Yankees right-hander Luis Gil in line to join team in mid-April

SEATTLE (AP) — Luis Gil, who did not make the New York Yankees' starting rotation out of spring training, is in line to join the team in mid-April after he makes a start for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday.

Boone said Gil recently threw in Florida at the team's spring training complex, and is headed north to join New York's top affiliate.

"He'll throw his bullpen with Triple-A, make his next start," Boone said, "and then be in line for the next one with us."

New York decided to use a four-man rotation to open the season. Gil, the 2024 American League Rookie of the Year, ended up as the odd man out after going 2-1 with a 4.66 ERA in six spring training starts.

Last year, Gil went 4-1 with a 3.32 ERA across 11 starts in an injury-filled season. He started last year on the injured list because of a high-grade lat strain, and did not make his season debut until Aug. 3.

Rodón update

Boone said left-hander Carlos Rodón,who experienced right hamstring tightness while going through his throwing program Tuesday, threw again on Wednesday. Rodón threw off a mound, and will travel to New York for the Yankees' home opener on Friday against the Miami Marlins.

"He'll be there for opening day and stuff," Boone said. "So, we'll see how the next few days go as far as when he gets back going to his side (session) and the next live (batting practice) and all that. So, we'll have a better idea over the next few days."

Boone added that no tests have been scheduled for Rodón, who also underwent surgery last October to remove a bone spur and loose bodies from his left elbow.

On Tuesday, Boone said Rodón most recently threw live batting practice, which consisted of three simulated innings and 50 pitches. Boone said Rodón's next outing was scheduled to be a rehab start for Double-A Somerset, but that could get pushed back.

But on Wednesday, Boone was more optimistic about Rodón's hamstring injury.

"It does seem to be a minor thing," Boone said, "but, we'll have a better feel over the next couple days when our trainers here get a look at him."

Italian coast guard finds 19 migrants dead and rescues 58 from dinghy off Lampedusa

ROME (AP) — Nineteen people were found dead and 58 rescued alive by the Italian coast guard, which intercepted a dinghy filled with migrants that was in distress about 80 nautical miles from the southern Italian island of Lampedusa on Tuesday night.

The Italian coast guard operated in the Libyan search and rescue area amid rough weather conditions, a spokesman said on Wednesday.

"We were the only one able to intervene, as there were no other ships or rescue teams in the area. Sea conditions were pretty extreme, with waves of more than 6-7 meters (20-23 feet)," said coast guard spokesman Roberto D'Arrigo.

D'Arrigo said the migrants had probably departed from Libya and the victims likely died of hypothermia, but the cause of the deaths still need to be verified.

The survivors were brought to Lampedusa after a 10-hour trip and are now in the care of local health services, the coast guard said.

The tiny island of Lampedusa is the main entry point to Europe for migrantscrossing the Mediterranean Seafrom North Africa, with thousands dying during the perilous journey.

Most of the deaths have been attributed to small boats setting off from the coasts of Tunisia and Libya.

Themost recent deadly shipwreckoff Lampedusa happened in August last year, when a boat carrying nearly 100 migrants capsized in international waters, killing at least 26 people.

An FBI technical team is in Cuba to investigate aFebruary shootoutbetween Cuban soldiers and the crew of a boat from Florida, CNN has learned from two sources familiar with the visit.

The rare visit by US law enforcement to the communist-run island comes amid some of the highest tensions in years between the US and Cuba and after the Trump administration said Cuban officials need to radically alter their system of government.

According to Cuban officials, a boat with 10 people aboard sailed to the island from Florida in late February to carry out "an attempt to overthrow the government."

Upon arrival, the boaters engaged in a shootout withCuban border guardsthat left four of the boaters dead and one of the Cuban soldiers wounded. A fifth boater later died of his injuries, Cuban officials said.

Cuban officials said they found a cache of assault rifles, ammunition, bulletproof vests and Molotov cocktails on the boat.

US officials said in February that at least one of those who died and one survivor were US citizens. The five survivors face terrorism charges on the island. Though Cuban officials initially identified all the men as Cuban nationals, the island's government typically does not recognize dual nationalities and treats anyone born in Cuba as a Cuban citizen.

In March, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel said FBI agents would be allowed to carry out an investigation on the island in cooperation with Cuban officials.

A US official told CNN that the American investigators are not making decisions based on information provided by Cuba but that they will independently verify what happened during the incident.

The official said that in making decisions about the case, the United States will seek to protect US interests and US citizens involved in the incident.

CNN has reached out to the FBI for comment.

Serving as the first-base umpire in Milwaukee for the Brewers' March 31 game against theTampa Bay Rays, Bucknor had one of the most blatant blown calls you'll ever see overturned by replay, leading to similar amused reactions in both dugouts.

The play occurred in the sixth inning with Milwaukee leading 4-2 and first baseman Jake Bauers at the plate. Bauers' line drive went off the glove of Rays second baseman Ben Williamson, who then threw wildly to first base.

The Rays retrieved the ball and tagged Bauers, whom Bucknor called out for failing to touch first base.

As the television announcers pointed out, Bucknor didn't even seem to be looking at Bauers' foot as he clearly stepped on the first base bag.

It didn't take long for replay to overturn the call.

Bauers ended up stealing second base and coming around to score on Brandon Lockridge's RBI double asthe Brewers went on to a 6-2 win.

"I don't know what happened,"Bauers told reporters after the game, avoiding repeated opportunities to comment any further. "I'm just thankful to get on base and thankful to come around and score."

King Charles to visit US to address Congress, meet President Trump

King Charles III will visit the United States this month to address American lawmakers,United States House Speaker Mike Johnsonannounced on Wednesday, April 1.

The royals' itinerary includes celebrating "the historic connections and the modern bilateral relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States," the palace wrote in a news release.

Trump said the monarchs' trip is planned April 27-30.

The king is expected to speak to lawmakers on April 28, and attend a banquet dinner ​at ‌the White House later that day.

The king will then continue to the island of Bermuda to undertake his first royal visit as monarch to a British overseas territory.
