Five reasons for MLB's agonizingly slow winter: When will free agents sign?

Groundhog Day may still be a month away, but in baseball free agency, groundhog day has been going on for the past 64 days.

Virtually every day is the same.

Rumors are floated. Teams check in. Teams check out.

And most of the top free agents still remain unsigned.

Spring training starts in less than seven weeks, and the likes of Kyle Tucker, Alex Bregman and Framber Valdez still remain unemployed.

It's a market that gobbled up all of the top relievers in a hurry, with every available free agent closer, fromEdwin Diaz(Los Angeles Dodgers) toDevin Williams(New York Mets) toRobert Suarez(Atlanta), signing in the first five weeks. The biggest sluggers signed and got their big paydays withPete Alonsogetting $155 million from theBaltimore OriolesandKyle Schwarberreturning to thePhiladelphia Philliesfor $150 million.

Alex Bregman is a free agent again after spending 2025 with the Boston Red Sox.

But top free-agent starters outsideDylan Cease($210 million) haven't signed yet and there's countless others looking for jobs, or at least contract offers to their satisfaction.

So, what in the world is taking so long in this slow-drip of a free agency?

No one is blaming the upcoming labor negotiations with a potential lockout in December, and no one hints at collusion.

So what is it?

"The key word is methodical," one agent said. "I just don't see any urgency."

USA TODAY Sports canvased a handful of executives and agents who came up with the top five reasons for the slow free-agent pace:

1.Big-market teams – besides Blue Jays – yet to swim deep in free agency

The Blue Jays have spent $337 million this winter in free agency, signing four of the 15 free agents who have received contract of at least $30 million. Even after signing infielderKazuma Okamototo a four-year, $60 million contract, with a formal press conference scheduled Tuesday, they still want to add another power hitter. Their preference is to make Okamoto a super utility player.

The Blue Jays remain fully engaged in talks with infielders Bo Bichette and Alex Bregman, with outfielder Kyle Tucker also remaining a possibility.

While the Blue Jays are trying to be the Dodgers of the North, their competitors in the AL East – except the Orioles – are standing back in awe.

The New York Yankees have spent $29 million. TheBoston Red Sox, who remain the favorite for Bregman, have been active on the trade market, but haven't spent a penny in free agency.

There are 21 teams who still have spent less than $60 million this winter, including big-market teams like theChicago Cubs, Red Sox, Yankees,San Francisco Giants,Texas Rangersand Los Angeles Angels.

"Major markets are waiting for another market in the same market," another agent said. "When you do that, you lose."

Since 2000, future Hall of Famer Albert Pujols' 101.3 Wins Above Replacement (WAR) leads all players, with Alex Rodriguez tied for second ways back at 89.7 WAR. See the rest of the top 25. 2. 2. Teams exploring trades beforespending big on free agents

TheMiami Marlinsare listening to trade offers for starter Edward Cabrera, with the Yankees, Mets, Cubs and Orioles all still showing interest.

The Milwaukee Brewers still are listening on offers for ace Freddy Peralta.

TheArizona Diamondbackshave been aggressively shopping but now are pessimistic about trading All-Star second baseman Ketel Marte. No one has come close to meeting their price.

And if Marte is still aboard, Bregman is definitely out of the D-backs' plans.

The St. Louis Cardinals are aggressively shopping infielder/outfielder Brendan Donovan and third baseman Nolan Arenado. And the Washington Nationals have been shopping starter MacKenzie Gore and shortstop CJ Abrams.

Teams like the Red Sox have chosen to hit the trade market instead of pushing all of their chips into free agency, landing starters Sonny Gray and Johan Oviedo, as well as Willson Contreras.

As long as there's trade inventory, it slows down the free-agent market.

3.Bullpens took priority

"I've never seen anything like it,'' one veteran GM said. "Relief pitching was everyone's first priority, it seems like. The rest of the market came to a standstill.''

You name it, the top relievers all went, and got paid well.

