Lee Johnston

The family of a British man killed while fighting for Ukraine fear his body might never be recovered from no man's land.

Lee "Janty" Johnston, 46, a former amateur boxer who ran a children's boxing club in north Belfast, is officially listed as missing in action in Donbas.

His death was reported on Oct 15 by the unofficial group Memorial: International Volunteers for Ukraine, but his body has not been recovered.

It is thought to be in the "grey zone", or no man's land, where theremains of thousands of soldiersfrom both sides are believed to lie after nearly four years of war.

Constant drone surveillance and artillery strikes mean it is almost impossible to recover bodies from the zone.

Mr Johnston's mother, Dolores, told The Telegraph that a ceasefire was the only hope of hisbody being recoveredand brought home to Belfast.

An early draft of aUS-Russia-Europe peace proposalis understood to have included provisions for the return of missing soldiers' bodies on both sides.

"I can't rest while Lee is lying out there," she said, adding that she wanted to know more about her son's final moments.

She said: "I know there are many Ukrainian mothers also waiting for information like me. And I have as much sympathy for Russian mothers who have lost their child and are feeling the same way I do.

"You can't have closure till you know what happened."

He was 'like a father figure'

Under Ukrainian military rules, until a body is recovered, families are told only that a soldier is missing in action.

Many thousands of Ukrainian families remain in the same position as Mrs Johnston, without the official death notification that would bring them closure or the chance to bury their loved ones.

Nicolai Holm Pedersen, a Danish volunteer who fought alongside Mr Johnston, said: "Janty was like a father figure to me all through basic training. His death hit me very hard."

Mr Pedersen said his friend's body remained where he had fallen because it was too dangerous to retrieve it.

He said Mr Johnston was killed on his first mission while attempting to reach a position to relieve soldiers who had been killed or wounded.

During the hazardous two-day journey to his designated forward position, Mr Johnston had passed the bodies of other Ukrainian soldiers still lying where they had fallen.

Drones have transformed the battlefield, expanding kill zones far beyond traditional front lines, so recovery teams must wait for brief windows when surveillance eases.

Ukrainian forces firing towards Russians in Donbas, where Russian advances mean Mr Johnston's body is becoming more out of reach of recovery by the Ukrainians Ukrainian soldiers install anti-drone nets in Isyum, about 15 miles from the front line

A further complication for the Ukrainian recovery units is that in areas where Russian forces are slowly gaining territory, the Ukrainian dead on the battlefield are being left ever further out of reach.

"We do everything we can to get all soldiers' bodies back and return them to the families," an official from the unit in which Mr Johnston served, the Third Assault Brigade, told The Telegraph.

Ukrainian units sometimes use robot ground drones to bring back the dead, but the technology is new and recovery is not always feasible.

The only alternative is to have soldiers carry a body out, putting more lives at risk, the Ukrainian official added.

Scammer preyed on family

Mr Johnson's family's ordeal was compounded by a scammer posing as a Ukrainian soldier involved in body recovery.

A man calling himself "Sergeant Czaba" contacted Mrs Johnston, claiming he could retrieve her son's body for a fee, and urging her to solicit donations through a fundraising page.

"The cruellest part was the pressure from 'Sgt' Czaba to pay to keep Lee's body in a freezer," Mrs Johnston said. "He told me I didn't care if Lee went into a common grave."

She said the man sent menacing messages and exploited the family's grief, adding: "I told him I knew exactly what he was doing. He betrayed Lee's trust. Lee believed he was his friend."

The scammer is thought not to have been a soldier but may have shared accommodation with Mr Johnston in Lviv when he enlisted.

Mrs Johnston said her son would not have wanted anyone else to be killed attempting to recover his body, and she is hoping that if the Ukrainians cannot retrieve it, it may be returned by the Russians in a future exchange.

Mr Johnston's brother Derek said he had wanted to be buried in Ukraine. "He knew the chances of getting to the end of the war were not good," he said. "He knew he wasn't coming back. Everyone tried to tell him not to go."

