Major update in conviction of death row inmate backed by Oprah Winfrey
A death row inmate who has been backed by Oprah Winfrey has had his latest claims of innocence thrown out in federal court. Jarvis Jay Masters, 62, has spent more than 30 years in prison in California for a murder he claims he did not commit. He was sentenced to death for his role in the 1985 killing of San Quentin State Prison correctional Sgt. Hal Burchfield. Masters, who was serving a 23-year sentence for armed robbery, was accused of providing the murder weapon used by another inmate to carry out the stabbing.