The top nine relievers all were signed before the holidays, earning a combined $292 million:

  • Diaz: $69 million, three years, Dodgers

  • Williams: $51 million, three years, Mets

  • Suarez: $45 million, three years, Atlanta

  • Tyler Rogers: $37 million, three years, Blue Jays

  • Ryan Helsley, $28 million, 2 years, Orioles

  • Emilio Pagan, $20 million, 2 years, Reds

  • Kyle Finnegan, $19 million, 2 years, Tigers

  • Pete Fairbanks, $13 million, 1 year, Marlins

  • Kenley Jansen, $10 million, 1 year, Tigers

4.Five-tool guys are way away from a deal

Schwarber received a five-year, $150 million from Phillies, but he was in such demand, that even the Pittsburgh Pirates and Cincinnati Reds were in serious pursuit, with the Reds even willing to offer more until Schwarber told them it wasn't necessary.

Meanwhile, Tucker, Cody Bellinger, Bregman and Bichette all remain unsigned, with no indication that any of them are close to a deal.

"It's been such an abnormality than years' past," one executive said.

While the Red Sox are the favorites to bring back Bregman, and the Yankees' No. 1 priority is the return of Bellinger, the Mets are still looming in the Bellinger derby while the Cubs remain in pursuit of Bregman for the second consecutive winter.

The Tucker market is the biggest mystery. He was projected to earn a contract in the $400 million neighborhood but could have to instead take a higher AAV on a short-term contract and hit the market again after two consecutive injury-plagued second halves.

"The major markets," one agent said, "are still power dry."

5. This may be the new normal

Really, the advent of free agency should be in January, and not in November for the stars of the game.

Everyone always waits for free agents' price tags to plummet, or at least for the years to drop, and nothing ever seems to get done until close to spring training training, or even in March.

Bryce Harper and Manny Machado were the two biggest stars in the winter of 2019, and had to wait until after spring training before they got the deals they desired, with Harper signing a 13-year, $330 million deal with the Phillies and Machado a 10-year, $300 million contract with the Padres.

Bregman didn't sign his three-year, $120 million contract with the Red Sox until spring training last year, in which he opted out, and now waits for a five- or six-year contract.

Players have learned to be patient, knowing at some point some team will blink.

"In my opinion, executives really struggle as far as decision-making now," one agent said. "They just collect so much more information, and then figure out how to utilize it."

So now that the holidays are over, and everyone is back to work, will the free-agent floodgates now open?

Not so fast.

This is salary arbitration week with teams and players exchanging salary arbitration numbers on Thursday, which will consume most of their time.

Maybe next week.

Aaron Rodgers proves to be game-changer Steelers needed him to be

So, this is why they broughtAaron Rodgersto Pittsburgh.

Prayers. Karma. Magic.

Rodgers did everything he could with his 42-year-old body and soul to lift the Steelers to victory in the winner-take-all showdown on Sunday night. He threw 47 passes for a season-high 294 yards. He went tit for tat against Lamar Jackson during a classic fourth quarter. On Pittsburgh's last two-minute drive, Rodgers was brilliant, capping it with a 26-yard touchdown strike to Calvin Austin III.

Then Rodgers could do nothing except watch.

The game was won – and lost – when Ravens rookieTyler Loop's 44-yard field goal try sailed wide rightat Acrisure Stadium as time expired.

Just like that, on the last play of the NFL's 18-week regular season, the would-be end of the season for Rodgers has morphed into his first trip to the NFL playoffs in four years.

Steelers 26, Ravens 24.

Hold off the questions of whether the living legend will retire or come back next year.

Yes, miracles happen.

"Chaos. Disbelief. Gratitude," Rodgers said during his postgame news conference when someone asked what he felt as Loop missed what was seemingly a made-to-order kick with the AFC North title at stake. "A lot of emotions."

<p style=Week 1: Detroit Lions wide receiver Isaac TeSlaa (18) makes a catch for a touchdown against the Green Bay Packers during the fourth quarter at Lambeau Field. The Raiders won the game, 20-13. Week 1: New York Giants quarterback Russell Wilson (3) fumbles the ball on a tackle by Washington Commanders safety Will Harris (3) during the first quarter at Northwest Stadium. It was a rough Giants debut for Wilson (17 of 37 passing for 168 yards) as the Commanders won the game, 21-6. Week 1: Fireworks go off before the NFL Kickoff Game between the Philadelphia Eagles and Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field. The defending Super Bowl champion Eagles opened the season with a 24-20 victory over their longtime NFC East rivals.

It should be mentioned that Loop's kick came in the same end zone wherea Catholic priest sprinkled Holy Water on the turf before the game.

See, in a place where one of the franchise's most iconic moments is known as "The Immaculate Reception," Rodgers apparently got a lot of favor.

