Vance heads to Minneapolis amid tension over ICE crackdown

By Heather Schlitz and Bo Erickson

MINNEAPOLIS, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Vice President JD Vance is expected to visit Minneapolis on Thursday to show support for a massive federal law enforcement operation underway in a city that has been on edge since an ICE officer shot dead a 37-year-old mother of three.

With the city and the country deeply divided over the January 7 fatal shooting of Renee Good, the vice ‌president's visit is meant to show support for the work of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, part of a force of 3,000 federal law enforcement officers deployed to the area.

Minnesota has become the latest ‌Democratic-leaning jurisdiction targeted by Republican President Donald Trump with a federal police show of force that the administration says is aimed at immigration violators and a fraud investigation involving social service programs in the Somali community.

Trump and his supporters have described the federal police rollouts as a necessary response to lax Democratic policies on crime and immigration. Local Democratic leaders and street protesters have accused ICE agents of aggressive tactics and racial profiling, and urged Trump to withdraw from what they say is a provocation dividing Americans.

ARMED OFFICERS, OBSERVERS WITH WHISTLES

Heavily armed federal officers ‌in tactical gear have been combing the streets of Minneapolis rounding up suspects they say are dangerous criminal immigration violators, while sometimes ensnaring law-abiding U.S. citizens. Demonstrators have responded with their own observer patrols, blowing whistles to warn people of ICE raids ‍while voicing their displeasure with Trump's escalation.

The operations have divided some of the president's own supporters.

Vance has taken a leading role in defending the Minnesota ICE shooting. Less than 24 hours after Good's death, Vance stood up for the officer involved, blamed the woman who was killed, and said the incident should be a political test ahead of the 2026 midterm elections that will determine control of Congress.

The vice president will host a roundtable event with local leaders and community members where he will discuss "restoring ‌law and order in Minnesota" and meet with officers in a show of support, the White House said on Wednesday. He will also argue that Minneapolis' policy of banning city staff from enforcing federal immigration law has degraded public safety and endangered ICE officers, the White House said.

Vance is also expected to discuss how the Trump administration is taking on so-called sanctuary cities that do not cooperate with the administration's immigration crackdown, threatening to cut them off from federal funding starting on February 1.

'POLITICAL THEATER'

Richard Carlbom, chair of Minnesota's Democratic Party, said he hopes Vance will promote calm but fears political agitation.

"I think he is simply coming here for political theater. This entire situation we're being faced with is a retribution campaign by him and the president of the United States against Minnesotans," Carlbom told Reuters, calling on Minnesotans to "continue to resist the vice president."

Trump addressed the Minnesota issue during his speech to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, on Wednesday, saying, "ICE gets beat up by stupid people from leadership in Minnesota. We actually are helping Minnesota so much, but they don't ‍appreciate it."

Patty O'Keefe, a 36-year-old Minnesotan and non-profit worker who was pepper sprayed and detained by federal agents in January after documenting ICE movements in the city, did not welcome Vance's visit.

"He's calling for law and order when it's his federal agents who are creating chaos and escalating violence," O'Keefe said. "His divisive rhetoric is not welcome here."

The president and the White House have tied the ICE operation to issues of welfare fraud in the state. Since 2022, at least 56 people have pleaded guilty, according to the Justice ‌Department.

"Minnesota reminds us that the West cannot mass import foreign cultures," Trump said in Davos.

Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin to send 6 space tourists 60 miles high

Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin will soonlaunch a rocket from West Texasbearingsix lucky passengerswho will become the latest to ride to the edge ofspace.

Awaiting them more than 60 miles high is a stunning view of Earthfew have ever witnessed, as well as a few moments of microgravity that allows them to float weightless throughout the spacecraft. Andwhen they land back on solid ground, the space tourists will joinan exclusive club of celebrities, business leaders and others whohave experienced the brief celestial journey.

Bezos' spaceflight companyhas been offering the cosmic joy rides aboard Blue Origin's New Shepard suborbital rocket since the billionaire Amazon founder was part of the maiden crewed voyage in 2021.