Mrs Johnston said when her son's body was recovered, she would like to visit the boxing club in Lviv, Ukraine, where he helped train children during his recruitment.

"I would like to bury half his ashes in Ukraine and bring the other half home to Belfast," she added.

"Lee loved Ukraine. He spent 26 weeks there, but it was like he lived 26 years. He was in his element. Whatever happened, he wanted to stay. He loved every second of being there."

The Foreign Office has confirmed Mr Johnston is missing.

Winter Storm Ezra To Bring Snow, Wind And Rain Upper Midwest, Northeast On The Heels Of Winter Storm Devin

If you are anything like me, when you think of the name Ezra, you think of the band Better Than Ezra.

While I would love to see them in concert someday and I could talk about them a bunch, I'll stay focused on the topic at hand.

Winter Storm Ezra is inbound across the Upper Midwest and Northeast, expected to bring snow, rain and wind to areas just impacted by Winter Storm Devin.

The storm will rapidly strengthen as it moves over the Upper Midwest on Sunday and will be a quick mover through the Great Lakes on Monday and reaching north of Maine by Tuesday.

The first flakes fell across the Rockies on Saturday. You can see where rain and snow are falling right now on the map below:

What to Expect

Ezra's impacts will begin as rainfall across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes as temperatures are still on the mild side across the region.

Showers should begin for the Upper Midwest, including cities like Minneapolis, Des Moines, Chicago and Green Bay, before transitioning to a wintry mix and then mainly snow by Sunday night.

Day By Day

Let's break down each day:

By Sunday evening:

Upper Midwest: Precipitation will start as rain and quickly transition to a mix and eventually snow as the day progresses

Northeast: Ice will begin across interior portions of New England. Rain is expected across western New York. Rain is expected for major metropolitan areas by the evening.

Great Lakes: Western sides of the Great Lakes will see the transition to snow, but the eastern sides will still see rain through Sunday evening.

Mississippi and Ohio River Valleys: Across the southern end of Ezra, some severe thunderstorms are possible Sunday afternoon into the evening hours. The greatest chance of storms stretches from Arkansas to western Pennsylvania.

Monday:

Upper Midwest: Snowfall will begin to wrap up through the day on Monday, ending for Minneapolis by the morning and lasting into the afternoon for parts of Wisconsin.

Northeast: Ice will continue for interior portions of New England and rainfall wil continue for the major metropolitan cities.

Great Lakes: Lake effect snowfall will continue across western portions of the Great Lakes. For the eastern Great Lakes, rain will transition to snow through the day and could be heavy at times.

How Much Snow/Ice?

The heaviest snow will fall on the south side of relatively warm Lake Superior in communities like Marquette, Michigan. Multiple feet of snow could fall there.

Believe it or not, Marquette is over a foot below where they should be in December, so this snowfall could help the city end the month closer to average.

Elsewhere, 3-12 inches of snow is expected across the Upper Midwest, including the Twin Cities, Green Bay and Duluth, Minnesota. Lighter snow is possible throughout the northern Plains.

For parts of the interior Northeast, ice accumulation is expected to reach 1/10 of an inch Sunday afternoon into Monday. This ice will cause hazardous travel for the Monday morning commute and could also cause some power outages.

Big Chill Coming Down The Plains, Too

As someone who hates the cold, I have to have a section here for anyone in these areas that hate the cold as much as I do.

And I hope you have been outside these last few days because the warm Christmas temperatures that we've just gotten to know and love are about to come to an end.

This winter storm will open the floodgates, or should I say coldgates, for frigid air to come pouring down the Plains, Midwest and into the South and East over the next few days.

In some spots, temperatures will drop by 30-40 degrees.

Take Minneapolis and Des Moines, which have highs of 35 and 43 on Sunday, respectively. But by Monday, they drop below 20 for their highs.

