North Carolina teen pleads guilty to killing 5 in 2022 shooting spree

A North Carolina teenager who killed five people, including his older brother and a police officer, in a2022 mass shootingin the state's capital pleaded guilty on Jan. 21 to murder and other charges.

Austin David Thompson, now 18, pleaded guilty to five counts of first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first-degree murder, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, and one count of assault of an officer with a gun, court records show. The guilty plea came a day after Thompson's attorneys filed a written notice of intent in Wake County court.

"After lengthy discussions with his attorneys about how a trial would proceed, he has decided he wishes to save the community and the victims from as much additional infliction of trauma as possible," attorneys Kellie Mannette and Deonte' Thomas wrote in the notice.

In October 2022, Thompson went on a shooting spree in a residential neighborhood of Raleigh, North Carolina, before opening fire again along a walking trail, authorities said.Five people were killed, and two others were injured in the attack.

Thompson had been scheduled to go to trial for the murders in February. A judge set a sentencing hearing, which is expected to take several days, on Feb. 2, according to court records.

Since Thompson was 15 years old at the time of the shooting, he is not eligible for the death penalty. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison without parole.

What happened in the 2022 Raleigh shooting?

The hourslong shooting unfolded on Oct. 13, 2022, in a residential area northeast of downtown Raleigh, according to authorities. The shooting began at around 5 p.m. local time near the Neuse River Greenway Trail, a trail that runs through part of the city.

Thompson first fatally shot and stabbed his brother in their home before shooting four other people on the streets of Raleigh's Hedingham neighborhood, authorities said. He then fled toward a nearby walking trail, where he shot at two more people.

Thompson eluded law enforcement for hours — setting off a manhunt across a crime scene that stretched for 2 miles — before he was cornered in a shed, according to authorities. After a standoff, authorities said Thompson was taken into custody with what appeared to be a self-inflicted shot to the head and was in critical condition.

What we know:An Indiana judge and his wife were shot in their home.

"While the serious brain injury he suffered has made it such that Austin cannot explain why he committed this shooting, he has always accepted that he did this," Thompson's attorneys wrote in his notice of intent. "He recognizes the deep pain he has caused the victims' families as well as his own family."

The victims killed were identified as Thompson's brother, James Roger Thompson, 16; Raleigh police Officer Gabriel Torres, 29; Nicole Connors, 52; Mary Marshall, 34; and Susan Karnatz, 49. Torres was heading to work when the shooting occurred, authorities said.

Two people were injured, including another police officer and a 59-year-old woman, according to authorities.

In 2024, Thompson's father pleaded guilty to improperly storing a handgun that authorities said Thompson used in the shootings,CBS 17andABC 11reported at the time. He received a suspended sentence and probation.

Ai Weiwei quietly returns to China after a decade: 'It felt like a phone call suddenly reconnecting'

In 2015, Chinahanded backsomething of great value to Ai Weiwei: his Chinese passport. The move allowed the dissident artist to travel for the first time since authorities revoked his document in 2011 – the same year he spent 81 days in secret government detention for alleged tax evasion. He moved to Berlin shortly after.

For the past 10 years Ai has lived in Germany, the UK and now Portugal, never once setting foot in his native country, where people with far less controversial pasts have facedarbitrary detention. But in mid-December, he decided to take the risk, returning for a three-week visit.

"It felt like a phone call that had been disconnected for 10 years suddenly reconnecting," he said of the instant he arrived into Beijing. "The tone, rhythm and speed, all returned to how they were before."

The artist flew into Beijing Capital International Airport with his 17-year-old son. This photo was captured on their way out of the airport. - Courtesy of Ai Weiwei Studio

Glimpses of the visit are on Ai'sInstagram account, where the artist actively posts but doesn't typically write captions, contributing to the trip's under-the-radar quality. Varied scenes include a video of smokestacks in the unmistakable soft light of a Beijing winter, the artist puffing cigarettes as a Lazy Susan spins leisurely with dishes and a bottle of Nongfu Spring, a local mineral water brand; and a robot getting out of an elevator.

