Boston College hires UConn assistant Luke Murray, son of actor Bill Murray, as basketball coach

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (AP) — Boston College hired UConn assistant Luke Murray on Thursday as coach of a slumping men's basketball program that has gone 17 years without an appearance in theNCAA Tournament.

Associated Press

Murray, the son of actor Bill Murray, will be a first-time head coach. He replaces Earl Grant, who was firedearlier this monthafter the Eagles had a losing record in four of his five seasons. Grant went 72-92 overall and 30-67 in Atlantic Coast Conference games.

In five years with UConn under coach Dan Hurley, Murray has been a part of two national championship teams, with Bill Murray often in attendance at games. The Huskies play Michigan State on Friday in theSweet 16.

"In Luke Murray, we have found a leader who does not just understand the modern landscape of college basketball, he has helped define it," Boston College athletic director Blake James said. "His role in building a national championship caliber program, his sophisticated offensive vision, and his relentless pursuit of excellence make him the perfect fit."

Prior to UConn, Murray spent three years each as an assistant at Louisville and Xavier. He also had stints on staffs at Towson, Wagner, Arizona, Post and Quinnipiac. The 2007 graduate of Fairfield will be the 14th head coach in Boston College program history.

The Eagles have been buried in the supersized ACC for more than a decade, with a 10th-place finish in 2022-23 their highest since the league expanded from 12 to 15 teams in the 2013-14 season. They were second-to-last in the newly expanded 18-team conference in each of the last two years.

Savannah Guthrie Reveals Details of Her Mother's Kidnapping

Savannah Guthrie is speaking out abouther mother's disappearanceas the search stretches on. In her first interview since her mother, Nancy Guthrie, went missing, Guthrie spoke through tears to ask for help.

Katie Couric Media Savannah Guthrie Reveals Details of Her Mother's Kidnapping

"Someone needs to do the right thing," she told her formerTODAYco-host Hoda Kotb in the first of a three-part interview that premiered on Thursday. "We are in agony. It is unbearable."

The emotional plea comes as the search extends into months. Nancy, 84, was reported missing on February 1 after she failed to show up at a friend's home to watch a streaming church service.Authorities believe she was abductedfrom her Arizona home.

Here are the key moments from her interview.

Guthrie recalls the moment she learned her mother was missing — and the chaotic days that followed

She told Kotb she got the call on February 1 — a moment she says she'll never forget.

"And my sister called me. I said, 'Is everything OK?' And she said, 'No. Mom's missing,'" Guthrie said. "And I said, 'What? What are you talking about?' She said, 'She's gone.' And she was in a panic. I was in a panic."

Guthrie said the first signs that something unimaginable had happened came when family members arrived at her mother's Arizona home and found the back doors propped open. Inside, there were troubling details: her mother's phone, purse, and medications had been left behind. "How is it possible that we are having to make a video speaking to a kidnapper, who took an 84-year-old woman in the dead of night, in her pajamas, with no shoes, without her medicine?" she said of the attempts to reach the captors via social media posts featuring her and her siblings pleading.

She noted that Nancy had been living with "tremendous pain" that limited her mobility, which initially led the family to wonder if it had been a medical emergency. "We thought maybe paramedics had come because the back doors were open — but her phone was there, her purse was there, all her things. And it just didn't make any sense."

In the weeks that followed, Guthrie remained in Arizona. She said her family was forced to move from one home to another as attention on the case intensified. "We had to move houses many times because people came and not everyone is respectful," she said.

At one point, they had to leave in the middle of the night. Eventually, they found a place to stay out of view — but the toll lingered. "Those days are a blur," she said. "Crying and praying."

The moment caught on surveillance that still haunts her

One of the most unsettling moments in the case came when the FBI released doorbell camera images from outside Nancy's home. Shared 10 days after she was reported missing, the clip shows a masked, armed man approaching the door before appearing to tamper with the camera.

Investigators said they worked with "private sector partners" to recover the recording after initially determining the doorbell system had been disconnected around 1:47 a.m. the night Nancy disappeared.

Guthrie recalled seeing it for the first time in her interview with Kotb.

"It's just absolutely terrifying," she said. "And I can't imagine that is who she saw standing over her bed. I can't."

The images have continued to stay with her. "I wake up every night in the middle of the night," she said. "And in the darkness, I imagine her terror. And it is unthinkable, but those thoughts demand to be thought."