Chicago will see a high in the 50s on Sunday, while St. Louis will see a pleasant high of 71. Fast forward to Monday, and both cities won't get out of the 20s.

The South, Too

Us in the South are not immune from the cold either.

Dallas and Atlanta have a high in the 70s on Sunday, specifically 79 in Dallas and 71 in Atlanta.

The cold air drops to the South on Monday, where Dallas won't get out of the 50s. Atlanta has one more day of warmer temperatures but Tuesday's high will barely climb into the 40s.

The cold air is short-lived for the south and temperatures will rebound by the end of the week, but the cold will remain for the North.

Jeffrey R. Holland, next in line to lead Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dies at 85

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Jeffrey R. Holland, a high-ranking official in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints who wasnext in lineto become the faith's president, has died. He was 85.

Holland died early Saturday morning from complications associated with kidney disease, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced on its website.

Holland, who died in Salt Lake City, led a governing body called the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, which helps set church policy while overseeing the many business interests of what is known widely as the Mormon church.

He was the next longest-tenured member of the Quorum of the Twelve after PresidentDallin H. Oaks, making him next in line to lead the church under a long-established succession plan.

Henry B. Eyring, who is 92 and one of Oaks' two top counselors, is now next in line for the presidency.

Holland had been hospitalized during the Christmas holiday for treatment related to ongoing health complications, the church said. Experts on the faith pointed to his declining health in October when Oaks did not select Holland as a counselor. He attended several church events that month in a wheelchair.

His death leaves a vacancy in the Quorum of the Twelve that Oaks will fill in coming months, likely by calling a new apostle from a lower-tier leadership council. Apostles are all men in accordance with the church's all-male priesthood.

Holland grew up in St. George, Utah, and worked for many years in education administration before his call to join the ranks of church leadership. He served as the ninth president of Brigham Young University, the Utah-based faith's flagship school, from 1980 to 1989 and was a commissioner of the church's global education system.

Under his leadership, the Provo university worked to improve interfaith relations and established a satellite campus in Jerusalem. The Anti-Defamation League later honored Holland with its Torch of Liberty Award for helping foster greater understanding between Christian and Jewish communities.

Holland is widely remembered for a 2021 speech in which he called on church members to take up metaphorical muskets in defense of the faith's teachings against same-sex marriage. The talk, known colloquially as "the musket fire speech," became required reading for BYU freshmen in 2024, raising concern among LGBTQ+ students and advocates.

Holland was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Terry Holland. He is survived by their three children, 13 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

This story has been corrected to show that Holland was preceded in death by his wife.

Man City makes it six Premier League wins in a row with 2-1 victory against Nottingham Forest

MANCHESTER, England (AP) — Rayan Cherki kept Manchester City'sPremier Leaguetitle challenge powering on with a late winner at Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

The France forward's 83rd minute strike secured a 2-1 victory at the City Ground to make it six league wins in a row for Pep Guardiola's team.

City is on an eight-game winning run in all and provisionally moved to the top of the standings — one point ahead of Arsenal, which was playing Brighton later on Saturday.

"Today is a big win," Cherki told TNT Sports. "I'm proud of the team because this game is very complicated to win."

It was Cherki's second goal in three games and fifth over all. He also provided an assist with an intricate pass to Tijjani Reijnders to put City ahead three minutes into the second half.

Omari Hutchinson equalized for relegation-fighting Forest, which was holding out for a crucial point until Cherki fired through a crowded box for the winner.

Guardiola looks like a man who believes his team is ready to regain the title it surrendered to Liverpool last season. He joined in the celebrations with the traveling fans after the final whistle — acting conductor as they celebrated wildly after another win.

Giannis Antetokounmpo expected to return to Bucks' lineup Saturday night against Bulls

The Milwaukee Bucks could get a big boost to their lineup Saturday night with the anticipated return of Giannis Antetokounmpo, according to The Athletic's Eric Nehm.

