Feds remove pride flag from Stonewall, iconic site in LGBTQ+ movement

NEW YORK – First, they removed the "T" from LGBTQ+.

Now, they've taken down the rainbow flag.

The Trump administration quietly removed a large pride flag at theStonewall National Monumentin New York City in recent days, just weeks after the government issued federal guidance on the types of flags that are allowed to be flown at national parks.

Volunteer caretakers of the monument noticed that the rainbow-colored flag had been removed on Monday, Feb. 9. The flag flew from atop a pole in a park across from the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in New York's Greenwich Village that was the scene of one of the most significant events in LGBTQ+ history.

"Removing the rainbow flag from the Stonewall National Monument again makes a target of what is sacred ground for our community – and another attempted act of erasure by an administration that has relentlessly attacked the LGBTQ+ community since the day it took office," said Cathy Renna, spokeswoman for the National LGBTQ Task Force.

The National Park Service said in a statement provided to USA TODAY that, with limited exceptions, only the U.S. flag and other authorized flags are permitted on flagpoles managed by the agency. The policy was outlined in a directive the agency issued on Jan. 21. Exemptions can include flags that provide historical context, current military branch flags and the flags of federally recognized Tribal nations.

"Any changes to flag displays are made to ensure consistency with that guidance," the statement said.

The removal of the flag, which has become an internationally recognized symbol of the gay-rights movement and the hard-fought gains it has won through years of struggles, infuriated activists as well as city and state leaders.

"I am outraged by the removal of the Rainbow Pride Flag from Stonewall National Monument," New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani said in astatementposted on X. "New York is the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, and no act of erasure will ever change, or silence, that history. Our city has a duty not just to honor this legacy, but to live up to it."

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul called the decision "a shameful attempt to erase our LGBTQ history."

"I will not let this administration roll back the rights we fought so hard for," she said in amessageposted on X.

The Stonewall National Monument commemorates a clash between police and members of the LGBTQ+ community that took place after officers raided the Stonewall Inn in the early morning hours of June 28, 1969. For six days, gay men and women, transgender people, bikers, street kids and others fed up with police harassment fought back. The riots are considered the spark that ignited the modern LGBTQ+-rights movement.

The Trump administration has removed a large pride flag at the Stonewall Inn National Monument. The monument, in New York's Greenwich Village, commemorates what is considered the birthplace of the modern LGBTQ+ movement.

The Stonewall uprising is regarded as such a significant chapter in American history that President Barack Obama designated the bar's exterior, the adjacent park and the surrounding streets as a national monument in 2016, so that what happened there, and the people involved, would never be forgotten. The bar itself remains privately owned.

The Stonewall Monument is the only site within the national park system dedicated to LGBTQ+ history, which makes its preservation all the more meaningful to activists and historians.

"It's a sacred space," said Brad Hoylman-Sigal, the Manhattan borough president, who recalled that Stonewall was the first place he visited when he moved to New York City three decades ago. "You really can't overestimate its importance to generations of LGBTQ people across the world."

More:Stonewall veterans sound alarm over Trump's attempt to erase trans history

Stacy Lentz, one of the bar's current owners, said the administration did not give her advance notice that the flag would be removed.

"We cannot allow the government to erase a historical fact," she said. "This isn't even about the politics of it all. This is about history, and that history has to be preserved."

"Stonewall taught us that our history doesn't survive unless we defend it," she added.

The removal of the flag marks the second time the Trump administration has targeted the monument in the past year.

Early last year, just weeks after PresidentDonald Trumptook office for the second time, the administration angered LGBTQ+ activists when it stripped allreferences to transgender peoplefrom the monument's website. The administration said the change was in keeping with Trump's broader campaign to recognize the existence of just two sexes – male and female – and combat what he calls "gender ideology."

Following that decision, more than 1,000 protesters showed up at a rally to support the transgender community and challenge the administration's actions. Another rally is planned for Tuesday evening, Feb. 10, to send a message to the administration to keep its hands off the park and its history.

Hoylman-Sigal and other state and community leaders are also planning a separate event on Thursday, Feb. 12, to again raise the flag over the park in defiance of the Trump administration.

"This is a flashpoint, just as it was back in 1969, for standing up for what you believe is right," Hoylman-Sigal said.

Hope For West Snowpack? Pattern Change May Finally Bring Rain, Mountain Snow To Parts Of West

What a strange winter we have seen in the West.

The Weather Channel

Sustained warmth continued to break daily records across the region. And to top it off, there was hardly any precipitation.

(MORE:Did Winter Forget The West?)

But I have some good news for all of us. The pattern that lasted through much of the winter is finally breaking down.

And with that comes cooler temperatures and the chance for rain and mountain snow.

First Round: Through Wednesday

The first round of rain and snow is ongoing across California now.

