FDA Issues Highest Warning Level for Cheese Recall

Pecorino Romano cheese products are being recalled because of the potential presence of listeria.

On Monday, Nov. 24, one ofBoar's Head Brand'ssuppliers, Ambriola Company, issued a recall of select pecorino Romano cheese products due to possible listeria contamination.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) published the recall on the same day and classified the issue as a Class 1 recall, which is defined as  "a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death," per theorganization. The FDA uses classifications — Class I, II or II — to indicate the "degree of health hazard" of the recalled product.

6-oz. packages of Boar's Head Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese (UPC 0-42421-05858) and 7-oz. wedges of Boar's Head Pecorino Romano Cheese (UPC 0-42421-15160) are included in the recall. The former has "best by" date between Nov. 21, 2025, and March 12, 2026, and the latter has "best by" dates between Nov. 25, 2025, and May 11, 2026.

Along with the Boar's Head products, Locatelli, which also uses Ambriola Company as its pecorino Romano supplier, has recalled its Pecorino Romano Grated Cheese. The Locatelli Pecorino Romano Grated Cheese (UPC 41793-82493) with all "sell by" dates are included in the recall.

Boar's Head EverRoast Chicken Caesar Salad (UPC 850042244142) and EverRoast Chicken Caesar Wrap (UPC 85004224455) — both with "best by" date between Nov. 9 and Nov. 22 — are part of the recall as they use the recalled grated cheese.

The two grated cheese products were found to have the potential presence of listeria monocytogenes but, despite the wedges not being directly impacted, Boar's Head decided to withdraw all Ambriola Company-produced items "in an abundance of caution," per therecall announcement. Affected products were sold nationwide at grocers including Big Y and Tops.

No illnesses in connection to these products have been reported, according toBig Y's recall announcement.

Listeriosis, the condition caused by listeria infection, causes headaches, fever, muscle aches, confusion and diarrhea among other symptoms, according to the USDA. The agency also highlighted that people over 65, those who are pregnant and immunocompromised people are especially at risk from listeriosis, which can result in a fatal infection.