Still images show the artist lifting dumbbells at an indoor gym and catching up with old friends – the ordinary becoming somewhat extraordinary when compared to how intensely he was surveilled by authorities when he was last in China's capital.

Nostalgia permeates the images. "What I missed most was speaking Chinese," he said. "For immigrants, the greatest loss is not wealth, loneliness or an unfamiliar lifestyle, but the loss of linguistic exchange."

When Ai left in 2015, he was a thorn on the government's side. The outspoken artist and activist relentlessly criticized China on everything from alleged human rights abuses to censorship and corruption, with artworks such as"Remembering" (2009)– an installation commemorating the thousands of children killed under the collapse of shoddily-constructed school buildings during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake – gaining international attention. In "S.A.C.R.E.D," he depicted what it was like to be imprisoned for nearly three months, in the form of six life-sized dioramas that debuted at the2013 Venice Biennale.

Such pieces came at a time when – in the years after the 2008 Beijing Olympics – officials carefully projected a new era of Chinese development and aggressively cracked down on any dissent. In the decade Ai has been away, China's censorship and surveillance efforts have only grown more sophisticated, with critics now fearing that artificial intelligence isturbochargingthese systems of control.

Ai had previouslysaidhe had no illusions about his chances of returning to China. But now his son is almost 17 years old, he no longer bears the same weight of parental responsibility – and feels "relatively freer" to act of his own accord.

Poignant photos from the trip shared with CNN show the father and son walking out of Beijing Capital International Airport, as well as reuniting with Ai's 93-year-old mother.

"When I saw my mother, she was smiling and especially happy to see my son. They held hands the entire time. She did not say much, but she was deeply content. That contentment was like a gentle wind on a hot day, or a few drops of rain during a drought – natural, humane happiness.

"I am not familiar with this kind of feeling, and it surprised me," he added.

Ai didn't take any specific precautions when planning the trip but was "inspected and interrogated" for almost two hours at Beijing's airport before he was allowed to pass immigration. "The questions were very simple: How long do you plan to stay here? Where else do you plan to go?"

The fact that rest of the 68-year-old's visit was "smooth and, one could say, pleasant" may signal authorities' confidence on a number of fronts: a Chinese public that is increasingly unfamiliar with the artist as his name and works have been largely censored on the country's social media platforms; and in the expansive reach of their surveillance technologies. Politically, there might also be little to gain from the international outcry that would arise were the high-profile artist detained or prevented from entering Beijing.

The red lines in China, as always, are vague and fast-evolving. Another prominent Chinese artist, Gao Zhen, had relocated to New York but returned to China in June 2024 to visit family, only to bedetainedabout a week before he planned to return to the US, for scathing sculptures of Mao he created over a decade ago.

From Europe, Ai has continued to produce works that are critical of the state, such as the 2020 documentary "Coronation," on China's initial handling of the Covid-19 outbreak in Wuhan, and "Cockroach," a sympathetic take on the 2019 Hong Kong pro-democracy protests. But he has also gone to great lengths to make art of what's in front of him: the global refugee crisis and, more recently, the war in Ukraine.

When asked if he thought the Chinese government's attitudes towards him had changed given his trouble-free stay, he said he didn't think any change began recently.

"Rather, it comes from my long-term public work in expressing my views… Although a country or group may disagree with my positions, they at least recognize that I speak sincerely and not for personal gain."

He believes China is "in an upward phase," pointing to individual wealth, national strength and personal freedoms, though discussing political topics remains taboo. "The overall trajectory is one of ascent, even though different problems emerge at different stages."

Western society, conversely, is in decline, he argued, in perhaps rare agreement with the frequent message from Chinese leaders. He added that changes he's seen over the past 10 years have "shocked" him. "It feels like a landslide burying the highways it once built. Values once celebrated now appear hollow and collapsed. The West increasingly struggles to sustain its own logic; in many areas it has lost its ethical authority and descended into something barely recognizable."

