Indiana's Curt Cignetti cashes in on title run with 8-year extension worth $13.2 million per year

Indiana coach Curt Cignetti is cashing in onhis first national championship run— even more than initially expected.

Associated Press

Athletic department officials announced Monday thatthe two-time national coach of the yearhas signed a memorandum of understanding on an eight-year contract extension, paying him an annual average of $13.2 million —or an increase of about $1.6 million per yearfrom what school officials said Cignetti would earn when he first agreed to the extension in October.

School officials released the document Cignetti signed Feb. 4.

He joins Georgia coach Kirby Smart and LSU coach Lane Kiffin as the only active Football Bowl Subdivision coaches to receive paychecks of $13 million or more. The payouts could be even higher if Cignetti earns bonuses for winning Big Ten or national coach of the year honors in addition to playoff appearances and conference titles. The 64-year-old Cignetti already has said he hopes to retire at Indiana.

The new deal calls for a base salary of $500,000 per year through the 2033 season and a $1 million retention bonus on Nov. 30 of each year, starting this fall. The remaining portion of the $105.6 million will be collected from outside, promotional and marketing income.

Cignetti initially agreed to an eight-year extension worth $92.8 million — an annual average of $11.6 million — but university officials agreed to modify the deal as the Hoosiers remained undefeated and pursued the first football national championship in school history.

It's the third time Cignetti has received a raise since he took over the losingest program in FBS history in November 2024. All he's done since arriving is produce the two best seasons in school history while becoming one of college football's fan favorites for his quick quips and unique facial expressions. Players have embraced him, too, telling many of their favorite Cignetti tales.

Just ask tight end Riley Nowakowski, who recounted his favorite Cignetti story during the recent NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis.

"I think (Alberto Mendoza) was in the game, and he pulled like four runs in a row," Nowakowski said, referring to last season's victory over Illinois. "He kept pulling it, kept pulling it, kept pulling it, and then after the fourth time, it was a terrible read. So in the middle of the game, (Cignetti) tells our coach, 'Get (Alberto) over here.' Bert's like, 'What, it's the middle of a game, what are you doing?' And (Cignetti) goes, 'We're not paying you to run the ball, hand the ball off, right? We're up like 70 points, but he's pissed off, yelling at Bert, and (Cignetti) just turned back at me and gave me one of his little smiles, and he was just like, 'You like that now?'"

Cignetti wasted no time delivering on his promise to win after leading James Madison to the most successful transition from the Football Championship Subdivision to the FBS.

The son of Hall of Fame coach Frank Cignetti and a former Alabama assistant led Indiana to a school record 11 wins and its first College Football Playoff appearance in his first season with the Hoosiers.

Last season, he outdid that mark by producing the first 16-0 mark in major college football since the 1890s. The Hoosiers also won their first outright Big Ten crown since 1945, beat Miami on its home field to claim the national title and shed the label of having the most all-time losses in FBS history.

Mendoza's older brother, Fernando, also became the first Indiana player to win the Heisman Trophy and is expected to be the No. 1 overall pick in April's NFL draft.

The reward: A record nine players, including Mendoza and Nowakowski, attended the recent combine in Indianapolis while Cignetti got another pay raise and school officials continued to invest heavily in keeping the coach's staff together.

Offensive coordinator Mike Shanahan and defensive coordinator Bryant Haines each agreed to three-year contract extensions worth about $3 million per year in December, making them two of the highest-paid assistants in the FBS. Haines won this year's Broyles Award, which goes to the nation's top assistant coach.

Indiana will begin next season with the longest winning streak (16) and longest home winning streak (15) in the FBS. Cignetti has never lost a home game with the Hoosiers, who open defense of their league and national titles at home against North Texas on Sept. 5.

Real Madrid lose second straight and miss chance to close gap on Liga leader Barcelona

MADRID (AP) — Real Madrid lost a second straight La Liga match when a stunning volley from Martín Satriano gave Getafe a shock 1-0 win at Santiago Bernabeu Stadium on Monday.

The result prevented the capital club from cutting the four-point gap to leader Barcelona.

Getafe had lost all eight of its previous league encounters with Real Madrid and early saves from goalkeeper David Soria kept it from falling behind.

Soria turned over a shot from Arda Güler midway through the first half, not long after frustrating Vinicius Junior when he was through on goal.

Madrid had more of the ball but lacked punch up front and it paid a price for its profligacy six minutes before halftime when Getafe took the lead.

