Candlelight vigils in Hong Kong's Victoria Park every June 4 routinely drew thousands - but have been banned since 2020

Three activists who organised an annual vigil marking the ChineseTiananmen Square massacrehave gone on trial in Hong Kong, facing 10 years in prison if convicted.

Hong Kong used to host yearly candlelight vigils to mark Beijing's deadly crackdown on demonstrators on June 4, 1989 – but those events have been banned since 2020.

That year,Beijing imposed a national security lawon the former British colony in the wake of huge, sometimes violent pro-democracy protests.

The Tiananmen vigil organiser, known as the Hong Kong Alliance, was shut down in 2021 after authorities arrested the three leaders now on trial. The trio and the Alliance are charged with "incitement to subversion", with the no-jury trial scheduled for 75 days.

Defendants Chow Hang-tung and Lee Cheuk-yan have been behind bars since 2021 and pleaded not guilty at the start of the hearing. The third defendant, Albert Ho, pleaded guilty.

Critics say their case shows that Beijing's promise to keep the city's Western-style civil liberties intact for 50 years has weakened over time. But the city's government said its law enforcement actions are evidence-based and strictly in accordance with the law.

About 70 people queued in the cold on Thursday morning for the public gallery, while dozens of police were deployed around the court.

As they entered the courtroom, Lee Cheuk-yan waved at his supporters, who waved back and said "good morning" to him. Albert Ho sat calmly. Chow Hang-tung thanked her supporters for enduring winds during the night and bowed to them.

The Alliance had repeatedly called for the "end of one-party rule" in China, which prosecutors said amounted to subverting state power, according to a case document published on Wednesday.

The prosecution will rely on company records, online material, clips of public speeches and evidence seized from the now-defunct Tiananmen museum operated by the group.

Amnesty International said on Thursday the trial was "not about national security – it is about rewriting history". Human Rights Watch urgedHong Kongto drop all charges and release the activists.

Hong Kong authorities say the prosecutions are safeguarding human rights and based on evidence.

The Hong Kong Alliance in Support of Patriotic Democratic Movements of China was founded in May 1989 to support protesters holding democracy and anti-corruption rallies in Beijing.

The following month, China's government sent tanks and soldiers to crush the movement on and around Tiananmen Square, a decision it has since heavily censored domestically. The death toll remains disputed to this day, butestimates range from the hundreds to the thousands.

The Alliance spent the next three decades calling on Beijing to accept responsibility, free dissidents and embrace democratic reform. Its candlelight vigils in Hong Kong's Victoria Park every June 4 routinely drew thousands.

But the Hong ‌Kong memorials have never resumed since China imposed a tough national security law and several June 4 monuments, such as the "pillar of shame" have also been removed from the city's universities.

The trial follows last month'sconviction of media tycoon Jimmy Lai, which drew international condemnation. Lai was found guilty of conspiring to commit foreign collusion.

The city's Chief Justice responded to the Lai criticisms on Monday, saying judges deal "only with the law and the evidence, not with any underlying matters of politics".

An aerial view of the landslide, triggered by heavy rain in Mount Maunganui

A landslide smashed into a campsite in rain-swept New Zealand on Thursday, leaving multiple people including a child missing under tonnes of mud.

The slip occurred at 9.30am local time (8.30pm Wednesday GMT) at the base of an extinct volcano on the country's North Island.

Videos showed a shower block and several campervans crushed and buried in rubble at Mount Maunganui, about 142 miles south-east of Auckland.

Voices were briefly heard calling for help from beneath the rubble, witnesses and emergency officials said, but they soon went quiet. A child is among the missing.

"Our initial fire crew arrived and were able to hear the same," New Zealand's fire and emergency commander William Pike said.

"Shortly after our initial crew arrived, we withdrew everyone from the site due to possible movement and slip."

Mr Pike said no sign of life has been detected since. No one has been rescued so far and the campsite remains closed.

Tim Anderson, the assistant police commissioner, said the number of people missing was in the "single figures".

A witness, Mark Tangney, told the New Zealand Herald that he had rushed to help those trapped by the landslide. He had set out on a hike when he heard the screams.

"I was one of the first there. There were six or eight other guys there on the roof of the toilet block with tools, just trying to take the roof off because we could hear people screaming 'help us, help us, get us out of here'."

