't know what that meant; I was just thinking it was like being anointed witholive oil. But Mama said, 'No, that means that God has his hand on you, and you may do something special.'"

Presley felt the same deep spiritual connection as Parton. His stepbrother,Billy Stanley, toldThe Guardianin 2022, "He relied on God for everything. It's where he got his strength. Elvis was so appreciative of what the Lord had given him. He thanked God every day and constantly sought God's guidance through prayer andreadingthe Bible."

Dolly Parton and Elvis Presley never met in person. By the time she was climbing the ladder of success in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Elvis had already entered a very insular phase of his career. He rarely attended industry events, did few casual appearances, and mostly interacted within a tightly controlled inner circle.

Both artists continued to share their spirituality throughmusic, both releasing powerful odes to their faith throughout their careers, including covers of the classic "How Great Thou Art." Presley released his Grammy-winning version in 1967, while Parton's was included on her 1971 albumGolden Streets of Glory.

Their bond existed in spirit rather than in person as two artists shaped by similar origins whose paths ran parallel, but never quite intersected.

Lee Johnston

The family of a British man killed while fighting for Ukraine fear his body might never be recovered from no man's land.

Lee "Janty" Johnston, 46, a former amateur boxer who ran a children's boxing club in north Belfast, is officially listed as missing in action in Donbas.

His death was reported on Oct 15 by the unofficial group Memorial: International Volunteers for Ukraine, but his body has not been recovered.

It is thought to be in the "grey zone", or no man's land, where theremains of thousands of soldiersfrom both sides are believed to lie after nearly four years of war.

Constant drone surveillance and artillery strikes mean it is almost impossible to recover bodies from the zone.

Lee Johnston in a family photograph Lee Johnston in uniform during his stay in Ukraine

Mr Johnston's mother, Dolores, told The Telegraph that a ceasefire was the only hope of hisbody being recoveredand brought home to Belfast.

An early draft of aUS-Russia-Europe peace proposalis understood to have included provisions for the return of missing soldiers' bodies on both sides.

"I can't rest while Lee is lying out there," she said, adding that she wanted to know more about her son's final moments.

She said: "I know there are many Ukrainian mothers also waiting for information like me. And I have as much sympathy for Russian mothers who have lost their child and are feeling the same way I do.

"You can't have closure till you know what happened."

He was 'like a father figure'

Under Ukrainian military rules, until a body is recovered, families are told only that a soldier is missing in action.

Many thousands of Ukrainian families remain in the same position as Mrs Johnston, without the official death notification that would bring them closure or the chance to bury their loved ones.

Nicolai Holm Pedersen, a Danish volunteer who fought alongside Mr Johnston, said: "Janty was like a father figure to me all through basic training. His death hit me very hard."

Mr Pedersen said his friend's body remained where he had fallen because it was too dangerous to retrieve it.

He said Mr Johnston was killed on his first mission while attempting to reach a position to relieve soldiers who had been killed or wounded.

During the hazardous two-day journey to his designated forward position, Mr Johnston had passed the bodies of other Ukrainian soldiers still lying where they had fallen.

Drones have transformed the battlefield, expanding kill zones far beyond traditional front lines, so recovery teams must wait for brief windows when surveillance eases.

Ukrainian forces firing towards Russians in Donbas, where Russian advances mean Mr Johnston's body is becoming more out of reach of recovery by the Ukrainians Ukrainian soldiers install anti-drone nets in Isyum, about 15 miles from the front line

A further complication for the Ukrainian recovery units is that in areas where Russian forces are slowly gaining territory, the Ukrainian dead on the battlefield are being left ever further out of reach.

"We do everything we can to get all soldiers' bodies back and return them to the families," an official from the unit in which Mr Johnston served, the Third Assault Brigade, told The Telegraph.

Ukrainian units sometimes use robot ground drones to bring back the dead, but the technology is new and recovery is not always feasible.

The only alternative is to have soldiers carry a body out, putting more lives at risk, the Ukrainian official added.

Scammer preyed on family

Mr Johnson's family's ordeal was compounded by a scammer posing as a Ukrainian soldier involved in body recovery.

A man calling himself "Sergeant Czaba" contacted Mrs Johnston, claiming he could retrieve her son's body for a fee, and urging her to solicit donations through a fundraising page.

"The cruellest part was the pressure from 'Sgt' Czaba to pay to keep Lee's body in a freezer," Mrs Johnston said. "He told me I didn't care if Lee went into a common grave."

She said the man sent menacing messages and exploited the family's grief, adding: "I told him I knew exactly what he was doing. He betrayed Lee's trust. Lee believed he was his friend."

The scammer is thought not to have been a soldier but may have shared accommodation with Mr Johnston in Lviv when he enlisted.

The Foreign Office has confirmed Mr Johnston is missing.