So does he plan on moving back to China anytime soon?

"I have never truly left anywhere; the distance has simply grown longer," Ai explained. He once said he felt that he belonged nowhere, a"stranger"everywhere he goes. But it's his Chinese passport that keeps him rooted.

"Even when I lived under great difficulty, I still felt that this identity gave me the fundamental right to return to my place of birth. Other human-made obstacles were secondary."

ASEAN chair Philippines hosts Myanmar 'stakeholder meeting' to push stalled peace bid

By Karen Lema

Reuters

MANILA, Jan 22 (Reuters) - The Philippines, the current chair of ASEAN, this week hosted a meeting of "important political groups" from army-ruled Myanmar, officials said on Thursday, in an effort to advance the regional bloc's long-stalled peace plan.

Philippine Foreign Affairs Secretary Ma. Theresa Lazaro, who took over this year as ASEAN's special envoy to the crisis ‌in Myanmar, said discussions at the "stakeholders' meeting" in Tagaytay included talk of de-escalation, facilitating aid delivery and fostering political dialogue.

"I encouraged their active, constructive and meaningful sharing ‌of perspectives on the implementation of the ASEAN Five-Point Consensus," Lazaro said of the meeting on X, referring to the peace plan agreed between the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and Myanmar in 2021.

Lazaro's meeting follows her trip to Myanmar earlier this month, when she met ruling general Min Aung Hlaing and had what Manila said was a "warm and constructive exchange of views."

RAVAGED BY CONFLICT

Dominic Xavier Imperial, a Philippine foreign ministry official, on Thursday confirmed the military government ‌was not represented at this week's meeting and declined to name the attendees at their request.

"Important political groups were represented," he said in a text message to Reuters.

Myanmar has been ravaged by conflict since a ‍2021 coup that triggered a protest movement, which was brutally suppressed by the military. The situation has devolved into a civil war between the military and a loose alliance of rebel groups.

Aside from some improvements in humanitarian access, ASEAN's peace plan has made little progress, with fighting ongoing in swathes of the country. Malaysia, last year's ASEAN chair, had expressed optimism that its efforts to engage different sides in the conflict ‌could bear fruit.

Myanmar - a resource-rich former British colony, which has been governed by the military for most of the past six decades - is facing one of the most serious humanitarian crises in Asia. Thousands have been killed in post-coup conflict and, according to the United Nations, 3.6 million people were displaced.

A spokesperson for the junta did not answer calls on Thursday. Myanmar's shadow National Unity Government did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the meeting.

MILITARY-DOMINATED ELECTION

Myanmar is holding a phased general election, with two of three voting rounds already completed and official results so far showing a party allied with the military winning the majority of seats. A third round is scheduled to take place on Sunday.

Though turnout has been low, the junta has said the election will bring political stability, describing it as "a victory for the people."

ASEAN has not sent observers to monitor the election. Critics and ‍some Western governments have called the vote a one-sided sham to perpetuate army rule through civilian proxies.

The Chin National Front, an ethnic minority rebel group that holds territory near Myanmar's northern border with India, confirmed to Reuters that it had attended the two-day meeting this week and praised envoy Lazaro for making early headway in talking to all sides.

"This was a positive meeting," its spokesperson Salai Van said. "Within one month, ASEAN's new chair ‌met with Myanmar stakeholders and we are optimistic about the situation."

No. 7 Nebraska remains perfect, rolling past Washington

Pryce Sandfort scored 23 points and Sam Hoiberg added 14 as seventh-ranked Nebraska stayed unbeaten with a 76-66 victory against Washington on Wednesday in Lincoln, Neb.

Hannes Steinbach registered a double-double of 21 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Huskies while Zoom Diallo added 18 points, six assists and five boards.

Washington shot 44.3% compared to 50.9% for Nebraska while trailing by as many as 18 points.

Cornhuskers forward Braden Frager, who entered the night as the team's third-leading scorer at 12.7 points a game, played just four minutes. He appeared to land awkwardly on his left ankle after making a layup early in the first half and did not return to the game.

