They're uncomfortable, embarrassing and tough to get rid of, but cold sores may also be a warning sign of dementia. Scientists from Sweden published a paper linking the virus behind cold sores, herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1), to an increased risk of the memory-robbing disease. By studying more than 1,000 elderly people over 15 years, researchers found people who had been infected with HSV-1 twice as likely to develop dementia than those who were not infected.
