James Van Der Beek, Celine Dion, more stars open up about their health struggles

Celebrities such asSelma Blair,Jada Pinkett Smith,Selena GomezandJustin Bieberhave embraced speaking out about ongoing health issues, encouraging fans to do the same. Here are more stars who opened up about their health struggles. The "Dawson's Creek" starJames Van Der Beekrevealed in November 2024 that he is battling Stage 3 colorectal cancer.A year later, the 48-year-old actor announced an auction of memorabilia from his teen heartthrob heyday through a partnership with Propstore scheduled for Dec. 5–7, 2025.

What is chronic kidney disease?

With chronic kidney disease, damaged kidneys "gradually lose their ability tofilter waste, toxins, and extra water from the blood," Dr. Jason Nagata, an associate professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, previously explained to USA TODAY.

The most common causes of CKD are high blood pressure anddiabetes, "which damage the small blood vessels and filtering units in the kidneys over time," says Nagata. Other potential causes he points to include immune system disorders or recurrent kidney infections.

In the early stages of the disease, this can result in mild symptoms such asreduced appetiteor feelings of fatigue, but as CKD progresses, "complications like high blood pressure, heart disease, anemia, nerve damage, and fluid retention can arise," says Nagata. "Without treatment, chronic kidney disease can lead to end-stage kidney failure, which is fatal without dialysis or a kidney transplant."

In the United States, more than 1 in 7 (about 35.5 million) people have CKD, per theU.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The department also estimates that "as many as 9 in 10 adults with CKD do not know they have it." The chronic disease causes more deaths each year than breast cancer or prostate cancer, according to theNational Kidney Foundation.

Federal judge appears skeptical of DOJ's argument for White House ballroom

WASHINGTON — A federal judge appears to be leaning toward hitting the pause button on theWhite House ballroom's construction.

NBC Universal

While U.S. District Judge Richard Leon did not rule from the bench Thursday, promising a decision next month, his comments during arguments left little doubt about what way he was leaning.

Attorney Thad Heuer, representing the nonprofit National Trust for Historic Preservation, a group that works to protect U.S. historic sites, argued that the president does not have the constitutional authority totear down the East Wing of the White Houseand construct a ballroom.

"He's not the owner" of the White House, Heuer said.

Leon appeared to agree, saying, "He's the steward."

There was a great deal of discussion about the funding mechanism for the project. Leon compared it several times to a "Rube Goldberg Contraption," because of the novel way the Trump administration is avoiding direct congressional authorization for the project.

The administration cites several federal statutes — and hundreds of millions of dollars in private funding — to argue that the construction is legal.

"Congress does not hide elephants in mouse holes," Heuer suggested about several million dollars in congressional appropriations earmarked for "alterations and improvements" that the Trump administration argues allows for the construction of a $400 million ballroom.

Justice Department attorney Yaakov Roth, representing the Trump administration, said when he was asked why Trump didn't ask Congress for funding and therefore authorization to build, "The president didn't want $400 million in taxpayer money to be used for this."

"He wanted to use donations," Roth said.

NBCUniversal's parent company, Comcast Corp., isamong the donors.

Roth also cited the White House pool President Gerald Ford built in 1975 and the White House Tennis Complex as two structures on the White House grounds that didn't get direct congressional authorization.

Leon appeared skeptical of that line of argument. "The '70s Ford pool? You compare that to ripping down the East Wing?" Leon asked. "C'mon, be serious."

Roth claimed the Trump administration would be "irreparably harmed" if Leon were to order construction paused.

"Are we going to suspend construction in the middle?" Roth asked. He said a pause would expose the existing building to the elements and create national security concerns.

As for whether the White House bunker construction — which is ongoing underneath the ballroom site — could continue if the ballroom construction doesn't, Roth claimed, "It can't be divided that way."

Roth nodded to the political limitations of the president's actions. "Nobody has touched the Executive Mansion," he said.

"That is the core site," Roth added.

A White House official said this month that the administration is aiming for a final presentation of the ballroom to the National Capital Planning Commission in March.

Japan will hold an early election next month as Takaichi aims to capitalize on her popularity

TOKYO (AP) — Japanese Prime MinisterSanae Takaichidissolved the lower house of parliament on Friday, paving the way for an early election on Feb. 8.

The move is an attempt to capitalize on her popularity to help the governing party regain ground aftermajor lossesin recent years, but it will delay parliamentary approval for a budget that aims at boosting a struggling economy and addressing soaring prices.

Takaichi, elected in October as Japan's first female leader, has been in office only three months, but she has seen strong approval ratings of about 70%.

Takaichi's Liberal Democratic Party could still face some challenges as it reels from a series of scandals about corruption and the party's past ties to theUnification Church. But it's not clear if the new opposition Centrist Reform Alliance can attract moderate voters, while opposition parties are still too splintered to a pose a serious threat to the LDP.