She added that she's grateful investigators were able to recover it — both for what it may reveal and for what it helps put to rest.

"I'm glad and grateful to the investigators and the technology companies that were able to find that video to, I hope, at least with people of good heart and compassion, stop the irresponsible and cruel speculation that had started to swirl," Guthrie said.

She fears her public profile may have made her mother a target

Though investigators have not publicly identified a suspect or motive, Guthrie told Kotb that her brother, Camron, believed right away that their mother had been "kidnapped for ransom."

"Even on the phone when I called him, he knew," the TODAY co-anchor said.

That possibility has forced Guthrie to confront a painful question: whether her visibility as one of the most recognizable faces on television may have played a role.

"Is it because she's my mom and somebody thought, 'Oh, that lady has money — we can make a quick buck?' I mean, that would make sense," she said. "But we don't know."

The thought is "too much to bear," she added. "To think that I brought this to her bedside. That it's because of me."

At one point in the interview, her grief turned inward. "I'd just say I'm so sorry, Mommy," she said in the interview. "I'm so sorry. I'm sorry to my sister and my brother and my kids and my nephew and Tommy, my brother-in-law. I'm just — I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry. If it is me, I'm so sorry. I'm so sorry."

Guthrie says most ransom notes were likely hoaxes — but two stood out

In the weeks after her mother disappeared, multiple ransom notes surfaced, though she believes most were not credible.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department and the FBI said in February that they were investigating multiple ransom notes, but have not indicated whether any have been linked to a suspect in Nancy's disappearance.

"There are a lot of different notes, I think, that came," Guthrie said. "And I think most of them, it's my understanding, are not real. And I didn't see them. But a person who would send a fake ransom note [to a family in pain] really has to look deeply at themselves."

Still, she says two messages felt different — and were taken seriously enough to warrant a response. "I believe the ones we received and responded to… I tend to believe those are real."

And despite so much uncertainty, she says her mother still feels close. When Kotb noted that Guthrie refers to her mom in the present tense, she responded, "she is present tense to me."

She spoke to God about her mother's whereabouts

Guthrie has relied on prayer and her faith in this time, and she told Kotb about a powerful religious experience she had after her mother's kidnapping: God spoke to her. She asked where her mother was, and she recalls God responding, "'You know where she is. She's with me.' So whether she's on this earth still, or whether she is in heaven, I know where she is. I know who she's with."

She shut down rumors that her family was somehow involved

In the days after Nancy was reported missing, online speculation began to surface, including unfounded claims involving family members. Guthrie addressed those rumors directly, describing them as "unbearable" and underscoring how they've compounded an already devastating situation.

"It piles pain upon pain. There are no words," she told Kotb, visibly emotional.

She went on to defend her loved ones, emphasizing the care and protection surrounding her mother before her disappearance. "No one took better care of my mom than my sister and brother-in-law. And no one protected my mom more than my brother," she said. "We love her — she is our shining light. She's our matriarch. She's all we have."

Guthrie said her focus now is on getting answers, and holding onto hope that someone will eventually come forward.

"People have worked tirelessly, tirelessly," she said. "And we see that. But we need answers. We cannot be at peace without knowing and someone can do the right thing. It is never too late to do the right thing. And our hearts are focused on that."

White House AI czar Sacks to step down, moves to advisory role

WASHINGTON, March 26 (Reuters) - White Houseartificial intelligenceand crypto czar David Sacks is stepping down from his ‌role, saying in an interview on Bloomberg Television on ‌Thursday he had reached the end of his time as a special government employee.

Sacks said he is joining President Donald Trump's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology, a federal advisory committee composed of industry and academic experts. As co-chair of the body he ‌would be able to make recommendations on a broader range of technology issues beyond AI, he said.

Sacks said earlier this month the U.S. should "declare victory and get out" of the Iran war, a rare instance of a prominent figure in the Trump administration calling for an exit from the conflict.

Sacks has been a ‌notable figure in the White House since Trump began his second term. A longtime Silicon Valley entrepreneur and investor, he is a partner at Craft Ventures, the firm he co-founded in 2017.

Public Health Alert Issued For Ground Beef Due To Metal Contamination

If you haveground beefstored away in your freezer, it's time to check those labels. White Oak Pastures Radically Traditional Farming Grassfed Ground Beef is the subject of apublic health alertin five states, as well as in Washington, D.C., due to metal contamination.