Mr Tangney said they "went hard for about half an hour and after 15 minutes, the people that were trapped, we couldn't hear them anymore".

After 30 minutes, the police called off the rescue saying it "was too dangerous".

An Australian tourist who saw the landslide coming down while he was sitting in a pool, told broadcaster TVNZ: "I'm still shaking… I turned around and had to jump out of my seat and just run."

Heavy rains have ravaged large parts of the North Island, with the country's national weather service issuing a rare "threat to life" red warning in several regions.

Some areas have received a month's worth of rain in 12 hours. People living in low-lying affected areas have been ordered to evacuate.

Another landslide hit a house in the nearby Bay of Plenty area. Two people escaped, but two others were still missing, according to Mr Anderson.

Further north near the town of Warkworth, a man remains missing after floodwaters swept him from a road on Wednesday morning.

New Zealand's prime minister Christopher Luxon urged residents in affected areas to heed safety advice during the extreme conditions.

"Extreme weather continues to cause dangerous conditions across the North Island. Right now, the government is doing everything we can to support those impacted," he posted on social media.

At least43 people were killedin southern Spain last Sunday when a high-speed train jumped the track and caused a second train passing the other way to derail. That was followed by another crash on Tuesday when a commuter train outside Barcelona hit a retaining wall that collapsed, killing one person.

The father of Getafe player David Cordón was among the victims of the first incident, the Madrid-based club said. Getafe plays at Girona on Monday. Cordón is unavailable due to injury.

The incidents have stunned the nation thatleads Europe in high-speed rail traveland has millions of workers who rely on commuter service every day.

Key matches

Despite its recent turmoil and coaching change, Real Madrid visits Villarreal in an important game on Saturday with the chance to retake the lead.

A win by second-placed Madrid over third-placed Villarreal would let it leapfrog Barcelona and recover the lead before its top rival plays Real Oviedo on Sunday.

Villarreal, which has played one less game, trails Madrid by seven points. So the match at home is an opportunity — perhaps its last — to keep alive its outside bid at a run for the title.

Against lowly Oviedo, Barcelona will try to shake off last weekend's loss at Real Sociedad, which ended an 11-game winning run for Hansi Flick's side.

Sociedad, for its part, is at home against Celta Vigo on Sunday. It remains undefeated in four games across La Liga and the Copa del Rey under new American coach Pellegrino Matarazzo, who has taken it into ninth place.

Players to watch

Vinícius Júnior helped to placate Madrid's angry fans by scoring one goal and assisting on three others in a6-1 rout of Monacoin the Champions League on Tuesday.

He has beentargeted for jeersby Madrid's fans for the team's poor play and for him reportedly not supporting now ex-coach Xabi Alonso, who was fired last week and replaced by Álvaro Arbeloa.

Brahim Díaz is expected to return to Madrid practice on Thursday after he helped Morocco reach the final of the Africa Cup of Nations where itlost to Senegal1-0. Díaz flubbed a chance to potentially win it when he chipped a penalty in stoppage time right into the arms of the goalkeeper before Senegal's goal.

Barcelona midfielder Fermín López, who was close to a move to Chelsea in the summer, is on a tear. He has 10 goals across all competitions, including two in a 4-2 win at Slavia Prague.

Out of action

Pedri González, the motor who makes Barcelona's passing game go, hurt his right hamstring in Prague and was substituted early in the second half. The club has yet to say the extent of his injury or how long it expects him to be out.

How many points did Alijah Arenas score in debut? USC vs. Northwestern stats

When the USC men's basketball team ran back into the locker room after pregame warmups,Alijah Arenaslingered on the court for a few more seconds to get some extra shots up before running back into the tunnel, smile on his face, to join his teammates.

The team came back out a few minutes later, and Arenas dapped up as many people sitting courtside at Galen Center as he could. "TV off" byKendrick Lamarblared over the speakers as Arenas' name was announced over the PA.

The crowd roared and gave the freshman a long standing ovation moments before he made his collegiate debut for the Trojans, starting in a74-68 loss to Northwesternon Wednesday, Jan. 21. And while he had his struggles, most of it was to be expected.