Think of this first round as more of a nuisance than anything else. Rainfall across the lower elevations isn't expected to be extreme at this point.

But the snowfall is more significant.

Winter weather alerts are in place across the Sierra Nevada and parts of the Rockies until Wednesday afternoon. The highest snowfall totals are in the winter storm warnings, as indicated by the dark blue on the map below.

Next Week Gets Interesting

What's ongoing this week is just foreshadowing what's to come. Models are pointing to significant precipitation beginning Sunday and lasting into next week.

This will likely mean that the California snowpack will see a major boost.

This is good news, as the snowpack in California is running about 50% of where it should be at this time of the year, according to the California Department of Water Resources.

While skiers and snowboarders are rejoicing, those across lower elevations may have some concerns.

With this pattern shift, there is a chance of days of sustained rainfall across California. That also means there is an increasing flood threat for the state, especially across burn scars.

This rainfall could last for days and could bring soaking weather as far south as Los Angeles and San Diego.

(FORECAST:Los Angeles|San Diego)

Why The Shift?

Most of the winter has seen the jet stream pulling north of the West and dipping to the South in the East. This pattern leads to less rainfall and warmer temperatures out West.

The graphic below shows what will happen next week. The jet stream will continue to dip to the south across the West, leading to cooler temperatures and an influx of much-needed rain and snow.

Why The Snowpack Matters

The snowpack across the West isn't just for skiers and snowboarders. It also helps provide a freshwater source to the West in the drier months.

This is why the lack of snowfall has been so concerning. The West is dependent on snow, which they haven't been seeing.

States like Colorado are even seeing record snowfall deficits this season.

While inclusion in the files does not indicate a person is a criminal suspect, it does, in some cases, show a person had social or business connections. Several people in European power circles are facing inquiries or investigations, while others have stepped down from various professional roles.

While Epstein's connections to leaders in business, academia and government have been known for years, the DOJ'sJan. 30 document drophas provided a wider sense of the relationships cultivated by Epstein, who died awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges. Many maintained contact with him even after his conviction in 2008 for soliciting a prostitute and procuring a child for prostitution in Florida. His plea required him to register as a sex offender in 2009.

UK government under fire over Epstein emails

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer is facing calls to step down, including from some within his own party, in connection with the Epstein files after he appointed Peter Mandelson, a friend of Epstein, as ambassador to the United States. (Starmer himself is not in any of the released documents.) Details of Mandelson's friendship with the late wealth manager became public after the latest round of documents from the DOJ revealed he'd corresponded with Epstein after he was a registered sex offender in 2009.

A little over a week after the Jan. 30 document dump, two of Starmer's aides have resigned: Communications chief Tim Allan and Starmer's top aide, Morgan McSweeney, who said he took responsibility for advising on the appointment of Mandelson to Britain's top diplomatic role. Mandelson has also resigned from the House of Lords.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer talks with Britain's ambassador to the United States Peter Mandelson during a welcome reception at the ambassador's residence on February 26, 2025, in Washington, DC, U.S.

British police are investigating Mandelson over allegations of "misconduct in public life" after he was accused of passing market-sensitive information to Epstein when he was business secretary under former British Prime Minister Gordon Brown over a decade ago. Mandelson has denied any wrongdoing in connection with Epstein.

Two royal families ensnared in Epstein controversy

Among the most well-known European figures who the documents show to have had yearslong friendships with Epstein are members of two royal families:Norway's Princess Mette-Maritand the United Kingdom'sAndrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the younger brother of King Charles III.

While Mountbatten-Windsor's relationship to Epstein has been known for years, the January document dump was the first time the Norwegian princess's correspondence became publicly available.

Mountbatten-Windsor was stripped of his royal titlein October 2025 andpushed out of his vast homeat Royal Lodge after reports of his association with Epstein hit a fever pitch. He wasousted as a senior royalthree years prior. Virginia Roberts Giuffre, a prominent Epstein accuser who died by suicide in 2025, alleged she was sexually abused by the former royal multiple times when she was 17 years old. Mountbatten-Windsor has denied the allegations.

Norway's Crown Prince Haakon and Crown Princess Mette-Marit attend the ceremony to award the Nobel Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, in Oslo, Norway December 10, 2025.

The latest release has only intensified scrutiny of the former prince, with the country's prime ministerurging him to testifyto U.S. lawmakers and forcingPrince William and Princess Kate to speak outabout the controversy after years of silence. Britain's King Charles said in a statement Feb. 9 released by Buckingham Palace that the palace isready to support the policeas they investigate allegations against the king's brother.

Princess Mette-Marit, the Crown Princess of Norway, exchanged dozens of emails with Epstein, some as recently as2014.The emails contradict a 2019 comment from the Royal Palace that she'd broken off contact with Epstein in 2011, according to theNorwegian tabloid VG.