"I'm not going to ask any questions," said Cam Heyward, the veteran defensive tackle and Steelers elder statesman. "The good Lord made a good decision, tonight."

The Steelers, who were home underdogs on Sunday, may need some more divine intervention, if you will, inthe AFC playoffs. They'llopen at home in the wild-card roundnext Monday night againstthe Houston Texans, who just happen to have the NFL's longest winning streak, rolling with nine consecutive victories.

At least they'll have Rodgers, with a chance to write a storybook script with a franchise that, for all its glory and tradition, hasn't won a playoff game since 2016.

He mentioned, with a chuckle, that the Steelers would probably be considered a home underdog against the Texans. But it was no joke. Pittsburgh (10-7) barely got into the playoffs, having nearly blown what was once a seemingly insurmountable division lead a few weeks ago. And Sunday's showing, which included Jackson blistering the Steelers for two long touchdown passes to Zay Flowers in that furious fourth quarter, exemplified the hit-or-miss nature of this season.

Then again, it's a resilient bunch.

"We had to get off the mat today," Heyward said. "We shot ourselves in the foot a couple different times. We did not play a perfect game by any means, but in different moments, the offense, defense, special teams, stepped up."

Hearing Heyward assess the effort brings to mind a couple other times he addressed the state and mission of his team. In October, after a loss against the Green Bay Packers, hesounded an alarm about urgencyand maintained that his unit needed to do a better job of responding to adversity with quick adjustments – and fight – while in the midst of the game.

That happened on Sunday night.

During training camp, Heyward told me what needed to happen for the Steelers to avoid another late-season collapse. Remember, last season they were 10-3 before fading down the stretch and getting bounced from the playoffs by the Ravens. Besides health and freshness, he saw the ability to play complementary football as crucial. It didn't need to be a case of one particular unit carrying the team.

"So, you look for that balance," Heyward said in July.

That, too, happened at various points on Sunday night.

Still, the addition of Rodgers – lured with a lengthy courtship by coach Mike Tomlin during the spring – came with the idea that putting the four-time NFL MVP in the mix could be the game-changer that hasn't existed for the Steelers since Ben Roethlisberger retired.

No, as the final miss illustrated, it wasn't all on Rodgers. Yet when they needed his veteran poise, savvy and sharp-shooting throws in crunch time, school was out, so to speak. Pittsburgh started its final offensive drive with 2:20 on the clock.

"I've admired him from afar for a long time," Tomlin said. "It's good to do it with him.

"This was the vision in the spring when we pursued him. That's why you do business with a 41, 42-year-old guy. A been-there, done-that guy with a resume like his, he's not only capable, man. He thrives in it."

Rodgers would totally agree. He said that getting the ball with 2:20 left and needing a touchdown was exactly the scenario he wanted. He also thought part of his purpose on Sunday night was rather mystical, too, describing his desire to be a "magnetic force" to help his teammates stay confident and calm.

That mindset sure worked out when things got chaotic near the goal line as Rodgers stayed cool after he was unable to receive the radio communication from coordinator Arthur Smith in his helmet. Then, the radio in his replacement helmet didn't work, either.

"That's part of it, being the old guy, having a lot of gray in your beard," he said. "They expect things from you. It's nice to be able to deliver."

Sure enough, as Rodgers took over for his final drive, T.J. Watt stood on the sideline and expressed his confidence that they were in good hands. Watt called it "a weird, no-panic feeling."

He added: "You see the ball in the hands of (No.) 8 there and it's like, 'He's here for a reason. And this is why he's here. This is the best dude in the NFL for this moment.' To be able to see him deliver on a big stage like that was incredible to see."

It's striking that neither Rodgers nor Tomlin has made it back to a Super Bowl in 15 years, since the quarterback led Green Bay to a triumph against Pittsburgh in Super Bowl 45. Now they are joined at the hip in chasing such a possibility again – with the help of a zany ending.

"It just takes a little belief at this point in the season," Rodgers said.

He knows. If a team gets hot at the right time, it could lead to a special ending. First, it's a matter of just getting into the playoffs. On several occasions since he arrived in Pittsburgh, Rodgers has talked about wanting the Steelers to position themselves among the typical handful of teams that will have a legitimate shot to win a championship.

Now they're one of the 14 teams in the dance.