"When you do this long enough and you inject a super talented player, the results are not so shocking to me," head coach Eric Musselman said postgame. "When you put someone in and he goes three-for-15 from the field, that's a lot of shots in his minutes, but he can create his own shot. And you know, he should be a high school senior who reclassified, missed an entire summer, and then you're throwing him in the middle of Big Ten play so he doesn't have non-conference play and all that stuff, just based on injury.

"It's a difficult thing for any super talented player to go through."

Arenas scored eight points while shooting just 20% from the floor in 29 minutes, taking on a much bigger role than Musselman originally envisioned after Chad Baker-Mazara fouled out after playing just 13 minutes.

Just a few months ago, this night – just getting on the court – seemed far away for Arenas.

Let's do this, 0 ✌️@Lyfe_Lawpic.twitter.com/YQmWmRe1qy

— USC Men's Basketball (@USC_Hoops)January 22, 2026

In the early morning hours on April 24, 2025, Arenas – son of three-time NBA All-Star Gilbert Arenas – wasinvolved in a serious car accidentthat put him in a medically induced coma. His Tesla Cybertruck malfunctioned and lost control before striking a fire hydrant and a tree. Gilbert later recounted on theAll the Smoke podcastthat his son was trapped in the vehicle for 10 minutes, unable to break the car's bulletproof windows, as the engine caught fire.

Arenas had no major injuries from the crash and made a full recovery within a few days. Another setback for the incoming five-star came three months later however, when hetore his right meniscusin practice and required surgery. With an original recovery timeline of six-to-eight months, there was a real possibility that Arenas could have missed the entire 2025-26 season.

But here Arenas was, exactly six months later and just over a month after returning to full practices with the team, being thrown right into the fire.

Early in the first half, Arenas showed exactly why he was a highly coveted five-star recruit. Getting the ball in transition, the freshman took Max Green's ankles, sending theNorthwesternguard diving onto the floor. Arenas slashed towards the hoop, took off and did aJamal Murray-esque spinin mid-air to avoid Wildcats big man Arrinten Page for a layup on the second bucket of his college career to give USC a five-point lead.

This is gonna be fun 😈📺:@BigTenNetworkpic.twitter.com/mp0Jy6ZFSu

— USC Men's Basketball (@USC_Hoops)January 22, 2026

Plays like that made it easy to see why the Galen Center crowd held its breath every time Arenas touched the ball, waiting for him to do something amazing.

It didn't always pay off – like towards the end of the first half when Arenas spun his way through the Northwestern defense into the paint and tried to lay it up, only for the ball to jam against the rim on its way up. Arenas still played like a freshman in his first game for the most part, but he didn't hesitate to let the ball fly.

"I've seen him play a lot in high school and marveled at his talent, size, athleticism, shot making ability," Northwestern head coach Chris Collins said. "I mean, he's going to be playing basketball for a long, long time. Anytime you come off with a late injury, there's going to be some rust. But ... he is a big time player. The more he plays, he's just going to keep getting better."

The Trojans entered the second half trailing by three after going ice cold offensively down the stretch in the first. They spent the rest of the night playing catch up. They came within one of the Wildcats twice in the final five minutes, but each time they were called for a foul on a made shot. Both times, Northwestern converted the and-one.

Jordan Marsh led the USC rally with a game-high 19 points, all of which came in the second half. Baker-Mazara had 14 points before fouling out. Jacob Cofie led the game in rebounds with 12.

At one point in the second half, Arenas was fouled and had to exit the game briefly due to what appeared to be bleeding from his left knee. He emerged from the tunnel minutes later with a sleeve over his knee and re-entered the game.

While Arenas' presence is certainly a positive for the Trojans, it wasn't enough to stop the team from continuing to flounder, losing for the fourth time in six games. With games against No. 2 Michigan, No. 10 Michigan State and No. 4 Purdue, this was expected to be a tough part of the schedule for USC. But faltering down the stretch against a Northwestern team that was winless in Big Ten play entering Wednesday was not in the cards.

"Extremely concerned," Musselman said. "Critical, critical loss tonight. Brutal."

The Trojans now find themselves at an impasse in the season, with five conference losses and over a month left to go in the season. Arenas showed flashes of what he can be in his debut, but there might be some growing pains to be expected along the way.
