ATM jackpotting attacks surge across the US

Youswipe your cardand enter your PIN. You grab your cash and head out the door. It feels routine and secure. Most of us never give it a second thought. However, some ATMs are quietly being turned into cash machines for criminals.

Fox News

The Federal Bureau of Investigation recently issued a cybersecurity alert about a rise inmalware attacks targeting ATMs.These incidents are known as jackpotting attacks. In simple terms, hackers force machines to spit out money on command.

The numbers are growing. Since 2020, nearly 1,900 attacks have been reported. More than a third occurred just last year. In 2025 alone, losses have already exceeded $20 million. So what is really happening inside these machines, and why is the threat accelerating now?

How Debit Card Fraud Can Happen Without Using The Card

How ATM jackpotting attacks work

Read On The Fox News App

This is not a Hollywood hacking scene. In many cases, attackers use generic keys to open the ATM's maintenance cabinet. Once inside, they remove the storage drive. Then theyload malware onto itor swap it with a compromised one.

After rebooting the machine, the malicious software takes control. One of the most widely used tools is a malware strain called Ploutus. It targets software known as XFS, which ATMs use to communicate with bank networks and authorize transactions.

Instead of asking the bank for permission, the malware overrides that process. It sends its own commands to the machine. The result? The ATM dispenses cash without a card, without an account and without a legitimate transaction. That is jackpotting.

Here is the uncomfortable truth. Many ATMs run on aging versions of Windows. Some machines have even displayed Windows 7 login screens. That operating system was released in 2009 and officially discontinued years ago.

Outdated software creates opportunity. If attackers find a vulnerability in the Windows operating system, they can exploit it across different ATM brands and financial networks. The FBI says these attacks are not tied to one specific bank or ATM manufacturer. Instead, they target common weaknesses shared across systems.

That makes the problem much bigger. And with hundreds of thousands of ATMs deployed across the U.S., upgrading and securing every machine will take time.

Feds Charge 87 Individuals In Massive Atm 'Jackpotting' Operation Linked To Tren De Aragua Gang

A person uses the pin pad on an ATM.

The FBI has outlined several defensive steps for financial institutions:

  • Monitor ATMs for unauthorized files and suspicious executables

  • Disable USB ports to prevent malware loading

  • Replace generic locks with keypad systems

  • Add secondary alarms and enhanced physical security

These are practical fixes. But rolling them out nationwide is a slow process. Meanwhile, attackers continue to look for weak targets.

You might be thinking this sounds like a bank problem, not a personal one. Technically, consumers are not the direct victims in these cases. UnlikeBitcoin ATM scamsthat have cost individuals hundreds of millions, jackpotting attacks hit financial institutions. However, there is a ripple effect.

When banks lose money, insurance companies pay claims. Eventually, those costs show up somewhere. Higher fees. Increased service charges. Stricter policies. In the end, everyday customers absorb the impact. Cybercrime rarely stays contained.

How To Safely View Your Bank And Retirement Accounts Online

How to protect yourself when using ATMs

While ATMjackpotting attacksprimarily target banks, you can still take smart steps to protect yourself when using cash machines.

Choose machines inside bank branches or in busy areas with foot traffic. These locations are more likely to be monitored and maintained.

Criminals need physical access to tamper with machines. High traffic areas during regular business hours reduce that risk.

If a machine suddenly reboots, freezes or behaves strangely, stop immediately. Do not insert your card. Report the issue to the bank right away.

Check for loose panels, exposed wiring or unusual attachments near the card slot or keypad. If something looks off, use a different machine.

Shield your PIN with your hand as you type. This protects you from hidden cameras and shoulder surfers who may try to capture your code.

Enable text or app notifications for withdrawals and account activity. Instant alerts help you act quickly if anything unexpected appears.

Even though jackpotting bypasses customer accounts, fraud tactics evolve. Review your transactions often so you can catch unauthorized charges early.

Identity theft protection services can provide alerts about unusual financial activity across your accounts. Think of it as an added layer of awareness rather than a fix for ATM malware. See my tips and best picks on Best Identity Theft Protection atCyberguy.com.