Antetokounmpo has been out sinceDec. 3 with a right calf strainand as long as pregame testing by the team's athletic training staff goes well, he will play against the Chicago Bulls at United Center.

Antetokounmpo dropped to the floor with a non-contact injury during the opening quarter of the Bucks'Dec. 3 win over the Detroit Pistons. After limping to the locker room, he was eventuallyruled out due to a soleus strain, the same injury that caused his 2023-24 season to come to a premature end.

The Bucks have gone 2-6 in Antetokounmpo's absence and are 10-19 overall on the season. That puts them 11th in the Eastern Conference, chasing the Bulls and Atlanta Hawks for a play-in spot, and five games behind the Orlando Magic for the eighth seed.

Through 17 games, the 30-year-old Antetokounmpo is averaging 28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists.

Antetokounmpo's injury, coupled with his contract status, has also caused the rumor mill to heat up while he's been out. After inkinga three-year extensionwith Milwaukee in 2023, he still has a year and a half remaining on his current deal before he can opt out.

After a report came out that the former MVP was talking to the team about his future with the franchise,Antetokounmpo denied any role in the talksand indicated his agent was handling them without his input.

While therewould be a large market interestedin acquiring his services, Antetokounmpo has been focused on his health and pushing the Bucks back into winning ways.

"I'm still locked in, locked in on my teammates. Most importantly, locked in on me getting back healthy,"Antetokounmpo said on Dec. 18. "And then, locked in on my teammates and how can I help them from the sideline or encourage them to be able to play and play free?

"Because at the end of the day, it takes a toll on them, too, right? They're playing game after game after game. Thank God we've had a very good schedule in the last couple of weeks, but it takes a toll on them, too — rumors, injuries, lose, win. It's hard, right? As a leader, but most importantly as a winner, you just gotta be there for them first."

"He has basically come back from the dead," Chase's daughterCaley Chasesays, when explaining why her father "doesn't remember certain things," inI'm Chevy Chase and You're Not, which debuts on CNN on Jan. 1.

While news of Chevy's hospitalization did come out at the time, the degree of its severity was not known. In the film, Caley and Chevy's wife, Jayni Chase, share more surprising details about the actor's health scare.

"He had heart failure," Caley continues.

In a separate interview, Jayni explains that her husband felt "something was wrong, but he couldn't explain what was wrong." During a visit to the ER, theCaddyshackstar's heart stopped.

Jayni continues, "During those years he was drinking, he got cardiomyopathy." She explains that with weakened heart muscles, the heart can't pump as much blood with each beat.

Chevy's longtime pal Peter Aaron says the decision was made to put him into a coma, which lasted eight days. "That's pretty rough on the body," Aaron adds.

Caley says, "The doctor had warned us we might not get him back: 'We don't know how present he'll be. Prepare yourselves for the worst.' He woke up, all he could do was use his voice."

She imitates the unusual sounds he made, which she describes as a "new birth." Later, when a nurse came in to "switch some stuff up" and said she had to "put this in here," Chevy joked, "That's what she said," to the relief and amazement of his daughter.

The documentary chronicles the life and career of the contentious comedian and three-time Emmy winner from his musician days (including an early association withSteely Dan), his time atSaturday Night Live, his successful films likeSeems Like Old TimesandFletch, to a revival of sorts on the seriesCommunity. The film also boasts new interviews withGoldie Hawn,Martin Short,Garrett Morris, and many others.

As a result of the incident, Chase suffers from memory gaps, which becomes something of a hurdle in the film when director Marina Zenovich probes Chase on his reputation for being difficult, particular incidents withSNLperformer Terry Sweeney, and the conclusion of his work onCommunity.

Elsewhere in the film, Chase says it wasa mistakefor him to leaveSaturday Night Livemidway through its second season and pursue a film career. He also says hewas hurtthat he was excluded from the bigSNL50celebration in early 2025.