Delish ground beef

The issue was discovered after the company received multiple consumer complaints about metal fragments in the beef. The ground beef, which is no longer available for purchase, was produced on February 26, 2026, and has a sell-by date of March 19, 2026. However, an alert was issued because consumers could still have the meat stored in their freezers.

Raw ground beef has a rather shortshelf life, lasting only one to two days in the refrigerator. Conversely, ground beef can last up to four months in the freezer, so it's very likely that the general public has this stored for later use.

The affected beef was sold in 16-ounce vacuum-packedplastic packagingand bears the establishment number EST 34729. It was shipped to a distributor, and to Mom's Organic Markets retail locations, in D.C., Massachusetts, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Virginia.

To date, there have been no confirmed reports of injury associated with the consumption of the ground beef; however, those with concerns should contact a health care provider. Consumers with the affected beef in their freezers are urged to either throw it away or return it to their place of purchase.

Pentagon weighs diverting Ukraine military aid to the Middle East, Washington Post reports

March 26 (Reuters) - The Pentagon is weighing whether to redirect weapons originally meant for Ukraine to the Middle ‌East, as the war in Iran strains supplies of ‌some of the U.S. military's most critical munitions, the Washington Post reported Thursday, citing three people familiar with the matter.

Reuters

The weapons that could be redirected include air defense interceptor missiles purchased through a NATO initiative launched last year, under which partner countries buy U.S. arms ‌for Kyiv, the report said.

The consideration comes as U.S. operations in the region intensify. Admiral Brad Cooper, the Central Command chief leading U.S. forces in the Middle East, on Wednesday said the U.S. had hit over 10,000 targets inside Iran and was on track to limit Iran's ability to project power outside its borders.

A ‌Pentagon spokesperson told the newspaper that the Defense Department would "ensure that U.S. forces and those of our allies and partners have what they need to fight and win."

In response to a query about the report, a NATO official said members of the ‌alliance and its partners continue to contribute to its Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) programme that funds the supply of U.S. arms for Kyiv.

"Equipment is ‌continuously flowing into Ukraine," the official added. "The amount pledged to PURL so far is of several billion U.S. dollars and we expect more contributions to follow."

The Pentagon and the U.S. State ‌Department did not immediately respond to Reuters' requests for comment.

Kyler Murray-Vikings marriage isn't the cleanest fit ever, but there's intrigue and potential abound

Kyler Murray signing with the Minnesota Vikingson a one-year deal is one of those NFL fever dream moments that creates a subplot that would have been unfathomable even half a year ago. The former No. 1 overall pick joins Kevin O'Connell and the Vikings — who are fresh off a disastrous debut campaign for their2024 first-round selection J.J. McCarthy, and the recentfiring of their general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah— in a union that still feels so strange to think of.

Yahoo Sports

It's also a marriage that I like the more I've pieced together the combination of an undersized, shotgun-heavy, pocket-breaking quarterback with one of the more traditional attack play-callers. And I like it more than just from a sheer morbid curiosity sense.

Draft your Yahoo Fantasy Baseball team for the 2026 MLB Season

To start, Murray is way better than McCarthy. Even at Murray's absolute worst, that is just an objective fact. Murray's worst is also better than Vikings backup Carson Wentz's play this decade, and Murray has been better than a lot of quarterbacks throughout his career while wilting away with an Arizona Cardinals organization that's on to another head coach and constantly rates among the league's worst in the NFLPA report cards.Call of Dutyrelease date memesor not, Murray has been a firmly league-average or better starter throughout his career.

Kyler Murray's size and play style have their advantages — and limitations

He is an imperfect player. Much has always been made about his height, but he actually has solid bulk and is of course a great athlete. Since entering the NFL in 2019, Murray ranks first in QB hit rate (sacks + knockdowns) with just a 9.4% mark. He has had some injuries crop up, but he does do a good job of getting rid of the ball (sometimes a bit too often) and avoids hits and sacks more often than is perceived. Murray's sack rate for his career is right at league average, about the same as Kirk Cousins. and he also has some creation ability to help open up plays beyond the concepts called.