Many banks offer cardless access through secure mobile apps. This reduces exposure to skimming devices and physical tampering.

Install updates promptly to ensure you have the latest security patches and protections.

Staying alert lowers your risk and reinforces good habits, even when attackers are targeting financial institutions rather than individual customers.

ATM jackpotting attacks reveal something important. Even familiar machines can hide modern vulnerabilities. Most of us rarely think about the software running inside a cash dispenser. Yet those systems rely on the same operating foundations as home and office computers. When they fall behind on updates, criminals notice. The FBI alert is not a reason to panic. It is a reminder that digital security touches nearly every part of daily life, even the simple act of withdrawing cash.

Judge cites 'stand your ground' law in clearing 3 more Florida officers in shooting of a UPS driver

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A South Florida judge on Monday cleared three more police officers of wrongdoing in the shooting death of aUPS driver who had been taken hostageduring a 2019 robbery.

Associated Press

Broward Circuit Judge Ernest Kollra ruled that Miami-Dade police officers Richard Santiesteban, Leslie Lee and Rodolfo Mirabal — who had been charged with manslaughter in the death of UPS driver Frank Ordonez — could not be prosecuted because Florida's "stand your ground" law justified the shooting. The same judge cleared officerJose Mateoin September for the same reason.

The Broward State Attorney's Office said it will appeal all four rulings.

"Immunity from prosecution is not the same as a defense presented to a jury from this community," the state attorney's statement said. "It is our belief that Stand Your Ground immunity does not apply in matters involving innocent bystanders, like Frank Ordonez and Richard Cutshaw, who presented no danger to officers. In this incident, two innocent men were killed, and the lives of numerous other innocent bystanders were endangered."

Cutshaw was also killed in the barrage of gunfire that afternoon.

Ordonez, 27, had been delivering packages in Miami-Dade County on Dec. 5, 2019, when police said two would-be jewelry store robbers abducted him and forced him to drive from the scene. A rush-hour police chase ended at a busy intersection in neighboring Broward County.

Prosecutors said Mateo fired the shots that killed Ordonez. The two robbers and a passerby were also killed in a hail of gunfire at an intersection in Miramar, Florida.

Footage from a body camera that was played in court showed Mateo's pursuit of the UPS truck that afternoon. His partner could be seen in the passenger seat with a long gun drawn. The video also showed Mateo approaching the UPS truck. He emptied his firearm's magazine, reloaded and then pulled Ordonez from the vehicle.

The judge ruled the officers had reason to believe deadly force was necessary to end the confrontation.

The four officers are currently suspended from the their jobs.

North Korea's Kim pushes new five-year economic plan, nuclear deterrent at parliament session

SEOUL, March 24 (Reuters) - North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said his country would permanently strengthen its nuclear forces and treat South Korea as its most hostile state, as he set out policy priorities in a speech ‌to parliament, state media KCNA reported on Tuesday.

Kim said Pyongyang's status as a nuclear‑armed state was irreversible and expanding a "self‑defensive ‌nuclear deterrent" was essential to national security, regional stability and economic development.

He rejected the idea that nuclear disarmament could be exchanged for economic benefits or security guarantees, saying North Korea had already proven that maintaining nuclear forces while pursuing development was the correct strategic choice.

"The current world reality, where the dignity and rights of sovereign states are mercilessly violated by unilateral force and violence, clearly teaches what the true guarantee of a state's existence and peace is," Kim said in the address on Monday to the Supreme People's Assembly, the communist-run country's rubber-stamp legislature.

Nuclear weapons had deterred war and allowed the state to ‌focus resources on economic growth, construction and living standards, he added.

Analysts in South Korea said the comments amounted to an indirect critique of U.S. military action against Iran.

"These circumstances have reinforced Pyongyang's long-standing argument that nuclear weapons are essential to deter external intervention and safeguard regime survival," said Yang Moo-jin, a professor at the University of North Korea Studies.

Kim further accused the United States and its allies of destabilising the region by deploying strategic nuclear assets near the Korean peninsula, but said North Korea no longer viewed itself as a country under threat and possessed the power to threaten others if necessary.

