Philadelphia 76ers big man Joel Embiid was fined $50,000 by the NBA on Sunday for his actions during an Oct. 31 loss to the Boston Celtics. Embiid was fined for "making a lewd gesture on the playing court," per a league statement.
The gesture occurred with 7:08 left in the first quarter. After being fouled during a shot, Embiid appeared to do a crotch chop after the ball fell through the net.

Embiid was not penalized for the gesture during the game, likely because the officials didn't see it. The closest official walked past Embiid and was looking at the scorer's table when Embiid made the gesture. Embiid made his free throw after the foul, completing the three-point play.
Embiid dropped 20 points in the contest, a 109-108 loss for the 76ers. It marked the third-straight outing in which Embiid has scored at least 20 points.
After an injury-riddled 2024-25 NBA season, Embiid has already looked more explosive in four games this year. The team is playing it cautious with Embiid's surgically-repaired knee, and will give the star center regular rest early on. Embiid missed the team's Oct. 27 win over the Orlando Magic due to rest. He'll miss the team's game against the Brooklyn Nets on Sunday for the same reason.
Assuming Embiid doesn't need to miss additional time, the 76ers should have him back when they take on the Chicago Bulls on Nov. 4.
