A three-storey wooden structure known as the Wenchang Pavilion in China's Jiangsu province has been reduced to ashes following a fire on November 12, 2025. Dramatic footage showed thick black smoke billowing into the sky as sections of the collapsing roof tumbled to the ground.

The Wenchang Pavilion was commissioned in 2008 and completed in October 2009, constructed with a reinforced concrete frame. The pavilion falls under the management of the neighboring Yongqing Temple, areligious institutionwith documented origins tracing back many centuries.

The original Yongqing Temple was founded during the Liang Dynasty (around 536 AD), though the current temple buildings were reconstructed in the 1990s. Officials confirmed that the pavilion contained no ancient architectural remains or historically valuable artifacts at the time of the fire. Local authorities have made it clear that further action will be taken as the investigation progresses, and legal consequences may follow for those responsible.

In response to the incident, local authorities have announced plans to implement additional safety measures at religious and cultural sites throughout the region. Officials have confirmed that restoration work will commence once structural assessments and the official investigation are complete. The rebuilding efforts will adhere to the traditional architectural style that characterized the original pavilion, preserving the cultural and historical integrity of the site.