MOST HOSTILE STATE

Kim said South Korea had been "recognised as the most hostile state" and warned Seoul that ‌any attempt to infringe on North Korea's sovereignty would be met "mercilessly without hesitation or restraint".

The comments are the latest sign of Pyongyang's hardening stance toward Seoul since Kim dropped decades of policy seeking peaceful reunification and moved to redefine relations with the South as those between two hostile states.

Analysts have been watching for any sign that this shift had been codified in law. The state media report did not elaborate.

Lim Eul-chul of Kyungnam University said the language "effectively strips South Korea of any remaining status as a compatriot nation", and goes beyond past rhetoric aimed ‌at isolating Seoul diplomatically.

Instead, it marked a "declaration denying South Korea's very legitimacy as a counterpart", he said.

FIVE-YEAR PLAN

Alongside security policy, Kim outlined economic priorities, calling on officials to fully implement a new five-year development plan focused on modernising industry, boosting electricity and coal production, increasing food output and expanding housing construction nationwide.

North Korea is one of ‌the world's poorest countries, with a heavily sanctioned economy and chronic shortages that have left much of its population dependent on state rations and informal markets, according to international assessments.

The parliamentary session adopted amendments to the constitution, and passed legislation endorsing the new five‑year economic plan, KCNA said.

Lawmakers also approved a 2026 state budget that raises defence spending to 15.8% of total expenditure, with funding explicitly ‌allocated to expanding nuclear deterrence and war-fighting capabilities, according to a separate budget report released at the session.

The assembly heard a congratulatory message from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who praised Kim's leadership and pledged to deepen a comprehensive strategic partnership between Moscow and Pyongyang.

Arizona State hires longtime Saint Mary's head coach Randy Bennett to replace Bobby Hurley

Arizona State has found its replacement for Bobby Hurley.

Yahoo Sports

The Sun Devils hired Saint Mary's Randy Bennett as their next head coach on Monday afternoon, the school announced. The sides reportedly reached a five-year deal.

"It was going to take a special situation for us to leave Saint Mary's, and I am energized, driven, and focused on taking over Sun Devil basketball, a program I am very familiar with and grew up watching," Bennettsaid in a statement. "We are in the best basketball conference in the nation and I look forward to the opportunity and am excited to meet everyone who wants to help this program reach our goals in the new landscape. My staff and I will be ready for the challenge."

Saint Mary's didn't waste any time, either. The Gaels promoted assistant coach Mickey McConnell to replace Bennett almost immediately. McConnell played at Saint Mary's himself under Bennett, and has been an assistant there since 2019.

Bennett, 63, has spent his entire head coaching career at Saint Mary's, where he was first hired in 2001. He pretty quickly turned the program into a mid-major powerhouse. The Gaels won seven regular season WCC titles under his watch, including the last four, and they reached the NCAA tournament 12 times. Before he was hired, Saint Mary's had only been to the NCAA tournament three times in program history.

The Gaels have won at least 20 games in every season dating back to 2007, save for the shortened COVID-19 campaign of 2020-21. They went 27-6 this season and reached the NCAA tournament, though they fell to Texas A&M in the first round.

Bennett, who is an Arizona native, will attempt to revive the Sun Devils' program after several rough seasons under Hurley in recent years. The team missed the NCAA tournament in each of the past three seasons, and just barely had a winning record this season, with a 17-16 finish.

While he got them to the NCAA tournament three times, and the team even climbed as high as No. 3 in the national rankings briefly during the 2017-18 campaign, Arizona State failed to win a NCAA tournament beyond the First Four and never had a seed better than a No. 11 seed under Hurley's watch.Arizona State let Hurley's contract expireat the end of their season, ending his 11-year tenure there

Robot umpires are coming to MLB. Here's how they work

NEW YORK (AP) —Robot umpiresare coming to the big leagues this year.

Associated Press

The Automated Ball/Strike System will be introduced in the form of a challenge system in which the human umpire makes each call, which can be appealed tothe computer. Robot umpires have been tested in the minor leagues since 2019, with recent testing done at Triple-A since 2022, MLB spring training last year and at the 2025 All-Star Game in Atlanta.