Most of uscan only dream of such an experience, but there is a small consolation: Blue Origin will, as usual, provide a livestreamof its first spaceflight of 2026 that you can watch from home.

Here's everything to knowabout the next Blue Origin launch, including how to watch it live.

The vehicle became the first of two landers manufactured by a U.S. company to reach the moon is 2025 in crucial missions to lay the groundwork for NASA to return humans to the lunar surface in the years ahead. Athena, the lunar lander on Intuitive Machines' IM-2 mission, captured this image of the moon's surface with Earth seen in the distance ahead of a March 6 landing attempt. While the lander was the second U.S. vehicle to reach the moon within a week, it ultimately landed on its side, which hindered much of its mission. Does Jeff Bezos own Blue Origin?

Jeff Bezos receives his official astronaut wings after launching on Blue Origin's New Shepard rocket on Tuesday, July 20, 2021.

Billionaire Jeff Bezos, best known for founding Amazon, founded the private space technology company Blue Origin in 2000. Headquartered in Washington state, Blue Origin conducts tests and launches of its small New Shepard spacecraft from West Texas.

Bezos even boarded Blue Origin's New Shepardfor its maiden crewed voyage in July 2021, which came after the spacecraft flew on 15 flight tests beginning in 2012.

What is New Glenn?

The smaller, suborbital New Shepard vehicle is not to be confused withBlue Origin's towering orbital New Glenn rocketthat has now launched twice from Florida. The 322-foot spacecraft, one of the largest active rockets in the world, last got off the ground Nov. 13 ona mission to propel twin NASA ESCAPADE satelliteson a voyage to Mars.

While New Shepard is designed for quick trips to space, New Glenn is indicative of Blue Origin's aim to compete with billionaireElon Musk's SpaceX – whose fleet of Falcon 9 rocketsdominates the commercial space industry.

What happens during a New Shepard rocket launch?

A Blue Origin New Shepard rocket lifts off with a crew of six on Dec. 11, 2021.

Eachspaceflight on a New Shepard vehiclelasts about 11 minutes from liftoff to capsule touchdown.

Named after astronaut Alan Shepard, the first American in space, the 60-foot-tall New Shepard rocket is topped with the gum drop-shaped crew capsule. The spacecraft operates completely autonomously, meaning no pilots are aboard.

During its ascent, the spacecraft reaches supersonic speeds surpassing 2,000 mph before the rocket booster separates from the crew capsule. At that point, the capsule becomes weightless as the spacecraft continues toward its highest point on its brief voyage above the Kármán Line – the 62-mile-high internationally recognized boundary of space.

Passengers will at this time experience a few minutes of microgravity after they unstrap themselves from their seats to gaze out thecapsule's large windowsand take in a stunning view of Earth.

Blue Origin's New Shepard crew capsule returns to Earth April 14 following a launch from Launch Site One in Van Horn, Texas. Blue Origin's Mission NS-31 carried Aisha Bowe, Amanda Nguyn, Kerianne Flynn, Gayle King, Katy Perry, and Lauren Sanchez, is the first all-female astronaut crew since 1963.

Meanwhile, the rocket booster heads back to the ground while firing its engines and using its fins to slow and control its descent to land vertical about two miles from the launchpad.

The capsule itself eventually begins what Blue Origin refers to as a "stable freefall" – plummeting back to Earth as three massive parachutes deploy and the capsule makes a soft landing in the desert, sending up plumes of dust.

How much does it cost to ride Blue Origin?

If you have dreams of blasting off to orbit on a Blue Origin spacecraft, you likelyneed to either have very deep pocketsor a name that's recognizable enough to get you invited as an honored guest.

Though Blue Origin does not publicly list prices on its website,a form to reserve a seatrequires customers to agree to a $150,000 deposit.

And if the price ofthe first ticket soldfor a Blue Origin spaceflight in 2021 is any indicator, seats likely cost millions of dollars. The $28 million ticket price was the winning bid in an auction that included 7,600 people registered to bid from 159 countries.