Frager was back on the bench after halftime, wearing street clothes and a boot on his left foot.

Nebraska (19-0, 8-0 Big Ten) regrouped and rolled just the same to extend its best start in school history. Rienk Mast had 12 points, Jamarques Lawrence chipped in 11, and Berke Buyuktuncel and Hoiberg grabbed seven rebounds each.

The Huskies (10-9, 2-6) have lost three in a row and five of six but hung with the conference leaders early. Steinbach registered the first basket of the night off an offensive rebound, and a JJ Mandaquit layup helped Washington pull within four points about 10 minutes later.

Nebraska answered with three successive treys over a two-minute span to seize control for good. Sandfort sandwiched a pair of 3-pointers around one from Jared Garcia, who saw increased minutes with Frager sidelined.

Sparked by four makes from Sandfort, the Cornhuskers connected on 11-of-29 attempts from long range. After a 7-0 Huskies run brought the visitors to within 11 points midway through the second half, Nebraska channeled its touch from distance again behind back-to-back treys from Sandfort and Mast.

Sandfort has scored 20-plus points in three straight games.

Washington starter Wesley Yates III was out due to injury.

Steinbach leads the Big Ten with 11 double-doubles.

Cornhuskers coach Fred Hoiberg said after the game that the team would re-evaluate Frager on Thursday morning.

  • Mark Consuelos and son Joaquin will both make their Broadway debuts in separate spring productions

  • Mark will star in Noël Coward's Fallen Angels, while Joaquin will appear in Arthur Miller's Death of a Salesman.

  • Kelly Ripa joked about choosing between their shows, tickets for which are on sale now

Kelly Ripais going to be seeing, as she put it, "hella theater" this spring.

That's because the beloved daytime host's husband,Mark Consuelos, and their son,Joaquin Consuelos, will each be on Broadway at the same time — in two different revivals!

Mark, 54, will join Golden Globe-winner Rose Byrne and Tony Award-winner Kelli O'Hara in the Roundabout Theatre Company's restaging of Noël Coward'sFallen Angels. He'll portray Maurice Duclos, the secret lover of the women's characters.

The play — which will also star Tracee Chimo, Christopher Fitzgerald and Aasif Mandvi — will begin preview performances at the Todd Haimes Theatre on Friday, March 27, and open officially on Sunday, April 19. The limited engagement production, directed by Scott Ellis, is scheduled through Sunday, June 7.

Both Mark and Joaquin will be making their Broadway debuts in the respective plays. Though Mark has had a long history of acting gigs, fromAll My ChildrentoRiverdaleto the upcomingScream 7, this is the first big role for Joaquin. The 22-year-old just graduated the University of Michigan School of Drama last spring.

That puts Ripa, of course, in a precarious position. "Every night, I'm going to have this choice, like, 'Who do I see tonight?' " she explained onLive with Kelly and Markon Wednesday, Jan, 21, after announcing news of Mark's casting. "Do I go see my husband, or do I go see my beloved son?"

Chances are, Ripa will be at both, as will her other kids:elder son Michael Consuelos, 28, and daughter Lola Consuelos, 24. The family is a tight-knit bunch, often supporting one another through their various endeavors.

But Ripa might need the most support. "Is the anxiety kicking in?" she asked Mark on Wednesday. "When you agreed to do it months ago, myanxiety kicked in!"

Mark, however, appeared to be stress free. "I've been wanting to do this," he said. "I love getting on stage. It's been years since I've had a chance to do it because of travel, and living here in New York City, I'm pretty much anchored here now. I'm trapped! So, I thought it would be a good idea!"

Back in July, PEOPLE caught up with theLive with Kelly and Markhosts about the advice they gave Joaquin after his graduation.

"Slow and steady wins the race kind of thing," Mark recalled.

"Also, the less we say the better, you know," Ripa, 54, added. "Kids are more reticent to take advice from their parents, so we just keep it quiet, and we've been lucky so far. They've really turned out to be fabulous adults. We're really proud of them."