There are drawbacks to Murray's size and play style, though. Murray's height does limit the areas of the field he can comfortably operate as a thrower, and he can bail from the pocket a bit too often when he is not comfortable with the concept or defensive disguise. He's also long been in shotgun-heavy offenses, from high school ball to college to even the NFL under his first Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury. Murray has primarily operated in offenses steeped in traditional Air Raid principles (i.e. shotgun almost always). Murray had the highest rate of shotgun snaps among quarterbacks from 2019 to 2022, hovering around 90% of the Cardinals' snaps on early downs. From 2023-2025 under offensive coordinator Drew Petzing, it hovered around 70% of the time on early downs.

How will Kyler Murray fit into Kevin O'Connell's Vikings offense?

What makes Murray's fit with the Vikings so fascinating is how his play style will merge with O'Connell's modus operandi: getting under center and chucking it. Since O'Connell became Minnesota's head coach in 2022, 56.4% of the Vikings' early down snaps have been under center, which ranks second over that time period. They also rank second in the amount of play action from under center they ran over that time period. Murray has had 180 snaps of under-center play-action concepts since he's entered the NFL. The Vikings have averaged 164 per season since 2022.

O'Connell likes to attack vertically with play fakes to not only try and draw up defenders, but to also vary up protections so his quarterbacks can stand in the pocket and attack downfield. Cousins was a tough player that was willing to stand and deliver on throws, even if he lacked the high-end arm or athleticism to be considered an upper-tier quarterback. Sam Darnold then came in and played like Cousins withSam Raimi directinghim.

Murray, meanwhile, had a few plays of being able to operate on these concepts, often on the move on bootlegs and at times bailing from the pocket a bit too early. But there are flashes of excellent throws from the pocket by Murray after he turns his back to the defense. O'Connell has seldom run play action out of the shotgun, so this will have to be incorporated in Minnesota.

Murray is best working to the outside and down the field. He has a nice knack for layering throws with touch, but is comfortable doing it more when he can throw out in space on things like crossers and overs and outbreaking routes. His partnership with Marvin Harrison Jr. was often frustrating because of Harrison Jr.'s role in the offense features in-breaking dig routes that Murray would neglect to throw to at all. (Murray ranks 40th out of 45 qualifying quarterbacks since entering the NFL in 2019 in throws of 10-22 yards and between the numbers.)

Here is Murray's target heat map from the 2024 and 2025 seasons, with a handy circle placed to focus on over the middle of the field. Notice the blue incomplete dots down the sideline and the lack of dots over the middle.

And here is Sam Darnold's heat map in 2024 when he was the Vikings' starting quarterback:

Darnold is a fellow talented but imperfect quarterback who excelled and used it to launch toeven greater success in Seattlethis past season. He has always been willing to attack the middle, sometimes to his own detriment, but that willingness is what made Shanahan (and Kubiak) coaches so fond of him operating in their under-center, play-action, chuck-it-between-the-hashes-like-there's-no-tomorrow offense.

Murray also went from chucking deep go balls to becoming more and more of an underneath thrower under Petzing. Sometimes frustratingly so. He went from 33.3% of his throws traveling 10 or more air yards in 2021 (which ranked 10th that season), to just 26.7% last season (which ranked 37th). His chemistry with Cardinals tight end Trey McBride is a part of that, but perhaps the rest of the Arizona receiving crops, which featured plenty of size but perhaps not a ton of deep speed, limited some of that. But Murray was a great deep ball thrower earlier in his career, even if the routes he likes to throw can be limited in scope.

Kyler Murray's play in Arizona was better than it seemed

Murray's underlying statistics, even with his imperfections, have still pointed to an effective (if limited) player.

Murray ranks 17th in dropback success rate since entering the NFL. His 46% rate is the exact same as Justin Herbert. It's above names like Aaron Rodgers, Baker Mayfield, Jalen Hurts, Trevor Lawrence, Sam Darnold, Russell Wilson, CJ Stroud and Bo Nix. He ranks 18th in EPA per play. He's an effective scrambler and doesn't actually scramble as much people perceive, although there is an uptick when he isn't comfortable with what's going on around him.

He's touched borderline top-10 play at the position (an arbitrary thing, but you get the idea). But he's done it in two wildly different offenses and his improvement for most of 2024 was a fun subplot for the season. He ranked 13th in EPA, eighth in success rate and ninth in QBR (a career high) in an offense that asked him to do more traditional operation at the position than he had ever done in his career.