However, a select few passengers over the years have had their seats aboard New Shepard paid through grants and other funding methods from large institutions.

US judge weighs bid to halt Trump's White House ballroom

By Mike Scarcella

WASHINGTON, Jan 22 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump's plan to erect a $400 million ballroom on the site of the White House's demolished East Wing faces a courtroom test on Thursday, when a ‌judge is set to hear a preservation group's renewed bid to halt the project.

U.S. District Judge ‌Richard Leon in Washington scheduled a hearing for 3:30 p.m. ET to consider the National Trust for Historic Preservation's request for a preliminary injunction to stop work on the 90,000-square-foot (8,361-square-meter) ballroom.

The National Trust sued Trump and several federal agencies in December, arguing the project has proceeded ‌without required approvals, environmental review or congressional authorization.

The group says federal law bars construction on federal parkland in Washington without ‍the express authority of Congress. It also argues the National Park Service violated federal law by issuing an environmental assessment instead of a full impact statement, and by releasing it after demolition began on the 120-year-old East Wing.

Leon in December declined to issue ‌a temporary restraining order in the case. The White House and other federal defendants have urged the court to deny a preliminary injunction, which would force an end to construction while the lawsuit proceeds.

The administration has defended the legality of the project, arguing it followed in a long line of presidential renovations, including Franklin D. Roosevelt's construction of the East Wing itself.

The ballroom is needed for state functions, its design is still evolving, and above-ground construction is not planned until April, making an injunction unnecessary, the administration said in a ‍court filing.

The court clash comes days after the National Capital Planning Commission held a hearing about the ballroom plans, marking the first time plans for the ballroom had been discussed in a public forum. The White House submitted an application for the project to the ‌NCPC and the Commission of Fine Arts last month.

Amid Blake andJustin Baldoni's showdown during the making ofIt Ends With Us, the actress seemingly called for favors from big-shot friends to help her through the "most upsetting experience" she's ever had on set.

Text messages exchanged between Blake andTaylor Swiftwere also exposed.

Ahead of a January 22 hearing, unsealed court documents have revealed an array of emails and text messages Blake Lively sent to Ben Affleck and Matt Damon during her conflict with Justin Baldoni, her co-star and the director ofIt Ends With Us.

"Ben, It's Blake. Don't hang up," she wrote in an email sent to Ben Affleck on May 17, 2024.

"I've just come out the other side (well almost) of the most upsetting experience I've ever had on a movie," the 38-year-old actress claimed. "This movie nearly k*lled me."

"The making of doc of this film would be more interesting than the movie could ever be," she added before calling Justin a "clown."

"I ended up rewriting and restructuring the entire script, I also ended up having to direct the movie via the chaotic clown 'director'/actor/producer/financier/studio head at the center," Lively wrote to the Oscar winner, who was her costar in the 2010 filmThe Town."Yes that's all the same person."

TheGossip Girlalum claimed that "everyone" Justin had on the set was "in a cult." She then asked Ben if he can set aside acouple of hours to watch the film.

"If you have 1:58 of free time at any time in the next few days, would you be willing to watch the movie and give me any ideas or notes. I will pix it to you. You can literally text me a voice memo so you don't have to formally write thoughts," she wrote.

Blake also asked ifhis ex-wife Jennifer Lopezand their kids would also be interested in watching the film.

"If your wife or kids are around, I'd love their opinion also (fyi it does cover domestic violence so no one is caught off guard)," she added. "I'm such a fan of Jennifer's, I've told her as much every time I've met her, and it would be an honor to have her take."

The actress reiterated that there was "zero pressure" on him to watch the film, but knew that "very few people" would be "as prescriptive and insightful" as he would be.

She then mentioned that her husband Ryan Reynolds had also reached out to Matt Damon to watch and share his thoughts on the film.

"Ryan asked Matt to watch also so I think he's watching this weekend. Good men showing up. I'm beyond grateful for that," she said.

"Also. Can you believe Jason Bourne is watching my movie?!?! I'll get you an autograph one day. Don't worry," she added, referring to Matt's famous character from the Bourne franchise.