A hopeful cross from the right was headed clear but it fell to the feet of Satriano, who volleyed into the roof of the net from 20 meters out.

It was the second goal in three games for the Uruguayan, who joined on loan from Lyon during the last transfer window.

Madrid continued to dominate possession in the second half and Antonio Rüdiger and substitute Rodrygo were among those who came close to grabbing an equalizer.

But it could not find a way past Getafe's stuffy rearguard and an in-form Soria.

Madrid's task became even harder when Franco Mastantuono was sent off for dissent in stoppage time and although the numbers were evened up in the last minute when Getafe's Adrian Liso was also shown a red card it came too late to make any impact.

Getafe held on to secure a historic win, its first at the Santiago Bernabeu since 2008, and a vital three points in its bid to stay in La Liga.

"Coming here is always very difficult," Getafe defender Kiko Femenía told broadcaster DAZN. "We have to congratulate the team, we did a superb job at the back and we scored when had the chance. We might even have scored more on the counterattack."

They jumped three league places into 11th and were eight points above the relegation zone.

Stylist Law Roach confirms Tom Holland and Zendaya's marriage in interview

Zendaya and Tom Holland have always kept their private lives away from the prying eyes. After reportedly getting engaged last year, their fans eagerly awaited news of their marriage. The stars have not yet released any official statement about their marriage. But stylist Law Roach dropped the bombshell claim that the couple has gotten hitched. This has sparked fresh buzz around their relationship status.

Roach made the claims while talking with Access Hollywood on the red carpet at the 2026 Actor Awards on March 1. During the interview, Zendaya's longtime stylist said, "The wedding has already happened," teasing, "You missed it."

The surprised reporter confirmed, "Is that true?" and Roach replied, "It's very true" with a laugh before ending the chat.

Just days before, Zendaya was reportedly spotted wearing a gold band on her ring finger, sparking wedding rumors. Before that, she was seen wearing a diamond ring at the 2025 Golden Globes on January 5, sparking rumors that she and Holland had gotten engaged.

However, Tom Holland's father, Dominic, later shared details about the proposal on his Patreon account. He mentioned in his January 10 post that the actor "had purchased a ring."

As perPEOPLE, Dominic added his son "had spoken with Zendaya's father and had permission to propose to his daughter. Tom had everything planned out… When, where, how, what to say, what to wear." The proposal was even described as private and thoughtfully arranged.

Later, in September 2025, even Tom Holland broke his silence about his engagement. He sweetly corrected a reporter who had called Zendaya his girlfriend.

During the interview, when a reporter said, "I brought my daughter, and she got to meet your girlfriend." Holland laughed and corrected the reporter, referring to Zendaya as his "fiancée," putting all the speculation to rest.

Aces guard Chelsea Gray named 2026 Unrivaled MVP

During her 11-year WNBA career, Chelsea Gray has collected an impressive cabinet of championships and awards. She added yet another accomplishment to her collection Monday, as Gray was named the MVP of Unrivaled's 2026 season.

Gray, 33, turned in a fantastic season with Rose BC, averaging 24.2 points, 6.1 assists and 5.6 rebounds in 14 games played.

Despite Gray's success, Rose BC went just 6-8 in the regular season. That was good enough to secure a playoff spot, but the team's success in the postseason proved to be short lived. Rose BC was eliminated from the playoffs Saturday, losing to Breeze BC.

While that was a disappointing result — especially considering Rose BC won the Unrivaled 3-on-3 championship last season — it was still a highly effective Unrivaled season for Gray. In addition to winning the league's MVP award,Gray also won its 1-on-1 tournamentin February. That earned Gray an extra $200,000.

Gray can add that MVP award to an already impressive cabinet of awards. Over her WNBA career, Gray has made six All-Star teams, is a three-time All-Pro and a four-time WNBA champ. She also earned the finals MVP in 2022, when she averaged 18.3 points and six assists per game for the Aces.

Gray has come a long way since being selected by the Connecticut Sun with the No. 11 pick in the 2014 WNBA Draft. After missing her entire rookie season, Gray put up modest numbers over her next two years in a reserve role.

But once she earned a starting role in 2017, her career took off. Gray made three consecutive All-Star appearances over her next three seasons. She saw all of her stats increase, though managed to more than double her scoring output from her first two seasons.

All of that made Gray one of the WNBA's best players, something she's further established by helping the Aces win the WNBA championship in three out of the past four seasons.