Here's what to know about MLB's robot umps.

How does the Automated Ball-Strike System work?

Stadiums are outfitted with cameras that track each pitch and judge whether it crossed home plate within the strike zone. In early testing, umpires wore ear buds and would hear "ball" or "strike," then relay that to players and fans with traditional hand signals.

The challenge system adds a wrinkle. Human umps call every pitch, but each team has the ability to challenge two calls per game. Teams that waste their challenges get one additional challenge in each extra inning. A team retains its challenge if successful, similar to the regulations for big league teams with video reviews, which were first used for home run calls in August 2008 andwidely expanded to many calls for the 2014 season.

Only a batter, pitcher or catcher may challenge a call, signaling with the tap of a helmet or cap; and assistance from the dugout is not allowed. A challenge must be made within 2 seconds, and the graphic of the pitch and strike zone is shown on the scoreboard and broadcast feed. The umpire then announces the updated count.

Challenges during spring training last year averaged 13.8 seconds.

What is the technology?

A Hawk-Eye pose-tracking system of cameras tracks pitches and whether they are within a strike zone based on the height of each batter, who is measured without shoes. Each player will be measured for his strike zone starting at 10 a.m. to noon on a rolling basis during spring training — the time of day to maintain uniformity, becauseheight shortens later in the day. Data will be verified by the Southwest Research Institute. MLB estimated the calibration process at less than one minute for each player.

While the strike zone actually called by big league umpires tends to be oval in shape, the ABS strike zone is a rectangle, as in the rule book.

Developing a consensus on what a computer strike zonewas an issue.

So what is the MLB strike zone?

MLB has changed the shape of the ABS strike zone several times.

It started with a 19-inch width in 2022, then dropped it to 17 inches — matching the width of home plate. Narrowing the strike zone led to an increase in walks and only small changes in strikeout rates.

The top of the strike zone was 51% of a batter's height in 2022 and 2023, then raised to 53.5% in 2024 after pitchers complained. The bottom of the strike zone has been 27% since 2022 after initially being set at 28%. A batter's stance is not taken into account.

ABS makes the ball/strike decision at the midpoint of the plate, 8 1/2 inches from the front and 8 1/2 inches from the back. The contrasts with the rule book zone called by umpires, which says the zone is a cube and a strike is a pitch that crosses any part. Big league umpires call roughly 94% of pitches correctly, according to UmpScorecards.

Where has ABS been tested?

ABS, which utilizes Hawk-Eye cameras, has been tested in the minor leagues since 2019. The independent Atlantic Leaguetrialed the systemat its 2019 All-Star Game and MLB installed the technology for that's yearArizona Fall League of top prospects. The ABS was tried ateight of nine ballparks of the Low-A Southeast League in 2021, thenmoved up to Triple-A in 2022.

At Triple-A at the start of the 2023 season, half the games used the robots for ball/strike calls and half had a human making decisionssubject to appealsby teams to the ABS.

MLB switched Triple-A to an all-challenge system on June 26, 2024, then used the challenge system last year at13 spring training ballparks hosting 19 teamsfor a total of 288 exhibition games. Teams won 52.2% of their ball/strike challenges (617 of 1,182) challenges.

At last year's MLBAll-Star Game, four of five challenges of plate umpire Dan Iassogna's calls were successful.

How successful are teams at challenging?

Success rate have hovered around 50% in the minors. At Triple-A last season, the success rate dropped to 49.5% from 50.6%. Defenses — usually catchers — have been more successful, winning 53.7% of challenges compared to 45% by batters. Challenges increased to 4.2 from 3.9 per game.

In 2024 at Triple-A, just 1.6% of first pitches were challenged, but the figure increased to 3.9% for two-strike pitches, 5.2% for three-ball pitches and 8.2% for full counts.

Challenge percentages were higher later in the game. While 1.9% of pitches were challenged in the first three innings, 2.5% were challenged from the fourth through the sixth, 2.8% in the seventh and eighth and 3.6% in the ninth.