It is unclear whether Ben responded to Blake's request, but Matt's reaction was included in the court filings.

Ryan Reynolds reached out to Matt and his wife Lucy with what he described as a "zero-pressure ask."

"We know how important family time is…so no worries either way. We'd LOVE to get your well earned pov…And if your girls want to see it on the big screen at B's family and friends screening Saturday at 6pm, they're obviously most welcome!" he wrote.

The action hero said the making ofIt Ends With Ushas been one of the "all-time zingers on and off set."

"One day, we'll make a movie about the movie. And we can't wait to tell you all about it," he continued. "The stories are already finding their place in the pantheon of legendary Hollywood Insanity. We're about to be off for at least a year and a half. Maybe two years. Maybe forever."

Blake joined the conversation, saying she was "adding more zeroes to the pressure" and thanked Matt and his wife for "even considering."

"It's not a bad movie. So who knows, you just may enjoy some of it," she said. "Be warned it covers domestic violence In key places so just want to be sure you know. This movie nearly k*lled me."

She went on to talk about Justin, saying, "The director/costar/producer/financier/head of the studio (yes all one person) had zero experience."

"But the good news is he also has no taste, and an enormous ego, but onlybecause he's in a cultand believes he's our century's prophet," she added. "I wish even one of these things was hyperbole."

Matt responded to the request with an offer to Blake, saying she could direct a movie with Artists Equity, the production company he and hislongtime pal Ben Affleckstarted together.

"We'll give you any help we can. And if this experience hasn't totally destroyed your soul, Blake, you should come direct your next movie at Artists Equity," he said. "We're kind of like a cult but a really nice one."

Court filings also included text messages of Blake talking about her "doofus director" to singer Taylor Swift.

In one text, Blake asked theLove Storysinger to read her revised script ofIt Ends With Us,saying: "You don't have to read of course."

Blake's deposition included an explanation of the request to Taylor.

"I sent Taylor the script on her way to my apartment because Justin was still there, and I asked her to read them. I told her she didn't have to, I didn't want her to feel pressured to do that, but I hoped that she would," she said.

Taylor reportedly responded to Blake's request with: "I'll do anything for you !!"

In another portion of the unsealed text messages, Blakeseemingly apologized to the singerfor being a "bad friend" amid the unfolding showdown with Justin.

"I felt like a bad friend lately because I was such a sad sack who only talked about my own shit for months," the actress reportedly wrote.

"You were generous to not only be the key person there for me during all of it, but also to let me off the hook for being so in it," she added. "But I still have a feeling something may not be right."

Taylor Swift told Blake that her messages started "reading [like] a mass corporate email sent to 200 employees"

When Blake said she wanted to ensure things were okay between them, Taylor responded, saying, "No you're not wrong, but it's also not a big deal."

TheShake it Offsinger went on to say that she felt "exhausted" in "every avenue" of her life and felt a "little bit of a shift" in the way Blake had been talking to her in recent months.

"Yes there has been a lot of the Justin stuff but I've been through things like this before and I know how all-consuming it is. It's more like… and I feel really bad saying anything about this because your texts have been so nice in their intent but your last few… it's felt like I was reading a mass corporate email sent to 200 employees," she said.

"You said the word 'we' like 18 times. And it feels awful to be in any way critical of any way you process what you've been going through but I just kinda miss my funny, dark, normal-speaking friend who talks to me as herself, not like. A plural unit," she continued.

In anothersegment of their texts, the pop star said she understood that Blake was feeling "attacked from all sides for ridiculous reasons" and felt the need to "overly explain things or be overly nice or whatever."

"[But] It's me! That's just caused a little distance!" she added.

Blake had sued Justin in December, 2024, accusing him of s**ual harassment andcreating a smear campaignagainst her, all of which the director strongly denied. He filed a countersuit that a judge dismissed last June. Blake's case is set to go to trial in May this year.

"Trying to get all the top dogs to side with her so she has more power to exclude Baldoni," one commented online