Mette-Marit, wife of the heir to the throne, Crown Prince Haakon, has apologized for maintaining contact with Epstein, saying she displayed poor judgment. In her most recent statement, released Feb. 6, she apologized again, "for the situation that I have put the royal family in, especially the King and Queen."

Norway's prime minister on Feb. 9 said that Mette-Marit and other prominent Norwegians named in the recently released Epstein documents should provide more details about their involvement with Epstein.

Norway opens investigations into ex-leader and diplomats

Norwegian authoritiesannouncedthey are investigating two former ambassadors and a former prime minister over corruption tied to the Epstein files. All were known to have had ties to Epstein, but the new files have provided more details on their relationships and dealings with the late money manager.

Norway's Ambassador to the United Nations Mona Juul addresses the United Nations Security Council at the United Nations Headquarters in Manhattan, New York City, New York, U.S., April 5, 2022.

The country's economic and environmental crime unit said in a statement on Feb. 9 it had conducted searches at two locations tied to former ambassador Mona Juul and her husband, Terje Rød‑Larsen. The pair is being investigated over charges of aggravated corruption and contribution to aggravated corruption. Authorities had opened a separate corruption investigation into former Prime Minister Thorbjørn Jagland several days prior due to his alleged links to Epstein.

Jagland served as prime minister from 1996 to 1997, and also held top positions as chair of the Norwegian Nobel Committee and secretary general of the Council of Europe.

The diplomatic couple, Juul and Rød‑Larsen, helped facilitate contacts between the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Israeli government that led to the 1993-1995 Oslo Accords. Juul had been Norway's ambassador to Jordan and Iraq upon the latest Epstein file release, and has stepped down from the position. Rød‑Larsen is a former Deputy Prime Minister.

The files suggest that the couple and their children visited Epstein's island, and were named in a version of his will released in the Epstein documents. The two children stood to inherit $5 million apiece from him, according toReuters.

French and Slovakian officials scrutinized, among others

Jack Lang, a former French culture minister, has stepped down from his role as the head of a cultural center in Paris following allegations he previously had financial ties to Epstein. The allegations have triggered a tax investigation. Lang denies wrongdoing and has described the allegations against him as "baseless."

Lang was the head of the Arab World Institute, an organization that promotes exchanges between France and Arab nations. In a letter to Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot, viewed by the AFP news agency, Lang said that he would submit his resignation at the next board meeting of the Arab World Institute. Lang served as France's culture minister between 1981 and 1993. He later served as minister of education.

Miroslav Lajčák, an ally of Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico and his national security adviser, resigned after it emerged in documents from the Epstein files that he had exchanged text messages with Epstein about women and diplomacy. The texts date from when Lajčák was Slovakia's foreign minister in 2018.

In a statement, Lajčák said he was resigning to avoid causing any political damage to Fico. He denied any wrongdoing. He also condemned Epstein's alleged crimes.

Former Pitt women's basketball players call coach Tory Verdi abusive, toxic in Title IX lawsuits

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Six former players on the women's basketball team at the University of Pittsburgh have sued coach Tory Verdi and the school over what they call abusive coaching methods and say their efforts to seek help were ignored.

"These players aren't soft. We aren't talking about sensitive personality types," lawyer Keenan D. Holmes told The Associated Press on Tuesday. "Obviously, there are expectations placed on players. But this went beyond basketball. It went beyond the bounds of common decency."

Verdi, according to the lawsuit filed Friday, also tried to force players into the transfer portal, putting their scholarships at risk and threatening their academic and athletic futures.

The university denied the allegations in a brief statement issued Tuesday on behalf of both the coach and the school.

"The university is aware of these lawsuits and their allegations, which are without merit and will be vigorously defended," the statement said.

Verdi has struggled over three seasons at Pitt after notching a winning record in seven seasons at the University of Massachusetts. According to the lawsuits, he once told his Pitt players: "Every night I lay in bed I want to kill myself because of you."

He told one athlete, according to the legal complaint, "I don't like you as a player, but I'd let my son date you."

And he once divided the players by race and had them face off at practice, it said. Some of the women are now in counseling or therapy, and others have sought a red-shirt year of NCAA eligibility based on mental health problems, Holmes said.

The former players include Favor Ayodele of Spain, now at Grand Canyon University; Raeven Boswell, who left the team but stayed at Pitt to finish her degree; Isabella Perkins, now a student at Boston College; Jasmine Timmerson, now playing for Davidson College; and MaKayla Elmore and Brooklynn Miles, who had transferred to Pitt for their senior years.

Some of the players reached out repeatedly to Verdi's supervisors in the athletic department for help, to no avail, the lawsuits said.

The women seek an acknowledgment that the school violated their civil rights underTitle IX, which prohibits gender-based discrimination in education, along with the restoration of their school records and reputations, and compensatory and punitive damages.