Takaichi is also seeing rising animosity with China, since makingremarks on Taiwan. And U.S. PresidentDonald Trumpwants her to spend more on weapons, as Washington and Beijing pursue military superiority in the region.

The dissolution of the 465-member lower House of Representatives paves the way for a 12-day campaign that officially starts Tuesday. When Speaker Fukushiro Nukaga declared the dissolution, lawmakers stood up, shouted banzai — "long live" — three times and rushed out to prepare for the campaign.

Hopes for a majority

Takaichi's plan for an early election aims to capitalize on her popularity to win a governing majority in the lower House, the more powerful of Japan's two-chamber parliament called the National Diet.

The scandal-tainted LDP and its coalition had a slim majority in the lower House after an election loss in 2024. The coalition lacks a majority in the upper House of Councillors and relies on winning votes from opposition members to pass its agenda.

Opposition leaders criticized Takaichi for delaying passage of a budget needed to fund key economic measures.

"I believe that the only option is for the people, as sovereign citizens, to decide whether Sanae Takaichi should be prime minister," she told a news conference Monday when announcing plans for the election. "I'm staking my career as prime minister" on it.

Takaichi, a hard-line conservative, wants to highlight differences with her centrist predecessor,Shigeru Ishiba.

Takaichi stresses that voters need to judge her fiscal spending moves, further military buildup and tougher immigration policies to make Japan "strong and prosperous."

While an upbeat and decisive image has earned her strong approval ratings and fans of her personal style, the LDP isn't popular as it recovers from a political funds scandal. Many traditional LDP voters have shifted to emerging far-right populist opposition parties, such as the anti-globalist Sanseito.

China, Trump and corruption scandals

Meanwhile, Japan faces escalating tensions with China after Takaichi made remarks suggesting that Japan could become involved if China takes military action against Taiwan, a self-governing island that Beijing claims as its own. A furious China has increased economic and diplomatic retribution.

Takaichi wants to push further a military buildup and spending increases, while Trump has pressured Japan to spend more on defense.

Divided opposition

Takaichi says she needs a mandate to push policies she's agreed on with her new coalition partner, the right-wing Japan Innovation Party, or JIP. They struck a deal in October to pursue goals that include a stronger military, continuingmale-only imperial succession, and accelerating thereactivation of offline nuclear reactors.

Takaichi struck a deal with the JIP after the LDP'slongtime ally Komeito, a Buddhist-backed centrist party, left the governing bloc over her ideological views and reluctance to pursue anti-corruption measures. With the new partner's help, she secured just enough votes to become prime minister.

Komeito turned to the main liberal-leaning opposition, the Constitutional Democratic Party of Japan, to form the Centrist Reform Alliance just in time for the election.

"Now is our chance to start the centrist movement," said Yoshihiko Noda, a former prime minister and leader of the Constitutional Democrats.

He said the new alliance seeks to achieve a diverse, gender equal and inclusive society with "people-first politics," speaking at joint news conference with co-leader Tetsuo Saito, head of Komeito.

As divisions and confrontations spread globally and economic disparity widens at home, the new group is promising a "realistic" security policy and efforts to achieve a nuclear weapons-free world.

Opposition groups in Japan are seen as too splintered to win an election, and so far, polling for the alliance isn't promising. But Komeito's ability to turn out votes from the Soka Gakkai sect makes it a force to be reckoned with.

Takaichi's promises

Takaichi is focusing on the economy, looking to attract voters with measures to address rising prices and stagnant wages, as well as support for low-income households.

But the security hawk has also pledged torevise security and defense policiesto further strengthen the military, and to eliminate arms export restrictions to allow more sales and develop the Japanese defense industry.

Her party is also vowing tougher immigration rules and restrictions on foreigners living in Japan to address growing anti-foreign sentiment. Earlier this week, the LDP proposed new immigration policies including tougher requirements for foreign property owners and a cap on the number of foreign residents in Japan.

Mysterious hum rattles American city as residents report sleepless nights and rising fear

A persistent, low-frequency hum has invaded the city of West Haven, Connecticut, according to many residents, leaving some shaken by an occurrence they're calling everything frommysterious to excruciating.

For some time, residents of this city on the coast of Long Island Sound have believed the source of the hum to be local industry, and they're demanding a resolution. After circulating a petition and obtaining over 140 signatures, a group convinced the city council to spend $16,000 to hire a third-party acoustic firm.

"For years, our community has been plagued by a constant or intermittent humming noise and low-frequency vibrations affecting multiple areas of town," the petition notes. "This disturbing phenomenon occurs at all hours, disruptingour ability to sleep, concentrate and enjoy life to its fullest.