It was fitting that Rodgers wistfully reflected on squeaking out a 10-3 win against the Bears in the 2010 regular-season finale that allowed the Packers to make the playoffs as a sixth seed. It set up a remarkable playoff run as Green Bay became just the second sixth seed to win a Super Bowl.

"It gave us a little belief," Rodgers recalled of that win against the Bears.

Then he used the word again in considering the latest triumph.

"I think it's going to give us some belief," he said.

Belief. Faith. Intervention. Just pass the Holy Water.

NEED TO KNOW

  • A major review into security for Prince Harry is likely to grant him the armed security he's been campaigning for, according to a new report

  • The Duke of Sussex lost an appeal over the issue in the U.K.'s High Court in May 2025 — but a review has been underway since

  • Harry, 41, has said that he can't bring his family to the country of his birth because of the lack of security for them

Prince Harry's bid to have his official, armed full-time security reinstated when he visits the U.K. appears to have taken a step forward.

Insiders tell PEOPLE there are "positive" noises coming from the government regarding a reversal ofthe decisionnot to grant Harry security, and they are cautiously hopeful that the decision to upgrade his cover will go ahead.

It follows a report that an official review has found that Harry, 41, meets the criteria for inclusion in the taxpayer-funded security cover.

After several years of the Duke of Sussex's campaigning — including a high-profile court battle which he lost — a full-scale reviewwas granted in December.

That meant an official risk assessment was carried out by the body that draws up the roster for who gets security – the royal and VIP executive committee (Ravec.) Ravec is made up of members of the government's Home Office, the Metropolitan Police and the royal household.

On Jan. 4,The Mail on Sundayreported that the committee had found that the criteria for the top-level security measures had been met. A source close to Harry was quoted as saying,  "It's now a formality. Sources at the Home Office have indicated that security is nailed on for Harry."

There is now a belief that, barring a last-minute intervention from opponents, the duke will be granted the armed guards and institutional backup he used to get when he was a working royal.

Harry has repeatedly said that without such security cover, he is unable to bring his wife,Meghan Markle, 44, and their two children,Prince Archie, 6, andPrincess Lilibet, 4, to the country of his birth —insisting he doesn't feel safedoing so.

This reversal could pave the way for Harry to bring his children, who are being raised in California, to the U.K. to be reunited with his father,King Charles.

It emerged on Oct. 6 thata female stalkercame within feet of Prince Harry on a couple of occasions when he was on a charity visit to the U.K. in September 2025.

Harry lost his full security cover when he and Meghanstepped back from frontline royal dutiesin 2020. In May 2025, helost an appealover the issue. It emerged during that case that he and Meghan, 44, and the family had not had an assessment since 2019.

But in October 2025, Harry made another approach, making a personal appeal to the British government minister in charge of policing and crime prevention in Britain, the Home SecretaryShabana Mahmood.

In an interview in May, following the failure of his appeal, Harryimplied to the BBCthat he believed his father,King Charles, could influence the decision despite the fact that the palace hasconsistently deniedthat the King, 77, has the power to have that security reinstated.

Then, in December, the full-scale review of the Duke of Sussex's security by the official body that assesses how royals and VIPs are guarded commenced.

Harry is due back in the U.K. later this month for a court case over his legal claim against Associated Newspapers, the owners of the publishers of theDaily MailandMail on Sundayand Mail Online.

His spokesman declined to comment, saying they don't discuss security matters.

A government spokesperson added in a statement, "The UK Government's protective security system is rigorous and proportionate. It is our long-standing policy not to provide detailed information on those arrangements, as doing so could compromise their integrity and affect individuals' security."

Kathy Griffin, 65, 'fell in love' with a 23-year-old. We need to talk about age gaps.

Kathy Griffinclosed out 2025 with adatingrevelation: Shortly after her split from ex-husbandRandy Bick, she fell for a 23-year-old.

"I accidentally fell in love with a 23-year-old," the 65-year-old comedian wrote in a piece forThe Cut, published Dec. 31. "Because of his age, he didn't have the usual sexism, misogyny, and biases that guys my age tend to have. He seemed to see me. I know that sounds really corny. Oh God, it sounds so lame! But I felt really comfortable with him, and I felt very content just hanging out."

Therelationshipwas short-lived, Griffin wrote, but she says the two enjoyed each other's company and she doesn't regret it.

"I knew he was too young when he told me he never wanted to have kids and that he could be with me forever. And I was like, 'You don't know that. You're 23. You have no idea,' " she wrote. "So I had to set that dove free."

Kathy Griffin closed out 2025 with a dating revelation: After her split from Randy Bick, she fell for a 23-year-old.

Griffin is far from the only celebrity to pursue romance with someone with significantly younger than her. After all,Bill Belichickand his girlfriendJordon Hudson− who have a 48-year age gap −made their romance red carpet official in late 2024. AndKatherine McPheeandDavid Foster, whohave a 35-year age gap, have been married since 2019.

Though age-gap relationships aren't necessarily uncommon, they do come with complications that the people in them should be aware of. Often, the biggest challenge isn't the relationship itself, but how other people respond to it.

"You have to be confident in yourrelationship,"Janet Morrison,a certified sex and relationship coach, previously told USA TODAY. "The biggest external factor that influences most of these relationships is not the age but the response and acceptance of the relationship by peers."

Kathy Griffin and society's age-gap obsession

Hollywood has a storied history of famous couples with notable age gaps, such asLauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart(25-year gap) orMarilyn Monroeand Joe Dimaggio (12-year gap). In the modern Hollywood era,Kylie Jenner and Tyga(who met when Jenner was 14 and Tyga was 21) andFlorence Pugh and Zach Braff(a 21-year gap) have raised eyebrows, as have several ofScott Disick's relationships.

Some have called out their former, older partners after feeling taken advantage of. TakeDemi Lovato's 2022 single "29,"which was adopted by myriadTikTok users calling out their own past relationships. "Finally 29 / Funny, just like you were at the time / Thought it was a teenage dream, just a fantasy / But was it yours or was it mine? 17, 29,"Lovato sings in the song, rumored to be about exWilmer Valderrama.

WhenTaylor Swift, 36, rereleased her2012 album "Red"in 2021, she updated herbreakup ballad "All Too Well,"allegedly about actorJake Gyllenhaal(who is nine years her senior), to include callouts to an age difference.

Media tend to portrayage-gapromancesin a one-dimensional manner: The older man, wealthy and stable, has the power – socially, financially and even sexually – while his attractive, young, dependent "trophy wife" offers one thing: beauty. Public discourse around age-gap relationships can also be brutal when an older woman dates a younger man, as evidenced by the label "cougar," which paints older women as wild animals on the prowl.

Griffin commented on the double standard older women in age-gap relationships face, saying she finds no shame in people calling her a "cougar." In fact, she embraces it.

"I haven't been with a guy my age since I was in my 30s," Griffin wrote. "So I'm constantly called a cougar, but I don't mind. I kind of am a cougar, which to me just means you have the freedom to choose the person that you want as opposed to the age bracket that society tells you is the only option for you."

What relationship experts say about age gaps

Ultimately, for any couple with an age gap to have a successful romance, it's crucial both people in the relationship see each other as equals.

Where age-gap relationships most commonly go wrong is when they veer into toxic power imbalances. In order to avoid this,Meghan Gillen, a professor of psychology at Penn State Abington who studies developmental psychology and body image, previously told USA TODAY she recommends individuals in age-gap relationships stay mindful and evaluate the situation for themselves. Ask yourself: "Does it feel appropriate? Does it feel comfortable? Do you feel like you can relate to the person … or do you feel like the person has power over you?" Younger partners in particular need to stay especially vigilant of potential gender, social and power dynamics.

More:Kristin Cavallari, Mark Estes and the sexist relationship age gap discourse

Ian Kerner, a therapist and sex and relationship specialist, previously told USA TODAY it can also be hard for couples with large age gaps to integrate family and friends into each other's lives, too, as well as finding common interests and activities. To combat this, Kerner says, it's essential that both people find things they enjoy doing together.

And remember: There are plenty of examples of healthy, thriving relationships with significant age gaps.

"Humans find connection in all sorts of places,"Erik Anderson, a licensed marriage and family therapist, previously told USA TODAY. "As long as both parties are able to consent, we shouldn't be so critical of relationships."

The first full moon of the year took place on Saturday, Jan. 3, and is known as the Wolf Moon, according to the Farmer's Almanac.

The moon was a supermoon, which typically look about 30% brighter and up to 14% larger. Stargazers won't have another opportunity to see a supermoon until the end of the year. There will be one in November and another in December.

Photographers captured the moon in photos from around the world. Here's a look in case you miss the moon over the weekend.
